Title: COMPLETED WITH THANKS KEEFFE to NZ in 1865 and where did they go to!
Post by: majm on Thursday 13 November 08 05:47 GMT (UK)
Hi there,

From the passenger list for The Armstrong, arriving Auckland Feb 1865, I have found where John Keeffe, and his wife Ellen, together with their children, Patrick, John, Julia, Michael and Ellen arrived in NZ.  I descend from the lad, John, born in Dublin Ireland c1858.  John came to NSW when 18, where he then married in 1878.  I am interested in finding out more about his siblings, and perhaps the following info will assist:

John Keeffe (the head of this family) had a military background, perhaps 55th regiment, but not sure.  Ellen Keeffe (his wife) was probably born Ellen Donoghue (as per her son’s NSW marriage and death certs).  Ellen died in Auckland March 1876, and it was her son John who made the arrangements, so I do not know where her husband or her eldest son was. (This is from my oral history).  I do not know if her widower husband re-married, but he may have – perhaps Bridget may be name of his second partner.

I think Patrick married a lass with surname Storey.  I think either Patrick died or there may have been a divorce, however I think Mrs Patrick Storey (Emily?) remarried, to a Robert Mitchell McLean.

On the Auckland Cenotaph website is a K I A in France WW1, with his photo from newspaper perhaps.  That image is spit of my first cousin.  The lad was Albert Keeffe, and his next of kin was Mrs R McLean.   I am seeking confirmation about his parents.

I think Julia Keeffe married a chap with surname Vazey or Vasey, and that either she, or her children kept in very regular contact with my NSW forebears, at least until perhaps the 1940’s.

I am sure that Michael Keeffe lived to a very old age, (this is from my oral history), and was “on the land”.

My late Gran (1887-1962) spent much of her youth in Auckland, as both her parents died in the late 1890’s in Sydney and she was sent to her NZ family, where she was “finished” and did some nursing training.

So, I am seeking clues to advance my searching for information about this family.

I am in NSW Australia, and I thank you for taking the time to read this posting.

Cheers, from across the ditch, I enjoy that reference to the Tasman Sea, for I have not yet found the passenger lists to show how my great grandfather got from Auckland to Sydney, and often wonder it he perhaps had to hitch a ride across somehow!  On other lines on my tree I have other NZ forebears, and they too may have found alternative ways to cross that ditch for the passenger lists between NZ and AUS  have been diligently searched and none of my forebears details found as yet.

Hi Del,

I am not sure, but the following address is in my memory banks from over 45 years ago, when I was a wee lass !

10 Union St Auckland.  I think this would have belonged to the period say 1870 to at least 1910. I have always associated it with the Keeffe family, but tis only my memory, not based on any documentation at all!

On the other hand, this family were associated with my Fencible lot too, so perhaps that address is to do with them.  The Fencible surnames were: ALLEN, CRUISE, PILCHER and variations on that spelling.  Bootmaker was the most usual occupation mentioned, but that too is oral history.

Cheers, and many thanks for these clues.  I appreciate your efforts.

Del,

I had not noticed that!  John and James were also used by my Gran's brother who settled in California after at life as a steward on liners doing the San Fran, Hawaii, Islands, NZ and East Coast of Aust runs with mail and passengers from say 1901 to post WW2.

My first cousin and I have loads of oral history, and every time we start to track any item down that our Gran shared with us, we discover she was very truthful, and had good memory, and left us lots of clues to follow.  Its the joining of the dots, and getting the reference numbers to obtain certificates and the like that is our goal!

You are a great help, and I am sure my cousin (not a PC owner) will be delighted when I snail mail him the info to date!

I thank you from us both!

Hi ggd

Michael died 1 6 1953, Mary died 3 11 1946, and there is a James in the plot next to there's that died 24 7 1937. http://rid.fndc.govt.nz/searchform.php have a look on here. Kaeo is close to the top of the North Island.

Probate for Michael http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/CallSimpleSearch.do have  look on here. If you enter the Keeffe there are only 9 entries. Robert Mitchel Mclean is on here also.

From the NZSG Index

Michael married Mary Goulton in 1902, folio 3382.
Patrick married Ethel Emily Storey in 1889, folio 1968
Julia married Edward Vasey in 1876, folio 1669
Ethel Emily Keeffe married Robert Mitchel Mclean in 1912, folio 1908
Ellen Emily Keeffe married Edmund Couniham in 1911, folio 4340

There are two entries for a John Keeffe a marriage to a Rose Clancy in 1869, folio 1496 ad another marriage entry in 1921 to Elvina Elizabeth Esler. Maybe related?

Thers a probate for an Ellen Counihan , Place: Waikouaiti, Occupation: Widow, Court: Dunedin, Probate Number: 22880, Filed 19 June 1947, held at Dunedin Archives.

Update,

I have ordered various transcripts of bdm info listed in this thread.  I will keep thread open so that I can include the information on those transcripts when they arrive.  It can take 3 - 4 weeks for these to come as I am in NSW Australia.

I thank everyone who has helped me and I recommend anyone reading this thread - at any time in the days, months, years, decades ahead - to realise that the contributors to this thread have never met me, and yet willingly helped, without expecting any reward.  To me this is a PRICELESS contribution, volunteering their time -

I salute you all.

Cheers,

Hi all, me again,

Yes, I think Julia would be born about 1860.  The nz papers past lists the passengers and the children are not listed by their alpha first name, nor by gender, so I have presumed they are listed by their order of birth.  If that were the case, then these children of John and Ellen Keeffe were

Patrick, John, Julia, Michael and Ellen.

From the marriage and death of John (the one who was sibling, not his dad), John was born c1858, Dublin, Ireland.  So Julia was possibly born after him.

On the other hand, Michael Keeffe - the 95 year old who died June 1953 - if he was same as the lad who arrived on The Armstrong, Feb 1865, then he was born c1858 too, but listed after Julia in the newspaper cutting.

Re Julia Keeffe who married Vazey, and who died at age 38
I have much to ponder and think about.

My non PC cousin is delighted, and my phone bill will be a tad on the rich side!

Cheers All

I ordered several certificates perhaps a week or so ago, and these could take up to 4 weeks to arrive from NZ to Aust.  When I have these, I will post the information here, and then in the New Year, I will start a new thread, (and then close down this thread)

Cheers, everyone, and many thanks to for the information you have found and passed on to me.

Bridget Mary KEEFFE died 22 Feb 1906 aged 51 years also James KEEFFE died 10 August 1910 aged 57 years, plus an Alice Annie died 1st Feb 1918 aged 42. Another family by the look of it.

My name is Shane Vazey from New Zealand
I've just started researching my family history.
I will go through my stuff when I have a little more time and get back to you re: Vazey
My understanding is that there was only one family of Vazeys with that exact spelling who immigrated to NZ.
There are others like Vasey (lots in oz as well) and Vessey
I'm in Kalgoorlie, but I have first cousins in Eastern Australia.

Kind regards and happy hunting.

Hi Shane,

Julia Keeffe married Edward Vazey in 1876 in NZ.  I am fairly sure Edward was brother to George.  George Vazey married Emma in NZ in 1874.   Julia was my Gran's aunt.
I am in Australia.

Cheers, Just Moi.

EDIT TO ADD:

Have just checked the NZBDM online website, VAZEY is how they have those two marriages recorded.  Julia to Edward is 1876/1527; Emma Carder  to George is 1874/9124[/i]

Hi Majm,

I am descendent of Julia Keeffe and Edward Henry Vazey.
Vazeys: Edward Henry and George Frederick were the sons of Henry Vazey and Margaret Rand, all from West Ham, Essex.  Vazey is the spelling on the UK censuses and parish registers.  Henry died 1852 in Poplar, London; the boys were living with thier mother's brother Philip Rand in Plaistow at 1861 Census.  There is an 1861 census for Margaret Vazey as an inn visitor in Richmond.  Margaret became the wife of Mr George Andrews but I haven't found a marriage record.

Margaret and George Andrews emigrated to Auckland 1864 on the Ardbeg/Ardberg.  Edward and George followed in 1865 on the Aliquis.

Ellen Keeffe: (mother of Julia who married Edward Henry Vazey) - here is Ellen's death notice, 6 March 1876, at Union St, which ties in with what you remembered!  Also confirms John as serving in 55th Regiment:
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZH18760308.2.9&srpos=29&e=-------50-NZH-1-byDA-on--0keeffe

That would match to John Keeffe, labourer, Union St from the Electrol Roll.

I am currently collating info on Julia Keeffe and Edward Henry Vazey's descendants and am happy to share information.

I would love a copy of any certificates and any further information you have.  I'm especially interested in the info about the NSW-NZ relationships into the 1940s that you mentioned.  May I kindly request that you PM me.

Regards, Lawrence.

Hi,  I would love to receive any information anyone may have about Edward Henry Vazey and Julia Keeffe.  They were my great great grandparents.  My grandfather was Charles Edward Vazey (brother of Edward Henry Vazey who died in the Second World War on HMS Neptune), his parents were  George John Vazey (brother of Edward Henry Vazey who died in the First World War) and Annie Elizabeth Parsons.

Thanks very much -
Sarah

Sorry I should have added George John Vazey and Edward Henry Vazey (died WW1) were the sons of Julia Keeffe and Edward Henry Vazey (son of Margaret Rand and Henry Vazey).

Hi have just come across this very interesting completed with Thanks Keefe to NZ 1865. I am the great grand daughter of Ellen Keefe(I did not know her!) and through oral history and a little research know this is the correct line.  Ellen went on to marry (elope) Nathaniel Haynes in Auckland NZ and had a large family. She died in the 1930s.  I will when I get a bit more time put up some links to the Vazey family.  It is very interesting to come across this information as I dont know much about the Keefe family and where they were from in Ireland.
