ps.  the new pages cannot be accessed directly from some topic pages (i.e. from within some topics),
or from some of the board pages  :(

But they can always be accessed from the index page.

Thank you for your directions, which were successful.
What prompted this post was that I noticed I picked up another  "Star". Now I can tell Newlady that the long hours at the computer instead of helping her with the crossword in bed, have been worth while as I  have been raised to the rank of Rootschat Member.

Thanks for the work!  When I got on, this site seemed fairly easy to understand, but the help is great -- and I have used it a few times.  I also was happy to earn my stripes as a full member.  After the last posting, I also now appreciate why you have a requirement before people can PM each other -- and I thank you for that!

You're not doing anything wrong. The Report to Moderator is there to tell us about any problems (although you can't report your own posts) and if you click on the number you'll see the following message:
Your IP address is shown only to you and moderators. Remember that this information is not identifying, and that most IPs change periodically.
You cannot see other members' IP addresses, and they cannot see yours.

Please can I ask this here as I don't know where else to do so.
Why is the Profile page on a timer and it 'Times Out' and you lose all your text?
I was writing a new list of places and names in the box that appears below my posted messages. When I clicked the 'Change Profile' box the screen showed me a message saying the page had timed out. Why, for heavens' sake!?!
I am having to write it all by hand on a piece of paper and then type it in later. I am not best pleased, to put it mildly.!. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem.

Hi Bethgem

I wasn't aware of this particular issue before.  Sorry it has caused you problems.

A couple of suggestions: one is to use the Surname Interest Table (there's a link at the bottom of every page) then you don't need to put as many names in your profile.

The second is to type things out in either Notepad or Word or another editor and cut-and-paste it into the Rootschat form when you have it as you want.

Yes Arranroots, I will have to write it up somewhere and copy it to the box in the Edit Profile page.  Such a nuisance though, as I'd worked hard to get it right and it looked so good! Perhaps a 'save' feature ought to be available? Just a suggestion. Thanks for your reply,

Just one question. I may be having a senior moment but on the help pages it talks about an event calender but I cant find it on my headings :-\

The Event Calendar was turned off when we moved to the new server, as it was too "resource hungry". 

We hope to re-install it when Trystan has finished optimising performance.

Saving is OK if I don't take ages composing! That's what I did you see, I took too long and the thing closed down without me knowing and when I clicked to add everything I'd typed it was lost! Oh hum, never mind, back to the drawing board! Thanks for you help. I won't have time for a bit to do it. Cheers for now.  :)

As a new boy I still have much to learn - in fact I've already discovered a spelling error I have made in the name of one of the families I'm investigating. How do I correct this error ?
(The actual error was to spell "PATERSON" as 'Patterson')

I believe I have now successfully corrected the name  I had originally mis-spelled as " Patterson " to now read as " Paterson " - and I thank you for your assistance in my amending  my recently submitted profile details.

This is a VERY NEWLY revamped board.  There's a loooong post about 'your new RootsChat' and amongst all the posts it seems there is a slight problem with the Chatroom and it's in the process of being fixed.

So hopefully you'll be able to go there soon.

Not sure what you've done Teepee ???
When you go to whichever forum you are talking of, you have to click on whatever topic you want to reply to and open it up, then you'll find a reply button - one at the top and one at the bottom of the screen; on mine it's green with reply in white.

I think only the For Sale & Wanted ones don't have a reply button, but there may be others.
The 'ordinary' subjects are OK.

I am a bit confused about where to actually post messages. I have quite a lot of information on my family tree and can go back on 1 branch to 1509. I do  have some gaps which I am sure could be filled in if I can get the information I have onto an appropriate feed. But I am struggling as to what I need to access to share my information.

Why don't you start on the beginners board.  Your post can then be moved to another location by a moderator if that seems appropriate.

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

The best way for newcomers is to post a reply on the bottom of the topic you are interested in. You have already posted a reply here so the procedure is exactly the same.

The person who started the topic and those who have joined in should receive an email notification that you have posted there and hopefully come back soon.

Is LordKent the name of the subject or the name of the person who started the topic?

We have a search facility but I couldn't find those terms.

When you click reply it usually brings up a message box where you can write your reply and then click the button to post your reply.  Obviously a small hiccup if you didn't get one coming up.

Who were you trying to reply to ?

One way is to click on "profile" on the black banner near the top of the page.

This will bring up your profile, on the left hand side click on "show posts" this will show all the posts you have made, click on whichever you want.

Once you have made several pages of posts it's a bit tedious but by then you will have got the hang of the site  ;D

If you give your posts a good title (which you have) this also helps find your posts when you have a few... You can also use the search box at the top "Tom Jones" will find all post that talk about "Tom Jones" which you can narrow down further with advanced search ;)

Click on Profile then Show Posts and then Topics (will be a much shorter list than all the posts you've made)-

If you're trying to send a private message, then you won't be able to do that until you've made 3 (I think) posts - and posts on some boards, including this one, don't count.

Another option is to use the Report to moderator link at the bottom of any post in the thread. I don't know if that also requires you to have made 3 posts.

Having said that, RootsChat doesn't generally delete whole threads without good reason, so you would need to put your case to the moderator. If it's because the thread contains incorrect information, the best way is usually to post the correct information and explain why the previous posts were wrong - that can be a lot more helpful to future researchers than simply deleting the lot.

if you look at the bottom of the first page, you will see a red button that says "contact support" if you press on that you can send us an email directly.
