Dave THANK YOU SO MUCH for this ;D
By using those free credits I have been able to find the marriage of an ancestor & the birth of his daughter. It was a long shot (looking in Scotland) but paid off, I'm over the moon as I was able to identify his father & mother from the marriage details.
Once again, a very big thank you :-*

Thanks a lot!

Glad some of you are getting use from this.
Jane, your result is brilliant. Would you not have tried a Scottish search otherwise?
If not, it makes we wonder whether this thread should be moved to the Common Room. Perhaps it might give others the idea to expand their searches and perhaps come up trumps as you have.
I wonder just how many folk, not generally researching Scotland, are aware of SP.
I've renamed the thread, just in case not everyone recognises the abbreviation for ScotlandsPeople (SP) and also asked the Mods to move to Common Room if appropriate.

Dave, if I told you I had had this ancestors details since 1971 & had not been able to find his connection, I think you would be as excited as I am :D
He first surfaced in 1955 when I personally remember my grandfather saying he had seen an interview on the TV with a William Bravery a Chelsea Pensioner. Bravery was my grandfathers surname. This incident was recalled in my grandfathers diaries (I have copies) he obviously went to meet him & recalls that, 'cousin Bill' had lost his wife, 'cousin Nellie' & daughter in a rocket attack during WWII.
I had found Nellie's death recorded in CWGC but could not find a marriage for them. I got William's details from the Royal Hospital back in 1971 & found he had been in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Yesterday I went through the GRO indeces looking for the marriage without success so my thoughts turned to Scotland & I came on the Scottish page of Rootschat which is where I found your posting :D I had done a free search on SP & found 3 births & 3 marriages in the name of Bravery but didn't want to fork-out the 6 pounds as it was such a long shot & I would be left with unused credits....bingo, along came Dave ;) I found the birth of the daughter & their marriage two years after the birth & what's more, Nellie was William's first cousin! This might have been the reason why they went to Scotland ( a disapproving family)
Sorry for the long post but I'm so elated that I had to share my success which involved some very sneaky detective work on CWGC ;D

That's great Jane. :) Really nice wee find.

Once you've logged in and got to the bit of the screen where it says "Voucher code", it should just be a case of entering (or cutting and pasting) the code to the box and click on "Use voucher".
As soon as you do that, you should get your 10 credits plus a confirmation email.
Let me know if you still have problems.
Dave
Added, don't click purchase or choose a payment method. Just the code is required.
-
hooray! Thanks - it worked.
I'll do it from my works computer too ;D
Have spent a FORTUNE on there the past few years so don't feel TOO bad about it!!
-
Thanks for the pointer Dave! :) Good way to get people interested in using the site, or like me (and Val!) if you've spent a ridiculous amount on there a couple of freebies is rather nice - took a chance on a death cert and after viewing found it's the correct one, so well spent too :D
-
Hi Dave,
Thanks so much for this!! I spend a fortune on SP so free credits are very welcome ;D

Hi Dave
Thank you very much.
I put credits on findmypast.com, thinking they'd do for Scotland's People from what it said on their page, but they didn't. I got on the site okay and have my email with the code in, but I haven't tried to use it yet!
Thank you again!
Best wishes

Thanks Dave. ;D
I filled in all my details and got this message:
A registration has already been submitted for (my email address). :-\
I remember filling this out a while ago.
Does this mean I'm not allowed to get the free credits? :'(
-
Sorry Ruskie, not if you already registered.
If a friend or relative registers on a different address, they can send you their code which will work for you on SP.
SP are OK with this - I asked.
Dave
-
Thank you m'dear - I will try that. ;)
-
Thanks Dave,
Just got the credits so I can do a little more research.
Michelle

Glad it helped Michelle.
Thank you for the acknowledgement (and those of others). Not from a personal point of view (although that's nice), it just helps bring this back to the top of the threads and hopefully brings it to the notice of others.

Just in case some of you haven't also heard, until 1pm today UK time (Sat 27th June) you can also receive 20 free credits by adding the code (I've removed code now as offer is over) as found by fellow researchers in, I think, yesterdays edition of the Herald. It works as I tried it myself last night. Thanks to Jalkatz (from memory) , who shared this with me. Hope it helps others too, but you need to be quick.

It's a while since I looked at this thread.
Thanks for the acknowledgments.
Remember, if you have other friends or rellies that are willing to subscribe to ancestralscotland, you can use their code too.
I emailed SP a while back regarding this and they replied saying it was OK.

Dear Dave, This sort of help is invaluable to all given a credit crunch etc. Thanks again.
-
Credit crunch?
I'm just a tight Scotsman taking advantage of every freebie I can get.
Willing to share when I can.
Hope you get results.
Dave
-
It seems I share some Scotts blood, Cheers again.

Thanks very much for this tip. I had run out of time with 12 credits left and didn't want to buy 6 pounds worth just to use them up. I'm now can get four more records.....!!!! This great. :) Love this hobby. ...and hopefully someday will make it over to see my ancestors homeland...

"I filled in all my details and got this message:

I remember filling this out a while ago.

Just sign up with a new email address it's a bit time consuming to keep creating them but it works every time. I've probably created about a hundred.
-
You've found the loophole. I bet they'll get onto that before long though. You'd better keep a log of those email addresses. They can and will block them through The IP details or what ever thingy they can use. I think its the IP. ANyway- well done, spread the word.
-
Hi Dave,
Thank you from me too for telling us about the free credits on SP.
I was heading down the wrong way on my tree and thanks to your info, I used the credits for confirmation and Im now on the right track.
Thank you so much.

:D You never know what you'll find by browsing RootsChat! Thanks for the link, I've spent a heap on SP tracing my family, but have lots of info, and being Scottish, always enjoy getting a freebie!
Cheers, Anne ;D
-
Thanks for that. Every little helps as sometimes when I look at what I've got left I wonder what on earth I've done with it all. Great tip
-
This offer has been on the go since 2008 at least.
This thread is from 2009.
I'm glad it has worked it's way to the top again so people that missed it before, and 'newbies' can take advantage of it.
Remember you can apply for 10 credits for a single email address.
Dave
Register here http://www.ancestralscotland.com/

I seem to have signed up for the newsletter but can't find anything about the free credits - and have not been asked for a voucher code.
What have I done wrong?? :-\ :D
Wiggy ;D ;D ::)
-
Now that you have signed up, you should receive an email very soon from Ancestral Scotland telling you the voucher code.
You then log in to SP and input the voucher code to get your credits.

Thanks Dave! :D
