Title: Albert Edward Tudor born Wales 1875 lived in Niagara City
Post by: abeer on Wednesday 14 January 09 22:06 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I am Looking for any descendants of Albert Edward Tudor born 1875 in Gresford/ Llay near Wrexham North Wales but lived latterly in a nearby village called Cefn y Bedd (literal translation is back of the grave)
He emigrated to US in 1904 via Ellis Island and moved to Niagara City ward 8 by the 1910 census - living with his wife Ruth (Durie) who was from Banff Scotland. They had 3 daughters that I am aware of one of whom died as a young child (Minnie b 1914) the others were Mary Agnes (1911) and Ruth (1915).
I have the family tracked travelling back and forwards between Canada and Glasgow but never all of them together and have found a US Passport Application form for Ruth (Durie) with her photo on it.
Alberts brother Price Edwin Tudor(1879) also moved to the US but stayed in Ossining New York all his life working as a prison guard in SINGSING Prison ( family lore is that he was an executioner)  :o
The family still live in the near vicinity of where the two brothers grew up and would love to hear from Canadian/American descendants of the brothers.

There's a WWI Draft Registration Card for a Price Tudor in Niagara Falls, NY, which gives the birth date of 10 Nov. 1884.  He was listed as a prison guard, and his nearest relative looks like Albert Tudor at the same home address.  Any chance his birth date fluctuated a bit?

Hi,
I think that it is possibly him - I saw that and wondered the same thing - no-one likes to admit their age do they?
This is the only photo I have of him taken in the 1950s??

Either it's him or there's someone else with the same unusual name living a similar life.

There's a passenger list from Liverpool to NY from 8 Sep. 1928 which has a Price Tudor age 45, male, single, who was naturalized in Lockport NY County Ct. 3/1/1904 and was living at 122 Maine St., Ossining N. York.  That seems to fit in with the 1884 birth date and what you know about him.  There's also an incoming UK list from July 1928 that gives his age as 45, occupation as prison officer, and proposed address as Cefn-y-Bedd near Wrexham Wales.

However, there are other passenger lists that seem to fit more with the 1879 birthdate and the info still seems consistent with your information.  There's one from 1938 where he's 58, naturalized in Lockport in 1908, and living at 120 Main St., Ossining.  Maybe he changed his age on a whim or genuinely didn't remember how old he was?

Hi,
I believe he travelled back and forwards between US every other year and went elsewhere in between - there are  records of someone with the same name visiting Bermuda and the Carribean also. A well travelled man at the time and also an interesting career choice. I have found a photograph of Osinning prison guards from his era but he is not on this.
I also think that the brothers may not have emigrated together and the earliest date I have tracked them at Ellis Island is 1906 for Price and 1905 for Albert.
I don't think Price ever married but his brother Albert did - but as he had 3 daughters any descendants are going to have a different surname by now - I put the information in about Price his brother to make a connection to descendants as he would have been the only family member nearby from their fathers side and his occupation may have been talked about within the family.
Many thanks for your assistance

Alison

Do you think those two streets are actually the same with Maine Street being a typo on the passenger list? I tried using GoogleMaps to find a Maine Street and Main Street in Ossining and they only have it without the "e" now.

There were six UK incoming passenger lists that had Price Tudor on them all going to the same area of Wales as well as nine passenger lists entries which were into New York. Of the nine, two were returning from the Caribbean and the others from the UK.

Do you have a death date for either Albert or Price?  Or have it narrowed down?  If there's an obit out there, it might have Albert's daughters' married names and allow you to find the next generation.

Thinking about the age issue - maybe he deliberately shaved 5 years off?

Hi Jacquie,
I am told by my mother in law (thier niece) that Price died in 1958/9 but she never got to meet Albert and does not know when he died. Perhaps if Price had an obituary it may mention other family members on it?
Regards and Thanks for your help,

Alison

I have an obit for an ancestor who never married or had children, and it lists her siblings and nieces/nephews.

If Price might have died in New York state, this blog post mentions a way to do a look-up for death records:  http://ny-genes.blogspot.com/2008/03/new-york-state-vital-records-microfiche.html  If you make a request, I'd recommend giving the possible years and areas he lived in.

What a fantastic website!!

I found out that Price Tudor was indeed a death house keeper for 8 years at Singsing prison and he was definitely present at the execution of 2 infamous convicts who were named in the press. :o :o
He worked at Wingate prison latterly as a timekeeper.

In 1920 he was the subject of quite a bit of press attention due to the actions of his wife - a much younger woman called Beatrice born about 1896 ( not yet sure of her maiden name as her mother had remarried) who fell in love with a younger man only to be rejected by him - she then took poison when with him and tried to commit suicide at her young lovers side! :o :o
It transpired (so she said) that she was being blackmailed by him so that Price Tudor would not find out about her lover. She survived and Price forgave her - but it seems that the marriage did not last as there is no mention of him being married amongst the senior family members - no idea at all!

Still no info yet on Albert Tudor - he had 2 surviving daughters Mary Agnes and Ruth - except that Price may have returned to live in Niagara city with his brother upon retirement from the prison service.

Hello Alison
My name is Richard Evans I am the great grandson of Martha Ann Tudor the sister of Albert and Price Tudor. My grandmother was Florence Bray and my Father was Derek Evans. My father when he was alive did lots of research into the Bray/Tudor families and i have picked up the mantel in carrying this on after he passed away. I have found the posts on Albert Edward and Price extremely interesting and would love to share what I have and get in touch if that is ok with you.
Regards
Richard

good evening everyone.
my wife is the great granddaughter of their sister gertrude. I am currently trying to find out more on these brothers. I know albert worked for a power company and family rumours are that he actually did some work on the falls. I have recently found out that rice was a captain of the guards at sing sing. We actually live in LLay and maybe able to help regarding the area. I don't know when this original post is from but hopefully some of you are still members here and this message will get through to you all.
  thanks

I am the great-great-granddaughter of Albert. His daughter, my great-grandmother is Mary Agnes. My grandmother (her daughter) and mother are both still living so if there's something I don't know the answer to I can see if either of them know.

Your recollection of Albert and Price is correct as far as them working at the power plant and Sing Sing respectively. Ironically, Albert's daughter Mary Agnes married another Albert also, Albert John Cross.

I'd be happy to share any information I may have. I'm on Facebook also...profile pic is me laying in the grass with a blue shirt.

hi again, and thanks for replying.
I live in llay and my wife's family were born and bred here, so if i can help in anyway from this side ( photos etc ) feel free to ask. it seems they did indeed spend a lot of time travelling back and forth . I wonder what they did, where they stayed when back over here. albert was mentioned a few times within the family as the man who worked on niagara falls, and price as the brother who went with him but came home. no mention of him working in a notorious prison though. think i need to try and find out more about him. I  will have a look to see if i can find you on facebook,
