Here is a new site that may help you find some elusive New York Immigrants. CastleGarden.org offers free access to an extraordinary database of information on 10 million immigrants from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Over 73 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period.
This just opened today but looks good.

The New York State Archives will do searches of the military records that they have, which are listed here, for a fee of $1 or $3: http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/research/res_topics_mi_warsvc.shtml I recently got the WWI-era record for one of my husband's ancestors, and it gave his Army serial number, town of residence, when/where he enlisted, his age & place of birth, the companies/squadrons he was in, rank, wounds, if he served overseas, and when/where he deserted.

Great Idea will get on to this I have recently just found a picture of him shaking hands with Babe Ruth! Which an old Gran Aunt had, Im dying to find out more about him will keep going.

Old Fulton NY Postcard Website AND New York State Historical Photos & Newspapers.
www.fultonhistory.com
This is a wonderful, free resource not only if you're researching things in New York State, but anywhere including internationally. I've found an amazing variety of newspaper articles/references that have helped me a lot in my research.
The website began--and no I don't know the site owner nor is he paying me to shill for him--when one gentleman began selling postcards on a website back in 2000. He has since expanded and he's scanned over 50,000,000 newspaper pages. He adds thousands of pages monthly.
It takes awhile to get used to the site design and it's not intuitive in the beginning when you're learning to do searches. There are rare times when accessing the site is slow, but no more so than other sites. Those two things aside, what the person that started the website has done is amazing.
Somebody on this site started a thread a few days ago about a family member from England who was a ship's captain. He sailed in to New York Harbor in 1869 and that was the last time his wife in England heard from him. I did a simple search last night and pulled 69 records that mentioned her family member.

Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn has a new burial search that includes biographical information for the deceased than wasn't in their prior database. Right now, it covers burials from 1870-1897, but should expand to 1840-1937 in the future.

-
Thanks for the tip. I sure hope they get those earlier burials online because the Brooklyn death certificates only go back to 1866 and I've got some people who were probably buried at Greenwood before that.
-
It looks as though 1892 isn't included within 1870-1897 at the moment, so hopefully will be added soon. Good features on the search.
