Title: LYNCH family of Hull
Post by: Danchaslyn on Saturday 04 April 09 14:34 BST (UK)
 :)

Hello

This is a first time request from a newcomer for help please in tracing family, in Kingston upon Hull, and completely unknown as to the origins of this family, possibly Ireland?

Albert Lynch, b. 18 ? , lived at 210 Pickering Rd, W. Hull, m. Ann Lynch, (second wife). Please, who was Albert's first wife? Ann Lynch, his second wife, was a daughter of one of his uncles, his Uncle Edward being one of 20 children (of whom only about half survived?).

Of the 20 children, I know names of Edward (father of Ann?), Maria, Peter, Charles, Sydney, Ethel, Albert, Hilda.  Searching for names of rest of children, plus all their dates of birth please?

Edward Lynch and family (daughter Ann) may have been from Newport, Yorkshire?    ???

Albert Lynch and his first wife (name unknown) had Verona, Eileen, 1918, Albert b.1920, Audrey, Frederick, Daniel b.1928.  Please can someone help with birthdates?    ???

Has someone perhaps researched this family before?   ??? Any info much appreciated...

Cheers

Danchasyn

Hi,
Have you looked for your lot in freebmd  and the census?
The 1881 census is online free and searchable at the familyserach site of the LDS- this may enable you to nail down whole households of them.

Perhaps some more dates might help people to help: eg when did Albert live at 210 Pickering St Hull ?

Let us know how you get on and good luck,
charlotte

Hi CharlotteCH

Thanks for your reply and also didn't know that the 1881 Census is free online, have trawled through what I could see of all the Lynches on the 1901, but without joining, so not many details.

Please what is the LDS?

Albert and wife and family lived at 210 Pickering St definitely during 1928 when son Albert was born, until about only 25 years ago.  Don't know before that when they first lived there?

Cheers

Hello

Have a few more details which might help someone, to help me................

It's possible that Albert Lynch's, (b. 3 September, 1920), mother, or possibly his Grandmother, was Emily Bertha Cook. Emily was born in Hull.

And that Frederick William Cook, was a maternal Grandfather?  He and his family lived at Edinburgh Street, Hull.  Again, don't know the dates, but possibly Frederick William Cook was born anytime +/-  1895, again, in Hull.   ???

On Yorkshire free BMD I couldn't find marriages for both Albert Lynches, who both married the same Ann Lynch?    ???

Cheers

Hello Danchaslyn,

It's difficult to research the family in detail as they are not within searchable records. 1881 census is free to search; to 1901 on subscription sites and 1911 is searchable with a fee.

Free BMD can also be searched - still limited but may help.

Marriage:
December quarter 1915 Albert Lynch and Emily B Cook Sculcoates 9d pg 396

Would that be the first wife?

Back in a short while.

Not too sure re Albert from Bradford - you may have to discount the previous posts  ::)

I was looking for this family above- won't be able to give dates of birth but you could search Free BMD to see if there are matches.
I found a Sidney in Free BMD and have tried to match him to 1901 census- very unhelpful  ::)

If these are related to Albert- then Sheerness Kent comes into the equation.

Right!

Found the family with Edward in it - same one as 1901 but some names in 1891

1891 RG12; Piece: 3918; Folio 102; Page 29

Edward C Lynch 8 yrs b Hull (parents John and Maria) with all the children
living in Newington parish, Hull

BUT would you ever believe it - 1911 index indicates Edward C Lynch b 1883 and Edward Charles Lynch b 1884 both living Hull  :'(   One of these though has an Albert aged 19 yrs - so would be worth your while to get this.

This marriage also appears on www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk with the additional info that the wedding was held in St John (Newington).

I am puzzled still but think I am getting there.
The first thing to do is that you look at Free BMD and note down the Sculcoates Lynch births.

As I said before, 1901 has only shown John Lynch with full name - all the rest of the family have initials. I do believe that the oldest one is Edward aged 17 yrs in 1901.
Free BMD has a birth for Albert in 1896 and the 1901 has a son aged 5 yrs with the initial 'A' which has been transcribed as 'O'.
This seems great but that Edward would be Albert's brother rather than uncle.
(Unless there is another Edward).
Oh dear!

Second thing you must do is to get the 1911 transcript for Albert aged 15 yrs in 1911.

Post by: heywood on Saturday 04 April 09 22:18 BST (UK)
Back again-
what fooled me in the beginning was that I looked Emily Bertha up in Free BMD as born in Hull -that gave 1886. This would then have fitted in with the first Albert I found who was born 1885ish.

However, having had another look, there is also an Emily Bertha Cook born 1896 Sculcoates who I assume is your Emily.

I looked up Rully - a tram so I think that 'Carm' which has been written in  a different hand perhaps means 'carman'.

Hi Hewood,
I'm not trying to confuse things, but have you discounted the Emily B Cook (father Frederick mother Betsy) on the 1901 who is born in Cottingham, which back then the birth would have come under Sculcoates

Bee - I think she 's the one!
I was looking at other sites and noticed someone had written that re the Cooks - have you got her in 1901?

When I read that, I thought that as this one was Frederick, Mary Elizabeth may have been called Betsy  ???

I am assuming that you have the real one  ;) Confused  ??? ??? I don't know what you mean  ::) ::) ;D

Hi Heywood

I'm absolutely amazed and can't thank you enough, I'm still reading through all the wonderful info you've given me, and have looked up lots of births, deaths and marriages.

I think I have nearly all of the 20 children.........Uncle Albert Lynch, (b.3 Sept 1920) now 89 told me to-day, (he can't remember the full 20 children), that of the 20 children, Sydney married a Harriet (could be Granger/Grainger from the BMD link you gave me), and after Sydney's death, she married one of the brothers, Charlie.  Edward according to Uncle Albert is definitely the eldest of these children, and is his uncle.

To complicate matters further, Ann Lynch,  (Annie Ethel?) b. 1913 daughter of Edward Lynch, d. 1998-9?, married his father, Albert Lynch, as his second wife, after Emily Bertha Cook (Lynch), his first wife, died. (Think from BMD she died age 33, in 1929 in Hull).

When Albert Lynch Snr died (don't know when), his widow Ann, married her step-son, Uncle Albert. Don't know when and where this marriage took place, in Hull somewhere?   ???

Also, of course, Ann Lynch  (Annie Ethel) was the daughter of Edward Lynch, therefore Albert Lynch Jnr's cousin.   I think........I'm getting to tired to concentrate, so will resume to-morrow.    :-\

Thank you so very, very much...........

Goodnight

Oh my!!

Things for you to check:

Edward Charles Lynch married Fanny Granger in 1908 and Free BMD has a couple of children born to Lynch/Granger in 1919 and 1923 - a long time after  ???
However there are 4 births for Lynch/Grainger 1913-1917 which begin with Annie E. There is also a Fanny which seems to indicate that it is the same Edward and Fanny.

Somehow from 1911 I thought that this wasn't the Edward who is Albert's older brother.
Edward Charles married to Fanny
Edward C living with mother and siblings
Whether he is on census twice (with a different age too  ???) you will have to check.
Free BMD has Edward Charles Lynch b 1883 Hull but no other. ???
1901 only seems to have E C Lynch with John and Maria which brings us full circle.

You write:
I think I have nearly all of the 20 children.........Uncle Albert Lynch, (b.3 Sept 1920) now 89 told me to-day, (he can't remember the full 20 children), that of the 20 children, Sydney married a Harriet (could be Granger/Grainger from the BMD link you gave me), and after Sydney's death, she married one of the brothers, Charlie.  Edward according to Uncle Albert is definitely the eldest of these children, and is his uncle.

Sidney marries Harriet McWilliam in September quarter 1915
There is a marriage for Beatrice Lynch (is she one of yours?) to a Fred Granger in December quarter 1915.

well done Bee! So that means that Albert and Ann (if they married) would have married between 1929 and 1940.
Then Ann would have married Albert at a later date and I think he is still around aged 89 yrs.

What a mix up of characters.  ;D

Searched Ancestry from 1929 -1940 and can't find a suitable marriage for Albert Lynch, assuming that he got remarried in the Hull area, plenty of Albert Lynch marriages in other parts of the country.

Thank you so much for all your very hard work and I'm still trying not only to collate, but also as its so complicated, to follow it all!   :o

Had a very good, long, chat with Uncle Albert to-day, and he's particularly requested for any details from his mother, Emily Bertha Cook, b ? ? 1896, Sculcoates, d. age 33, Q4 1929 Hull, cause of death?   ???

Also, as to who her mother was?   ???  as we have Frederick William Cook of Edinburgh St, Hull, a Railwayman, as her father, and please both their dates of birth?

Where were the Cooks from?   ???  I think Bee, you mentioned that someone else somewhere has perhaps searched along these same lines?   :)

Hello Heywood and Bee and all

Yes, Beatrice Lynch,  did marry Fred Granger, or Grainger.   :)

Sydney Lynch married Harriet McWilliam.  After he died, Harriet married his brother, Charles, a widower, see below.

Charles Lynch's second wife was Harriet Mcwilliam  (don't know who his first wife was?)   ???

This confirmed by Uncle Albert...

I think that it was me who said that I had seen on another site someone metioning Cooks and Emily Bertha - I think I just googled the name- try it and see what happens!

Am not too certain re her- I have quoted a couple of possibles, discounted one of them after Bee found Emily B born Cottingham - look back in the thread - I have written Frederick as Frederick B- ancestry has him as something else but when I look again it is a squashed 'W' so think that one is right. Will try to change the initial back in the thread  :D

Hi I remember your Dad when I was a small kid living in West parade in Hull, there were only me and my brother Tony and our Mam Audrey nee Lynch anyway your Dad came and papered a wall and strange as it is I can still remember the pattern it was a polka dot.I saw him last at my mams funeral,I hadnt seen him for years but I still recognised him.How old is he now.Back to your search, your Dad was the son of Albert Lynch senior who is your great grandad and my Grandad,he was a trawler skipper and lived at 210 Pickering road in Hull. His wife before Annie was Emily Bertha who died very young in child birth. She gave him Verona,Eileen,Albert,Fred,Dan, and my mam Audrey.Annie and Albert had three children your dad,Gwen and John who has died.Theres a lot more that I could tell you but Im unsure what you know and although Verona ,Eileen,Dan and my mam have died Fred and Albert are still alive uncle Fred is a true star and I talk to him all the time he lives in Ipswhich and at 93 years old is still sharp as a knife, uncle Albert as you probably know lives in Market Weighton and is 95 I think.Let me know if you need any more or what you already know, are you in Hull.

Hi
Thank you for this info, I am confused as to what you mean by Albert senior and wouldn't he be my grandad and not my great grandad I'm still confused with it all. If owen(my dad) was the son of Albert and Annie, I thought that Albert died whilst she was pregnant
With her son Albert? Yes we are in hull, my partner is Giles lynch Owens son.

Also Albert senior is 93, and Owen is 81 so this is where somethings not right but I can't seem to find anything out

Hi I think your confused with the Albert's you refer to Albert senior been 93 but he is your dad's step brother, same father, but my Mam and her gang was Emily Bertha as their Mam,and Owen when and John were Annie's gang.same father,it gets very confusing I know all the answers but when people are living it gets difficult
There are reasons that you will not be able to figure out the dates but they are there.and make sense when you know.can you not ask Owen to enlighten you.by the way you were correct we have the same grandad I was thinking that you were another generation below me,I am 60 this year how old is Giles.
