Hi
Im hoping to find out about the ancestors and wife of Isaac Kingwell who im guessing was born around the 1870s or earlier. I know that he rented a farm in the village of shaugh prior, devon and that he had a son called George who also rented the farm.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Becca

Welcome to RootsChat Becca :)
Any idea when George was born? There's this family showing in 1881 but Isaac is quite a few years older than suspected

What do you think?

I think he was born around 1890, i know that George had four children; Arthur, Reginald, William and Stanley. I can't be sure of the dates of birth because the only evidence I have of them at the moment are pictures which are very vague. In the photo taken in the 1930s with his wife and children, he looks like he's in his 30s or 40s.
Thanks for the quick reply :)
It seems to all fit in if my guesses are off

Hmmm. Isaac Kingwell isn't a very common name. I had a look and can't find another one that fits.
I traced this George a bit further. He's still unmarried in 1901 but the 1911 census index (www.1911census.co.uk) seems to show him (the full details are pay per view) in the Plympton district with father Isaac, wife Evelyn and children Arthur age 6, Percy age 4 and Stanley age 2. FreeBMD shows that Percy's full name was Percy Reginald. George Samuel Kingwell married Evelyn Kennard in 1904.
I wrote this earlier, so just so I don't have to do it again if it turns out to be the right family after all.
If you want to search for Isaac's marriage then you can go to www.freebmd.org.uk . When you find him, click on the page number to see who were the possible brides. You'll see 2 female names - knowing her first name (1881 shows that she's Ann H), there will be only one possible.
Then go to www.familysearch.org and find Issac's christening. (You should see 3 records - make sure you only trust the one that says 'Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record')

Thanks :)
It makes a lot of sense, there's just a few differences by names to what i have.
thanks for your help
i will try and find out more from my relatives to see what they know
thanks again :)

Maybe ask them if they remember if George's full name was George Samuel, and if his wife was Evelyn.
Please come back here with your discoveries :D
-
They don't know his full name, but his wife was called Evelyn.
It is all starting to seem very accurate, i think he might actually be who i'm looking for :D
Thanks! :)

George is staying with his sister Emma Templeman in 1901 in case the name rings a bell with anyone.
OK, so we were looking for Isaac's ancestors. Have you identified his christening?
1841 census
HO107/218/17 5 5
Ugborough, Devon
Sl Kingwell, 35, Ag lab
Mary, 30
George, 8
Isaac, 6
Thomas, 3
John, 11 months
/
Julia Newman, 65
All born in county
The 1841 census doesn't show relationships but I'm not at all excluding that Julia is Samuel Kingwell's mum in law :D
The 1851 census shows that both Samuel and Mary were born in Ugborough.

The 1891 census shows living at Shaugh Prior:
Isaac KINGWELL Married 56 Farmer b. Ugborough

Isaac KINGWELL was baptised at Ugborough, 1 Mar 1835, son of Samuel & Mary, (father a labourer of Ugborough).
Samuel KINGWELL married Mary NEWMAN at Ermington 3 Sept 1829.

Hi there,
I can't actually see this photo as it is listed as private, but my grandmother was Annie Glanville Kingwell and I would be very interested in seeing this.
Thanks
