Hello,
I am trying to find any records about Harriett Arnold born in Victoria in 1869 father WIlliam Arnold mother Eliza Morton. In about 1895 she and other mamebers of her extended family, mother, brother and amny cousins travelled to Western Australia. I have located one of the families in the Serpentine region.
While I have been able to track the marriages and deaths of the extended family memebers that she travelled with, all in West Australia records, including cemetery records, I have been unable to find any trace of Harriett.
There is a marriage for a Harriett Arnold to a George Nicholls Hunter but thi is not her. I have been in correspondence with mebers of her famimly and we are both quite sure that this is a different Harriett Arnold who was born in West Australia.
I have been informed that she married a Robert Higgins and died in West Australia, but I can find no marriage or death for her related to Higgins. Harriett was listed as living on her mother's death certificate in 1925.
Any assitance in tracing Harriett would be appreciated.

ARNOLD, Harriet Father William Mother Morton Elizabeth Cast 1872/22050
There is no marriage reference in W.A. to 1949 for a Harriet Arnold or
Robert Higgins.
No marriege in Vic to 1942 and no death in Vic to 1985

Thankyou for that information.
I have all the Victorian indexes at home and have searched minutely over the last 7 years.!!!!!!
I have traced all the births deaths and marriages of her parents and siblings, her mother spent 18 years in WA before dying in Elsternwiwck Victoria in 1923.
Her brother John Robert Arnold died in Perth in 1928.
Like you no trace in WA or Victorian records. I wonder if she changed her name. One of her sisters changed her name from Elizabeth to Isabella!!! It took several conversations to convince her grandchildren that her birth certificate was for Elizabeth not Isabella.
People constantly change names, my niece Briony is now Alana!!!! So if harriett altered he name she will be impossible to trace.

Hi Robyn.
Ancestors! Hmmm, if only they knew the trouble they put us through
when they do such things as change names etc :) bless em!.
Good luck.

sounds like you have tried everything.
Do you have an actual date of death or buriel for Elizabeth Arnold nee Morton, Perhaps her funeral notice may give further clues, Ie Harriet??? of ???.
I see that at least three of her children also died in Victoria.

Cant find this Harriett Arnold you say was born in WA which was the one you said married George Hunter. Theres a death for a Harriett Hunter in 1926 in Wellington WA which is around Serptentine, could family be wrong as theres no harriett marrying a robert higgins?
-
Hi Winbursh...like you I cannot find the Harriett ARNOLD birth reg in WA that Robyn's refers to. However didn't trawl for variations in spelling of names etc.
Robyn - Have you searched the electoral rolls for a Robert HIGGINS in WA to see who else is at the same address? May give you a clue to her new given name.
Have you searched to see who is buried with Robert HIGGINS at
http://www.mcb.wa.gov.au/NameSearch/GenResearch.html
Have you searched for any births to a Robert HIGGINS in WA where parents are named.
Perhaps Harriett's marriage to a Robert HIGGINS was a 2nd marriage.

Cando,
Thanks for those many suggestions .
Perhaps for all concerned I will add some more details.
I have been researching this family for 12 years. HARRIETT is the only child I have not been able to find a marriage for or a death.
I have traced descendnts of one branch who went to Canada whilst the others camea to Australia.
Harriett was 8th child of William Arnold born in Ireland and Eliza Morton also born in Ireland who married in St Andrews Church Brighton in 1856. All children were born in Victoria in Brighton or the Castlemaine area near Bendigo.
I hold the death certificates for them and ALL their children except for Harriett and John Robert the youngest child who who both went to WA. I have found John Robert's marriage and death in WA records but have not ordereed them as they may not help to locate Harriett.
The Harriett Arnold marrying George Nicholls Hunter in WA is not their child.
I cannot find a Robert Higgins marrying a Harriett *******,
I have explored all different surname spellings including Arnel, ONel, etc.
Family lore says she eloped with a married man, but that story is put into doubt with the discovery that her mother and brother and many cousins also moved there at the same time.
Harriett's siblings were
Mary Jane married William Abbott (my great grandparents) died 1943 Sandringham
Sarah married John Carlson died 1946 Bonbeach Vic Hit by tram
William married Louisa Davis died 1920 Queensland.
Harriet (1) b1866 died 1868)
Joseph married Matilda Lamb died 1942 South Melbourne
Elizabeth also known as Isabella married George Hunter died1970 Caulfield aged 99
Rebecca died 1951 Melbourne
John Robert died 1928 Perth
I have also traced and documented their children.
I have not checked electoral rolls or death notices. Will do this.

Hi again,
Have double crossed checked the Higgins burials.
Possibility was Robert Colquhorn Higgins and Elizabeth Harwood Higgins.
no marriage in WA. 2 children Alexandra1900 and Thomas 1901 in records, but also Robert Harwood Higgins in cemetery, in marriages but not births. He ws born in Melbourne in 1893 and sister Flora 1895.
In the Vic records 1889 her place of birth is Cambridge. So I think we can eliminate this couple.
The Harriett Janet (86 in 1993 = bc 1907) in with Robert Higgins also shows up in 1936 electoral roll but is way way to young to be HArriett Arnold b 1869.

Robyn has anyone actually sighted either of the certificates of Harriett's ARNOLD's marriage in 1905 and death in 1926 in Western Australia to completely eliminate this as your Harriett?
Cheers

Hi Robyn
Could this be your Harriett?
1903 electoral roll has
Harriett HIGGINS, home duties, Zulu Creek, Corryong, Division of INDI
Robert Dawson HIGGINS, Miner, same address.
Can't see her with this name anywhere else - there is another Harriett Higgins living in Colac area later but her bloke is not Robert.
Cheers, Judith

Hi Judith ;D
This couple were married in Vic.
HIGGINS Robert Dawson born England
JONES Harriet born England

Hi,
A note.
Although George Nicholls Hunter is memorialised at Karrakatta, he appears to have died in Geelong Victoria.

Sue,
just checked and cannot see his death in Victoria, perhaps he died in WA and he was from Geelong, Victoria might have been there visiting?
Jenn
-
Hi Jenn,
Yes.
More likely. I totally got that backwards ;D
No sign of Harriett in either cemetery though.
Unless you can see her in Vic.
Sue
ADDING : Further information on the above to eliminate/confirm him as a candidate for Harriett's husband.
Hunter, Jean Mary is at the same location as George, in the adjoining niche.

The Harriet Arnold who married George Nicholls Hunter was born in 1884. Again too young for my Harriett b 1869 . I have been in correspendece with her great granddaughter. George Nicholls Hunter was born in NSw in 1880 to George Hunter and Harriet Elizabeth Moss.
I have also looked at the fiche in the BAttye Library on two occasions and Harriet is not the one from Victoria.
Several years ago I wrote to a contact in the AGS publication and got all the details. Sadly lost in a change of house.
Can quite positively rule this couple out.

I am still no further forward with this lady. I have scoured Qld records as well as NSW.
I would have thought that being born in 1869 she woul dbe deceased by 1979 and 1985 for NW and Victorian records. Qld still finish earlier and in WA I have scoured cemeteries etc ad even goen to Perth to look in the Battye Liibrary.
Many years ago I corresponded with a decendant of Harriet Arnold who married George Hunter and I a satisfied that she is not th elady in my tree.
Electoral rolls have not hepled so fara.
Any other ideas will be appreciated

Hi Robyn,
Some thoughts
Do you have any thoughts of a possible middle name for Harriett, or do you know of her sponsors names from baptismal card perhaps .... thinking she may have been known by those names.
Harriett ... several of my forebears carried that name, variations in spelling on online indexes included Harriott and Marriell but the actual records read Harriet (one "t") .... Perhaps Arnold could be wrongly indexed as say Ornold etc ...
Hope these thoughts help
Cheers,
JM
-
JM,
No middle name for her at all.
Check all spellings even H*T
Her sister changed her name from Elizabeth to Isabella (not on legal documents though) and U have a good dispute with her grandchildren who insist that she Isabella and never Elizabeth, but birth cert, marriage cert, and death cert, and registrations of all children have her as Elizbeth. I knew her as Gaunt Isabel and if my mother still going sttrong at 83 hadn't known that she was really Elizabeth she may have been harder to trace.
There is the real posibility that she changed her name also.
The group of Arnolds, MCLaughlins , McKelvies who went to WA betwenn 1895 and 1901 seemed to have been in involved with a religious sect. Many are buried in "Bretheren" graves in Karrakatta. So she may well have married and gone o's with the sect.

Do Brethren keep records of all their members, do you know? Like we keep baptismal records etc I mean?
Is that worth a go?

I would have thought the marriage posted in Vic in reply#11 would have eliminated them from your research :).
Cando

Cando,
For me that definitely ruled out the Harriet Arnold & Higgins marriage and I am not even looking there.
I have also ruled out the Harriet Arnold George Nicholls Hunter marriage.
But I still do not know what happened to her. She was still living aged c 46 when her mother died in 1925 . Her siblings lived to be mostly 80 and over. So if she is not with the bretheren then she may not show up in online records for some time. One sister lived to 100.
thanks for your continued interest

Hi,
My name is Christine Hunter. I have information on Harriett.
She was born in Castlemaine Vic in 1872, parents William Arnold and Eliza Morton. She had an older sister also named Harriett who died prior to the second Harriett being born.
Around 1900 Eliza, Harriett, sister Rebecca and brother John moved to Fremantle WA where they had a boarding house. George Nicholls Hunter lodged there and married Harriett in 1905, she put her age down by 4 years as she was 8 years older than George. Eliza and Rebecca later returned to Victoria.
They had 5 children, Gwendoline Maud, James Allen, Barbara Madge, George Nicholls (Jnr) and Kenneth Arnold (my father in law).
George (Snr) died in 1949 and Harriett in 1956, they are buried in Bunbury cemetery.
George (Jnr) moved to Geelong and died on a trip back to Perth, he was cremated at Karrakatta cemetery and his ashes returned to his family in Geelong.
My father in law Kenneth married Jessie Allen, they had 3 children - Lorraine Joan, George Arnold (my husband) and Maxwell Allen.
My husband George has 3 sons from his 1st marriage, we have none together. My husband is the last George Hunter.
I hope this answers all the questions.
Please email me if you require further information. I have all relevant certificates - births, marriages and deaths.
Regards,
Christine Hunter

Harriett Arnold is my husbands grandmother. She married George Nicols Hunter in Fremantle in 1905 and is buried in Bunbury Cemetery - she died in 1955. She had 5 children - Gwen, Madge, George, Allan & Ken (my husbands father). My husband is also George Hunter - alive and well, 3 sons, 3 grandchildren, all living in WA.
