I am hoping to contact family members descended from:
John McCabe & Ellen/Helena Butler of Kilkenny, Ireland or
Charles Jarrett & Elizabeth King of the Ballina, NSW region.
John & Ellen had at least 3 children who came to Australia - Patrick, Bridget Thomas & John. Thomas married Harriet Jarrett in 1873 and they had 6 children in the 1870's & 1880's in the Bellinger River area - Ellen, Elizabeth, John, Harriet, Agnes & Thomas.
These children went on to marry into the Gaddes, Mackay, Lyons, Campbell & Tait families.
It would be wonderful to find that there are old photos available somewhere as nothing has ever come down to the present generation.
Any information appreciated,
Regards,
Jeff Carroll

Dear Jeff,
There is a Historical Society in Bellingen
Bellingen Historical Society
Council Grounds, Hyde Street
Bellingen NSW 2454
Tel. 02 6655 1262
There is also The Richmond River Historical Society, which covers Ballina
http://www.richhistory.org.au/
I have looked up the White Pages for Gaddes (as it was the most unusual of the names) and they are still in the Belligen/Nambucca/Grafton area.
http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/initResSearch.do
Do you have the births/deaths/marriages for these families? They will be on http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm
Cheers
Susie

Hi Susie,
Thank you for your suggestions. I've had contact with the Historical Societies mentioned but have not had a lot of success with information on the McCabe's. Stan McCabe the cricketer was part of the family, as was Bishop Thomas McCabe.
There is significant information regarding Charles Jarrett (his own journals, newspaper columns & at least one book based on his writings). Substantial information is also available for Elizabeth King's family. Some wonderful stories. The RRHS holds a great deal. I also have quiet a few BDM's.
I was hoping this post would reach some of the descendants that may be also dabbling in the family history. If I get no success here I'll consider 'Plan B' of attempting to track down the families more directly - something I don't particularly like to do. Sometimes though, you've got to do what you've got to do.
Many thanks again,
Jeff.

Dear Jeff,
Some links for Bishop McCabe and a photo from the Illawarra Images (Wollongong Library)

There is also heaps on Stan McCabe.
Sounds like you have a good deal of information.....just need a relative to come to to fore!
Cheers

Thank you for supplying the photo Susie.....it's the best one I've ever seen of the Bishop. He must have been camera shy!!
Yes, I just seem to skirt 'round the McCabe's - one day someone will pop up.
Best regards,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I am a descendant of Charles Jarrett and Elizabeth King. Haven't been on here long, so I feel really lucky to have been 'found'.
My line is: Charles and Elizabeth's daughter, Sarah Anne Jarrett married Donald McCurdy Wells. Their daughter Sarah Anne Wells was my maternal grandmother, and she married Frederick James Kenney. Their youngest daughter is my mother.
Unfortunately, I don't have anything in the way of photos etc. My mother's eldest sister was very keen on family history and her findings have stayed with one of her grandsons, though, if I got in touch, I'm sure I could get copies of anything they have.
Love to hear from you.
Tracey.

And I don't know that I can help you much, Jeff....but the little toddler in my avatar picture is a descendant of Robert Raymond Mackay whose sister Jane Mackay married William Gaddes in 1856! ;D ;D
I really haven't done very much research into my little grandaughter's maternal ancestry yet. Her other grandparents still live in the area you have mentioned.
Dee :D :D

Thanks Dee, nice to know family is still in the area. If you'd like the information I have, you are most welcome to copies.
All the best,
Jeff

Sorry about the delay in my reply, Jeff. I've only just got home again after a few days with my elderly mother.
Your offer is very kind, and maybe I can contact you by PM. Getting back to old photographs, I'll ask my daughter in law if she knows of any old Mackay family photographs.

On the Pike family tree I have a Maude Jerret, parents James and Mary Jerrett, I think they are connected to the Jarrett family of Ballina as Maude Pike`s first two children were born at Lismore, Catherine E Pike in 1891-1892 & Herbert J Pike in 1893.
Benjamin & Maude Pike immigrated to NZ.
John Patrick Jarrettet came to Ballina in 1868, nephew of Charles, he had 11 children, including a James Jarrett who I think could be the father of Maude Pike.
Look forward to your reply.
Sue.

Hi Sue,

Hi Jeff,
Thomas and Harriets son Thomas McCabe was my grandfather,
He married Mary Ellena Murphy, they had 6 children Kevin, Jack, Vince, Patrick, Marg, and my mother Agnes, Patrick is the only one surviving.
I believe Thomas and Harriet actually had 12 children the 6 you named plus Mary, Hugh, Patrick, Robert, Dora, and Marguerite. My grandfather named one of his sons Patrick and one of his daughters Marg after Marguerite, this suggests I may be right.

Hi Jeff,
In regard to Mary Ellena Murphy 1893, I think Mary was born in Woolloomooloo Sydney, the family went to the gold fields in Western Australia. Unfortunately her mother died in Perth aged 36 (1908), Mary was about 14 years old and the others much younger, the children were sent over to the Bellinger river area where they worked on a farm. Mary eventually met Tom McCabe, I have Marys family tree going back to the indestructible Mary Finn (Limerick)1839 1940, I will post her family tree FYI.
Best Regards,
Brian Smith

Hi there Brian,
Apologies for the late reply. I've been away from this branch of the family for some time now. Grand information re Mary Ellena Murphy. Thank you so much for supplying it. You've straightened my mind on the workings of that part of the tree. Many new names that I've not come across before. This is a BIG family!!
Mary FINN just kept on going didn't she?
I would strongly suggest you contact a wonderful woman on rootschat (if you haven't already) - Chinka. She has commented on this topic in the past. She's much more closely related to you and I'm sure you two will have a lot to talk about.
If I come across anything new I'll certainly post the information.
All the best,
Jeff

I have a photo of Thomas McCabe and his wife Harriet McCabe (nee Jarrett). They were my great grandparents. I still live in the Bellinger Valley not far from where they raised their 12 children including Hughie (my grandfather). Unfortunately the file is too large to send as an attachment but if anyone is interested I can email it to you.
-
Hi there Roger,
'Chinka' sent me a dozen or so delightful old photos some time ago, including one of Thomas & Harriett. If I read it correctly I think it says from Solomon Studio in the bottom right section. You'll soon work out who Chinka is....I believe she has left a message for you after your post went up. Bellinger Valley - such a pretty place. You're lucky to live there!!
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Glad you have the photo of Thomas and Harriet, it is a lovely old picture. I do know "Chinka" and now remember her telling me about this site some time ago, must give her a call. Have you any information regarding children of Mary McCabe, she died in a car accident on the Dorrigo Mtn in 1914 aged 28 and was one of Thomas and Harriet's children. I thought she may have had a child but have not found a record yet, she was married to her uncle (John McCabe) at the time.
I am very happy and lucky to live in the Bellinger Valley and raise my kids here, one of my daughters is called Harriet.
Cheers,
Roger.

Hi Roger,
Ah....that skeleton is out of the closet now!! Yes, John & Mary Magdaline married in 1905. Her father Thomas signed consent on the certificate as she was only 20. Unusual marriage though and 37 years difference in age. Lore has it that it tore the family apart - some for, some against the marriage. On Thomas McCabe's death certificate there is no mention of his daughter Mary Magdaline. Obviously Thomas' son (and Mary Magdaline's brother) Robert (the informant) was one of the ones against as he would have supplied his siblings names for the death registration.
There was one child (our line). Mary Ellen McCabe (known as Nell) was born in Marrickville in 1907. She married Augustus Allan Hardie (a Urunga boy) in 1923. Mary Ellen died in 1992 and was buried in Mullumbimby, however there is no marker on the grave. I know of one photo of mother and daughter (Mary M & Mary E) together and I have a later photo of Mary Ellen as well. PM me your email if you'd like copies.

Hi everyone,
I’m keen to find out exactly where Thomas McCabe came from in Ireland. My grandfather John (Jack) Hunter was son of Dora Matilda McCabe. Her father was Thomas McCabe (husband of Harriett). And his father was John McCabe. Do I have this right? Any information would be much appreciated.
