Title: Anyone researching the Botes family
Post by: Lorand on Wednesday 20 May 09 06:22 BST (UK)
Hi,

Is there anyone researching the Botes family, who were mainly farmers in 1800's and lived in Blomfontein and Kinberely areas.

Thanks
Lorraine

Hi there - thanks Tertius for joining up - we have some very helpful people here! you can deal directly with Lorraine now.

Lorraine I have found a Susara Maria Botes born 1897 and died 1979 in Bela Bela but no mention of a husband. Could be a possibility.

Thanks Rutti and TertiusB

I would appreciate any help as my father's side is a real problem, due to the fact that they all lived in S Africa and we lived in Rhodesia.  I only saw my oama, Susara a few times in my life so was not that close to her.  However, the problem is that I don't know her maiden name.  Botes was obviously her married name, but there again, I don't know her husband's name.  I am more or less sure she died between 1963 and 1965 and maybe in Bloemfontein as she lived with her daughter, Miems Beckley a lot of the time.
I seem to recall that the Beckleys may have owned a small business ... laundry, cafe?? ???

Lorraine

Just remembered ... My Botes grandfather died just after my brother was born, as I remember my dad leaving for the funeral.  My brother was born Nov 1952, so would  have been  1952-1953.

Also my dad was always known as Chris Botes and never by Jacobus or Johannes, and these two names could have been the other way around.

Hello Lorand

I've spoken to-day to various Rhodie family members who know the addresses and businesses where your rellies were in Slbs.  They will be asking around of others, who may have personal knowledge of your family.   ;D

Also, one suggestion is that your Grandmother's family, may have been on one of the Treks?

Many Rhodie people (especially the Afrikaans speaking ones), had first trekked there from maybe the Orange Free State, (close to Kimberley), or wherever, on the numerous Moodie Treks, or the van der Byl Trek, and so on, and then, later, maybe even a generation later, returned to live in South Africa.    8)

Googling of the some of the Treks, or trawling through "Trek" books in a library, may give you some surname leads for your family.   ;)

Cheers

Hi Danchaslyn,

Yes, now I recall my dad mentioning that his people were on the treks, but I wouldn't know which one.  I'll try and find out more.  My dad was the only one of the family who lived in Rhodesia.  His mother Susara always lived in S A and I know they farmed in the Free State.  He was the youngest of 11 children.  Not all of them lived to adults though.

I have PM you with my email address if you would like to contact me further.

Thanks for all your help

Hello Lorand

It is amazing how one little clue can bring back memories one hasn't thought of for years and years.   ;)

Try, try and remember, if you ever heard the name of the Free State farm??   ???

If we had that, it really wouldn't be to difficult to find out the farm's family history!   ::)

Glad the trek jolt helped, as there wern't very many on the treks, if is definitely another search to try.   ;)

And, yes, thank you for your PM, to-day we had no electricity until half an hour ago, so will be emailing you soon.

Cheers

Hello Lorand

As you know the rough death date of your Ouma, Susara Maria Botes, i.e. +/- June-July, 1964, probably at, or near Bloemfontein, I would suggest that you email the Archivist, in the VAB or RSA site of NAAIRS, and request a copy of her Death Notice.

I've had another look myself in both the VAB and RSA sections of NAAIRS to see if her Death Notice reference would be there, but couldn't find it, but an email direct, should, hopefully, produce the results you are looking for.

Cheers

Hello Lorand

As you know, traditionally, in Afrikaans speaking families, the eldest son is named after his father, or his grandfather.

From IGI there are several Jan Jakobus Botes, and variations.

Interestingly, some are from Brandfort, Orange Free State.  Makes me think they could be possible branches on your tree?

i.e. Jan Jakobus Botes, b. 1851 Brandfort, OFS, m. 19 April, 1892, d. 16 Feb, 1926.

And, Jan Jakobus Botes, b.1873, Bloemfontein, d. 1899 Brandfort, OFS.

Jan Jonathan Botes, b.1878, m. 20 Feb, 1905 Anna Marria du Plessis, Zastron, OFS.

Hi,

My dad was the youngest of about 11 children, so not sure who he would have been named after, but I will check the IGI again with the Botes family.
Thanks for all the leads you have put in.

Hello Lorand

Well that's a clue in itself, as your Dad had  THREE Christian names, so as he had Johannes Jacobus, and then Christopher, that would fit in with him being towards the end of the family, and having a third Christian name to distinguish himself from the possibly previously named elder brother, or brothers.

Good, good luck with tracing your parents' marriage details!

Danchaslyn

There is alot of the same names in the family downline, when they had many children they named them after their brothers and uncles as well.

Jan Jakobus Botes b 1851 Brandfort OFS had 12 children of which Jan Jakobus b 1873 Bloemfontein was one of his sons. He had another son with the names Jan Jakobus Hendricus Saaiman Botes. Here he gave his wife's fathers firstname and surname as additional names.

We must just keep on digging, and we will find Lorraine's line. I will go and look in the archives when I go to Pretoria again.

Hello TertiusB

That is so cool that you already know of two of the JJ Botes, and that they are a father and a son!   8)

Are they in your Tree then?   ???

Thank goodness you can get into the Pretoria Archives and search there.  What a treasure trove there must be there!    ;)

It's so frustrating that Lorand's Family Bible didn't show her Ouma's maiden name!!   :(

Any chance you, or someone you know, may be able to check her parents' marriage record, the wedding having taken place in Mayfair, JHB?   ???

I can find out regarding her parents marriage record, but need both their full names and marriage date.

Hi TertiusB and Danchaslyn,

Thanks to both of you for all the effort you have put into this.  Just to recap....
My parents marriage was on 20 October 1945 at the Mayfair Presbyterian Church, JHB.

My mom ..... Janet Gilmour MCCALL b 3 May 1922 in Fife Scotland
MY dad ........Johannes Jacobus Christoffel BOTES b 22 Nov 1921 in Kimberely

I have just got info on a  Jacomia Maria BECKLEY married to Johannes Saaiman BECKLEY lived in Free State in 1960s.  This could be my dad's sister, nicknamed Miems.  My dad's names could be in a different order as well.  He was always only ever known as Chris.

Hello TertiusB and Lorand

Tertius that is great that you may be able to get the details of Lorand's parents' marriage.  What a step forward that will be!   ;D

And, Lorand, congratulations on finding "Miems"!   ;D ;D

Aaaaah  no, let's hope that your Dad, Chris' names aren't reversed, or transposed, or whatever, then the permutations could be endless!   ;)

Lorand, I also have a dear friend in Fife, which town/village were your Mom's family from, please?

Hello to you both again,

I can't wait to see if Tertius can get a marriage cert.  It would be like finding the golden key which would unlock all the mystery and I would be able to go from there with the correct names.

Danchaslyn, my mother was born in Cluny,  Auchterderran, Fife.  It was just a small village in those days and has probably grown a lot.  The house she was born in was Denside Cottage, which is still there and I would love a photo of it, if someone nearby could take one for me ;D
The direct location is easy to get off Google Maps ... just key in Denside Cottage, Cluny, Fife.
Thank you
Lorraine

Hello

Yesterday I visited my old lady Rhodie, in-law rellie, whose own mother was on one of the "Moodie Treks" from SA, to Rhodesia and asked her, and her daughter, everything I could, about your questions.    ???

Of course they remember businesses and places in Salisbury, which you mentioned to me, but unfortunately, not the people. They had no idea how to trace names of folk on the treks, and instead asked me to find their rellies on the treks, "Stols",  and "Steyns"!   ::)

They also asked me to trace other rellies of theirs, two of whom, survived one of the Viscount aircraft crashes, after it had been shot down by terrorists!   >:(

Lorand, with Tertius's great offer, and all his expert Botes knowledge, and I've still to ask my rellies near Bloem, about Free State Farmers, once we have the surname, we'll all get there in the end.    ;D

Cheers

Just for general information to al your BOTES-seekers: There were 16 BOTES 'Voortrekker-stamvaders' participating in the GROOT TREK. However, none of them was named Jacobus Johannes Christoffel. There was a Jan Jacobus * Baviaansfontein, Koup, district Beaufort 26.8.1800 and who later settled in the districts of Winburg and Bloemfontein. He could be the ancestor of Lorand's people, but that will be a great guess of course. Maybe Tertius  has some info on him and his descendants.

Kind regards
Johann

Hi Johann,

My dad was Jacobus Johannes Christoffel BOTES, born 1921 and died in 1985, so he would not have been in the GROOT TREK. He was born in Kimberley and the youngest of many children.

His mother's first names were Susara Maria ? (I don't know the maiden name) died c 1964, and not sure of his father's first names. His father died  early 1950s. I think they may have been on the trek in their youth.  They would have been born in 1880s - 1890s.

Winburg and Bloemfontein sound like probable areas they may have settled. They farmed for many years.

One of my dad's sisters was Jacomina Maria Botes, married to  Pieter Johannes Saaiman BECKLEY and lived in Bloemfontein in 1960s.
Another sister was Gertie - brothers, Jaapie and Boet (all nicknames). That is about all the info I have unfortunately, and I'm just hoping that someone may have these names in their family tree, especially my ouma, Susara Maria, as I would like to make a start with her side.

Can you let me know when the Great trek took place and were any of the Botes'  French Huguenots via Holland?

I can't do any research into 1800 until I find the more recent ancestors. so would appreciate any help, Johann.

Thanks Lorand

I meant to ask ...

Does anyone know what information is put onto S African births, marriage and death certificates prior to 1947?  My birth cert. (Johannesburg) does not state my parents names, only place and date.

If there is no mention of parent's names, it is no use me applying for my dad's birth or death cert to get started on his family.

Hi Lorand,

Please feel free to contact Willie Botes on Facebook at

As well as at

Most probably he has all the answers on your questions. I supplied him with some Botes info.

The Botes progenitor is not from Huguenot descendant. Die Groot Trek took place 1835-1838.

You are welcome to send me a private message.

Best wishes

Hello Lorand

So very, very glad for you that Johann Claassens has at last unlocked your Botes Puzzle for you!

Also, on a South African Death Certificate prior to 1947, to answer your question, you will be given the parents full names, possibly the parents place of birth, as well as the Deceased's place of birth, date of birth,  date of death, place of death and cause of death.

The person who was present at the time of death, and who notified the authorities of the death, and possibly the doctor's details will also be given.

If the person died in a hospital, those details will be given.

This is my experience anyway, so good luck

Cheers

Hi Tertuis, I  hope I'm not doing anything wrong and unmannerly but I  am desperate.  I am from the Botes family, my father was Johannes Hendrik Botes, unfortunately that is the extent of my knowledge. I think my Dads family lived in Boksburg or around that area I  know that I had an uncle who lived in Krugersdorp, he's name was John, wife Sarah and sons Johnny, Andre and Charl, as far as I can remember lived in Kingdon, Street 76, an address I found amongst my mothers papers. Please say that you can help me, I am Hester Marryatt. :) :)

Hester - do you have a copy of your dads death notice? It should list his parents names. It is held in the transvaal archives and you can order a copy very cheaply through EGGSA stating the reference

This is it:
DEPOT     TAB

BOTES, Johannes Hendrik

Surviving Spouse Hester Loretta BOTES - this is probably a  transcription error.

Hi hmarryatt,

I only know that my grandmother's name was dollie. But she born a Wassermann and got married into the Botes Family. She was not born a Botes.

To the rest, guys you can also go on facebook and look up Henriette vander merwe. She has all the information of the family. She is the daughter of my aunt Betty, or look up Henk Botes on facebook. He is the last remining HG Botes, the fourth generation. He is much older and will give you all the history of the farms Mooidam, Hammanskrall and the third farm. There is still land that is owned by my Grand fathers cousint's wife Sannie Botes.

We even bought Willie Botes's book but we did not get far, I never realised how important it is to keep in touch with family even though we lived in Northern Rhodesia.

Hi

My father was Izak Jeremia Botes born 9 May 1933

His parents was Izak Jeremia Botes a farmer from Calvinia  he married a widdow by the name of Francois or it could be Francina Jacoba Magdalena van Rooyen maiden name Faul in 21 12 193.

My dad was the only Botes child from this union. Francina the widow had 11 Van Rooyen children, of which I dont have any record

Does anybodies family tree, have a record of Izak Jeremiah Botes.

I dont know how true it is but I have also had word that the Botes family tree originates from the French Hugenotes. Apperently they fled from France via Holland and changed their surname from Botace to Botes to hide their identities?

If anybody has further Information on this I will greatly appreciate the feedback.

Kind Regards

Hey there,

I am looking for information on my Great-Grandfather (his parents/grandparents).

Andries Johannes BOTES (Great-Grandfather)
Born 8 October 1897, Brandfort, Free State, South Africa
Died:  31 August 1949, Christiana, North West, South Africa
Married:  (Date?) Bultfontein, Vrystaat
               Isabella Hendrika ENSLIN (Great-Grandmother)
               Born:  17 March 1900
               Died:  2 September 1955

On MyHeritage site it said Andries Johannes Botes was the child of:
Wiets Jacobus BOTES 1875-1921 and,
Johanna Maria Magdalena (born MAAS) 1841-1899
but according to my research he is not their child, according to online information and according to the text book Suid-Afrikaanse Geslagsregister/South African Genealogies.

Any information will help.
Thank you  :)

Hi Lorraine & others
I am in the process tracing my paternal grandparents and have reached PGP2 level.
That is my great great grandmother.  She was Maria Magdalena Johanna Botes (born 22 November 1869 in Prince Albert and died on 18 February 1923 in Johannesburg).  I have her death notice and church baptism record.
I would like to source details of her parents Andries Stephanus Lourens Botes and Johanna Philippina Catharina Marias.  They are my PGP3.  Other than these details l have no record of birthdates, deaths and their respective parents.
Assuming they were part of the Botes family who took part in the Great Trek 1835-1838 they would have been children at the start of the trek or were born during the trek.
As I understand from this post, 16 families of Botes set out on the Great Trek.
Would appreciate any input that will assist me further.
Many thanks in anticipation
John
