The closest appears to be a marriage in 1770 but see response to other post:

1 Dec 1770
John Ellwood of Whitbar, Crosby Ravensworth husbandman
Annis Blenkarn Keasley, Dufton
bondsman: Joshua Ellwood of Whitbar husbandman

marriage to take place at Dufton
regards
Deborah

Oooo Gillian ..I'm just wondering if Deborah's found one of mine again.

I have

'Son William Ellwood was born 1769 and christened in Crosby Ravensworth on 17th June 1769 son of Joshua and Mary of Whitbar.'

Wonder if the bondsman is my Joshua who was married in 1758 to Mary Lunsen in Cumberland. ..... John maybe a brother?????

Hi Jean,

Yes it is a distinct possibility! I was also thinking alone the same lines. I am going to dig out my notes and check later. D'you think that John could be a brother of Joshua? The dates are not quite right for john being a son, unless of course there was also a father & son called Joshua. Will have to check my notes!!!

Regards,

Gillian

Hi Jean,

I know it's been a while since my last post!!

I have looked into this John Ellwood - Anne Blenkarn marriage. According to my notes, John is the son of Thomas Ellwood & Frances Watson of Dufton:

Thomas Elwood-6 (Edmund Elwood-5, Thomas Elwood-4, Thomas Elwolde-3, Edmund Elwold-2,
Edwarde Elwald-1). He was born 1698 in Dufton. Baptism on 12 Jan 1698 in Dufton. He died
1757 in Dufton.

Frances Watson is the daughter of Thomas Watson and Barbara Hutchinson. She was born 1700
in Kirkland. Baptism on 15 Dec 1700 in Kirkland.

Thomas Elwood and Frances Watson. They were married on 12 Nov 1722 in Dufton. They had 5
children.

i. Mary Elwood. She was born 1723 in Dufton. Baptism on 26 Sep 1723 in Dufton.
She married Thomas Ellwood. They were married on 05 Feb 1742 in Dufton. She
died 1789 in Alston.

ii. Isobell Elwood. She was born 1725 in Dufton. Baptism on 30 Dec 1725 in
Dufton. She married John Cooper. They were married on 25 Apr 1749 in Dufton
[4].

iii. Anne Elwood. She was born 1728 in Dufton. Baptism on 03 Oct 1728 in Dufton.
She married George Doten. They were married on 25 Jul 1752 in Dufton [4].

iv. Barbara Ellwood. She was born 1734 in Dufton. Baptism on 19 Feb 1734 in
Dufton. She died 1801 in Dufton [4]. Burial on 24 May 1801 in Dufton [4].

v. John Ellwood. He was born 1742 in Dufton. Baptism on 24 Jun 1742 in Dufton. He married Anne Blenkarn. They were married on 03 Dec 1770 in Dufton [4].

Not a Joshua brother in sight I'm afraid! Of course I cannot say for sure that this is the correct John and why he ended up in Crosby Ravensorth living with Joshua. There must be some connection between them as they were living in the same farm & Joshua was John's bondman for his marriage.

Have you any further info since 2009??!!

Regards,

Gillian

Hello again Gillian,

What a nice surprise after all this time ....... I didn't find any more about Joshua either... so I gave up.  I went as far back as I could with all my families then got as much information as I could, finally I had it all bound into a book of over 500 pages.  I updated it all when the 1911 census came out and have just sent it all off to be bound again into a second book.
I daren't  look now...in case I find something new and have to update again ...lol

It's nice to see you're still keeping up the good work .... once I get all my info in hard copy AGAIN!! I just might go back to researching and visit Crosby again, so thankyou for that Ellwood info....I'll hang on to it.
So nice to hear from you
Jean
