I am having trouble deciphering the Town / Parish name where my Patrick Crew/Crewe/Carew apparently lived prior to joining the 58th Reg of Foot at Ballinasloe, County Galway.
On the hand written 'Attestation for Regiments' the Parish he was born in looks like Louran/Louvan in the County of Tipperary. Also his discharge paper reads the same: Parish of (looks like) Lowran and in or near the Town of Louran.
I have searched and searched but that Parish or Town doesn't seem to exist.
Patrick Crew joined at the age of 17 in 1823 and discharged November 1845.
Then in 1849 came to New Zealand as a Fencible - still no clue with Parish or Town name on any New Zealand documents eg. Death Certificate and children's birth Certificates.
Can anybody offer any suggestions as to where I can search for any other records that will show his place of birth please.

Welcome to Rootschat. I've moved your post from Ireland Resources (which is for resources) to the Tipperary board. There is a townland called Loran in Bourney Parish but if you check www.thecore.com/seanruad and search for townland beginning with (change default setting to this) 'Lo' in Co. Tipperary you can see if there are any other possiblities.

A possible link to a slightly later Co. Tipperary Carew record :
from Griffiths Valuation
Name : William Carew
Place name : Toureen
Civil Parish : Killardry
County : Tipperary, South Riding
Date : 1851
any chance that the Louran could be a smudged Toureen ?

Thankyou for your suggestions. Shane, I'm quite sure the first letter is L which is identical to the first letter in the word Labourer. Fortunately the words Labourer and Tipperary are very close in proximity to Louran. Certainly Loran is a possibility.

Genfourm has a full section on Carew Tipperary, and Carew's from 1901 census that has the family from Rossbeg.

How about Lorrha.

How about Lorrha.
I think that is the most logical of the suggestions
1. Lorrha is only a dozen miles from Ballinasloe, and as close as Tipperary gets to Ballinasloe. It is also slightly nearer than Nenagh in Tipperary, which is the other place he would have gone to join the army - you did not walk further than you had to in those days.
2. There are 3 Carews in Griffiths in mid 19th cent living in Lorrha
3. You are out of luck with birth records if he was Protestant. Lorrha C of I only available from 1877, The RC records do exist from 1839 only, and earliest Patrick is born that year. I assume from the Christian name that he was RC.

Hi,
Your post Fencible from Tipperary re: Patrick Crew came up in my search and we are researching the same person. I am also stuck at the same spot - Louran and wondered did you make further progress?
Thanks

Hi. ??
Well this is a post out of the blue. Patrick Crew is my 2 x gr grandfather who arrived in NZ 18th Sept 1849. No, I haven't established the town in Co Tipperary of his birth, nor any parents. I lost my enthusiasm after a while, but oddly I have just brought out his folder again last week to have another look at it. So this post is well timed. How is Patrick related to you?

Hi Barbara,
This is great news, Patrick is also my 2 x great grandfather, great grandparents are Eliza Crew and Patrick Griffin.
Would love to know where you fit in and obviously as much as possible about the Crew descendants.
