Title: Tillstone Family
Post by: Tilly92 on Monday 27 July 09 18:23 BST (UK)
Currently researching my family history and have got as far back as Stephen Tillstone who lived in Lewes (1838-1901). Surely he should appear on the 41 and '51 census, therefore I could see who is father and mother were but can't. Also can't trace who Flora Francis Graimes parents were and who Kate Clayton from Rock Ferry in Cheshire was.

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Did he marry? His marriage cert will (hopefully) give name and occupation of his father and so help with earlier censuses

This could well be him

HO107 1643 456 9

St John Street , Lewes

Joseph Tilson 51 labourer bn  Dover Kent
Elizabeth 45 bn Westfield Sussex
Charles 25 labourer
Ann 19
Stephen 13 labourer

all 'children' bn Lewes

I see in 1861 Stephen ad wife (also Elizabeth) are in St John Street, and they call there eldest son Joseph.
But marriage cert will confirm if his dad WAS Joseph or not.

It was young wasn't it!

Is there anywhere that I can view the marriage certificate online without purchasing a paper copy?

Not online

You could look at the Parish register if you knew what Parish it was in.
They never seemed to stray far from St Johns Street, so likely to be whatever Lewes parish that was in (will be on the census page)

There is a Rootschatter (Chrisin1066land) who has access to several Lewes Parish registers, I cant remember offhand which or for what dates. I believe he is on hol at present, but hopefully will advise you if he has details of this one when he returns. You may like you send him a PM to ask.

Or if you can get to Lewes to the East Sussex record Office you can see it yourself.

Otherwise, it is a case of purchasing the certificate. More often that not the best way! (though in this case I would ask Chris first)

Hi Tily92

Back from Holiday at Last - Thanks lizdb

Back in the 1990,s I transcribed the baptisms for St John Sub Castro in Lewes and St John Street was definitely near that church - but there is only 1 Tillstone entry in their baptism registers

1798 Dec 25, Tillstone Frances, f, dau of Joseph & Frances

Sorry your Stephen is not there

Hi Chrisy and welcome to Rootschat,
Unfortunately Tilly92 has not been on for some years now and I see there is a note to say her emails are not working so she will not have had a notification of your post.
If you require more help with your tree then do start a fresh topic as I am sure there will be lots of people willing to assist.

Chris Tillstone, my Grandmother is Joyce Mabel Tillstone and she had a recorded address of 30 Spring Gardens as well.  Her father was William and mother Flora.  It looks as though Alfred Reginald a Tillstone was baptized in 1924, and died at the age of 3 in 1927.  There is likely more Alfred Tillstones.    Have you found any further connections with this information?  My family is heading to Lewes from Canada, perhaps we’ll learn more when we are there

Hi and Welcome,
Chrisy has not been on rootschat for a couple of years but if you make another post (just reply to this) then it will activate our private message system.  Click on the green letter icon under the user name and it will enable you to make contact provided the email address has not changed.
When you are in Lewes it would be worth a visit to the local record office at The Keep, just outside Brighton.  The Sussex family History Group have a library there too.
https://www.sfhg.org.uk/library.html   Do join if you are not a member as they have a lot of online records for members.
Enjoy your stay in Sussex.
