Title: Erasmus Cox, Evershot
Post by: Westy on Wednesday 05 August 09 15:33 BST (UK)
I am trying to find the death of my GGGGG Grandfather Erasmus Cox. He was born in Evershot, Dorset in 1793 and married Mary Ann Lyde at Fordington, Dorchester in 1813 and I am linked through their son James Cox b 1815. I can find his wife on the 1841 census and some of his children but not him and on the 1851 she is down as a widow. His last known child was born in 1825, Robert, but but on the 1841 a Eliza Cox is in the household so she may be a daughter or a grand daughter.  I have been looking for a death up 1841 but can't find him anywhere. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I can't get to the Dorset records office for a while
Cheers
Steve

This must be a differcult topic as no rootchatter has answered which is most unusual and I am still stumped !
I went to the Dorset Records Office yesterday and did a burial search of Evershot from 1825 to 1860 but nothing. I am presuming that he was still living in Evershot as his wife is on the 1841 living there and all his children were born there.
I have found a criminal record for him in 1816 with a sentence of 6 months (I think its him) so could he of been in prison or even transported and if so are these records available.
Any pointers would be very welcome
Cheers

Hi Chris
its great to hear from you !!!
I am from James and Jane's  daughter Mary Ann Cox born in 1839 she married John Hendey who are you from ?  The Hendey & Cox line is my favourite and I have a bit of info, I actually found James burial at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight late last year ( no headstone :-(  ) but unfortunately can't find Jane's and I have searched everywhere..... I had some contact with the Ventnor History society and even went to his last address, where he died, but the house has been pulled down. If you want any certs or info then I will be very happy to send them on to you and I would love to see your tree. I have a photograph of Mary Ann Cox as well which is my ab fab favourite picture.
Do you still live in the Dorset/hampshire area ?
PM me if you want my email

cheers
Steve

Hi both... Hope you're still interested in finding out more about this thread. I'm from the 'Erasmus Cox' line in Evershot too, but not from THIS particular Erasmus. He is my '3rd cousin 5x removed', but there is a link, and I have various bits of information (which I appreciate you may already know by now, 6 years after your last posts). Erasmus tended to be the Christian name of the eldest son in the line, but not always so, and Evershot and the West Dorset area is FULL of related Coxes!

This Erasmus served in the Dorset Militia from when he was 22 (1816) so if you need these references, let me know. I don't have his death details yet (but haven't really looked, to be fair). Erasmus's parents were, I believe, Erasmus Cox (b.1761 and Christened in St Peter's Dorchester, but was living in Evershot in 1780, according to Land Tax Returns) and Judith Robert (b. 1767 in Dorchester). They married in May 1787 in Dorchester Holy Trinity.

Erasmus's parents were Robert Cox (b.1738, Christened Oct 19th at Dorchester Holy Trinity) and Mary Tilly (b.1738) and they married in West Stafford, just east of Dorchester in 1759. Robert was the second son, the eldest, Erasmus, having died as an infant less than one year old.

Their parents were also Erasmus Cox (b.1717 in Evershot) and Elizabeth Lester (b.1719). I am descended directly from this Erasmus's brother, Henry. Their parents were also Erasmus Cox (b. about 1676) and Eleanor Russell (b. about 1676), who married in May 1698 in Cattistock.

Although this is the earliest Cox record I can verify, two further generations of Erasmus Coxes can be found in nearby Toller Porcorum from as early as 1593. They are undoubtedly linked, but I can't find precise written evidence of the link.

I hope this helps, and please get back in contact if you'd like to continue the discussion. You may, by now, have some information that I don't have, which would be useful to know.

Cheers

David
