Is it possible to view ship passenger lists from 1890 - 1900. I believe George Buchanan from Croftamie, Dumbartonshire sailed to, and returned from, South Africa during this period. I don't know which port he sailed from or returned to.
Does anyone know how I can verify this?

Ancestry has UK Incoming ships records from South Africa but these records don't always give much information eg 8 July 1903 a Mr G Buchanan, over 12 yrs, arrived in Southampton from Durban, South Africa on the Warner Castle. He was Scotch.
Other records give an age, occupation and the 'proposed address' in the United Kingdom.
If you can give more details about his age and occupation perhaps someone will be able to help.

Thank you excel - George Buchanan, a carpenter/joiner, was born in 1867 and his intended address in Scotland would have been a village called Croftamie.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Trish,
Thanks a million, this helps a lot. As an infant in this game I was not aware of such a database. Is there a similar one for entering the UK?
Many many thanks.

Hi
I also am looking for a family of Buchanan's that went over to South Africa.
The census for Scotland only goes to 1901 so I know it was after that, I know they were there by 1915. The family lived in Angus, Scotland and the parents owned a business in Durban, South Africa.
I am looking for Donald Buchanan & Alice Buchanan (parents),
with children/adults: John, William (wife: Emily), Alfred, Daniel, David, Alice & Gertrude
Is there anybody that can help

Hi
Can you give a birth year for Donald & occupation, the are 142 results for Donald with no birth year, so it will narrow it down a little.
Trish :)

Hi there,
Certainly, Donald was born 1839, his wife Alice 1856.
I would hope that the family is listed together as I'm pretty sure they all went over the same time.
Thank you and I'll wish you better luck than I've had ;)

Hi BCmom
See what you mean about luck :) :) If you can give me birth year of all you have listed and occupations of the males I am happy to spend some time looking. it's a little difficult with no birth years to work on.

Hi BCmom and Doun,
Here's a link for Donald and Alice Buchanan (nee Whitton) who moved to South Africa from Scotland. Donald's birth date seems to be 1844 not 1839 and you can trace their family further back through the website links. My ancestor is their daughter, Gertrude, so I'd be keen to hear if you have any other information.

Best wishes.

Hi aga.p
All the information I have shows that Donald was born in May of 1839. The 1851 census has him as 12 years, 1861 as 21 and his siblings Mary, John and Margaret are younger than him, then in 1871 he appears as 28, he's a boarder, his parents have passed and his age stays younger from then. So I tend to go with the first census rather than the later.
The link you attached for Donald has me confused on his death date, I have Sept. 25, 1919 as it was carved into his headstone. Could you tell me if you have his death certificate to verify the date you have.
Donald is my 3x great uncle, his older brother John is my 2x great grandfather. There is only one sibling that we can't trace after their mother's death, perhaps you have information on Catherine (Christy), she was born 1851. I didn't find any death certificate for her but it's been years since I've actually worked on the Buchanan tree.
I also heard that a few of Donald's family members made trips back to Benbecula so any information you have would be wonderful.
