Title: CRANE Family in Hertfordshire
Post by: Tantan on Tuesday 11 August 09 10:00 BST (UK)
Please do any of you guys have any knowledge of a Thomas Crane who evidently lived in the St Albans area in 1578. According to the IGI his daughter Sara was baptised at Saint Albans Abbey on 15/6/1578. Thomas Crane was married to a Dorothy ? and they later relocated to Newton Tony in Wiltshire where they bought the Manor before 1586, when his last daughter Eluzai was baptised. Ideally I am hoping to find his origins and evidence of marriage to Dorothy. Any ideas/advice welcomed.
Regards
Tantan

From The Visitations of Hertfordshire:

Dorothe was the dau of John Lockey of St Alban's and Joane, dau of William Marston of Napsbury nere St Alban's

The record shows that Dorothe (Lockey) married Tho's Crane but no further information given re dates.

She had two sisters Ellen and Elizabeth and a brother William.

The Lockey family was originally from York a few generations earlier.

In Herts Names Online there's a will of John Lockey, of St Albans, 1578.

Earlier, there's the will of Richard Lockey of St Albans in 1544, and of Agnes Lockey, widow of Richard, in 1549.

I don't know if this is relevant but there's a will of Robert Crane in St Albans (St Albans Wills 1471-1500, Herts Records Publications, edited by Susan Flood)

Robert Crane, will made 10 Sept 1487, probate 6 Oct 1487
4d to High Altar of St Andrew's chapel
Residue to wife Joan, executrix

Before that there's the will of Roger Crane, in 1456, of Watford
