My GG Grandfather Charles O'Brien born around 1834 was married twice, unfortunately nither of his marriage cert. records his fathers name. I am trying to go back another generation and have got stuck. I know he died 1903 in Irish Green St. Limavady. He was a butcher, cattle dealer and was wondering if there would have been any type of farming records that would give possible clues if he took over renting land perhaps that his father had farmed?
I would be grateful to hear any other ideas anyone has on how to get back another generation.

Hi,
This may be what you are looking for. It is taken from Emerald Ancestors and was probably recorded as part of qualifying for a pension in 1909.
1851 Census all lived in Irish Green St. Limavady
Charles O'Brien
Mary Ann O'Brien
Mary aged 26
William 23
James 20
Jane 17
Margaret 17
CHARLES 12
Rose Ann 10
There is also a will extract for Charles O'Brien on the PRONI will website.

Thank you Kingskerwell for this information.
I was looking at the names and ages of your information I do hold the same names except for Margaret but the age difference is quite a bit e.g. Charles ( son of Charles)in my family in 1909 would have been 41 your information gives Charles as 12. The problem with the O'Brien family is they all used the same names and also had big families, so you can understand how difficult it is to research this family.
I wonder are old pension details still held and if so where?
Thanks again Kingskerwell for taking the time.

Sorry I forgot to post the details of Charles O' Briens's marriges -
Charles O'Brien married Annie McGilligan, St Mary's RC Church, Limavady 1861
Charles O'Brien married Catherine McLaughlin of Claggan, in Magillian 1888
Between these 2 marriages Charles was the proud father of 17 children!

Found 3 of the children in IGI-
1. Sarah born 12 July 1866 Feeny district, Co. Londonderry
2. Charles born 23 Oct.1868 Co.Londonderry
3. George born 27 Sept.1870 Co. Londonderry
If there's no father listed on both marriage records (especially the 2nd which comes under civil registration) it's possible that Charles was illegitimate.

I have an interest in this family too :)
as Anna O'Brien [grand-daughter of Charles and dau of William who
md Magt Lyndsay] married Edward Forrest 18 May 1914 St Mary's Limavady.
1901 census [MIC/354//5/16]

In 1901 there were 5 O'Brien families in Irish Green Street alone - numbers 16 [Mary], 18 [James], 51 [William], 76 [William], 77 [Charles]
You can send me a PM if you wish.

Thank you Aghadowy that is certainly a possibility I noticed Charles second marriage was not recorded in the civil records. I know from the Griffith Valuation that 5 O'Brien's lived in Limavdy but of course this information does not connect them as siblings etc.
Thank again

Your gg grandfather charles was the the father of my grandfather james(jacob). I believe James was born in the first marriage to Annie Mc Gilligan. James moved to the U.S., the only one of his family to do so. He, of course, worked as a butcher. He married Elizabeth Madden of Limavady. The couple had four children: Charles(my father) born 1909; John, Mary and Elizabeth. All but John were born with severe hearing handicaps. I heard after Charles's death there was some family dissension about the will perhaps due to Charles's two marriages. This prompted my grandfather James to visit Ireland to work through the problem. James never again returned to Ireland and died in about 1934. I visited Limavady in 1992, taking my father Charles. Father diamond of St. Mary's showed us the baptismal records providing me with the information about James' parents, namely Charles and Annie. We visited the graveyard and saw all the O'Brien tombstones. I spoke briefly with Norman Hunter who bought the O'Brien butcher shop on Main st. It was a busy Saturday afternoon and he was unable to speak to me at any length that day. He said he knew all about the O'Briens and would speak to me on the forthcoming Monday. However, we had to leave the following day. My father Charles Aloysius O'Brien married Margaret Dowd and had 5 children. I am the oldest, born in 1933. We between us had 11 children and those children had a total of 16 children. I now have two great grandchildren. All live in the U.S. except my brother Charlie who lives in Germany 6 months of the year and in Florida the remainder. His two daughters also live in Germany. Hope to hear from you.

Thank you joe1933 for your most welcomed post. I have added your O'Brien information to my family tree which leads me to more questions such as what year did James go to USA and the year he got married?
My great grandfather Charles as you may guess was also a butcher and died at the young age of 37 which was 2 years after his father Charles died.
I have a copy of GG grandfather Charles will. Charles did leave all he had to his second wife Catherine McLaughlin I had no idea there was a problem.
I have also been to the old O'Brien tombstone on the Roemill Road it was very hard to read the old stones. I was told some old Brien's where buried in a vault but this is all probably legend.
Great to hear from you please keep in touch

Gortinanima,
I'm very interested in the O'Briens of Limavady. I'm trying to construct a time line to see a relationship with Charles O'Brien and my great-grandfather, Thomas O'Brien of Irish Green Street, Limavady.

Any dates for your Thomas?

Just picked up this email chain and very interested to see that the O'Briens of Limavady were so prolific. I too am an O'Brien and my own grandfather was born in Pilots Row in Derry with his father originating from Limavady.Im also led to believe that a branch of the O'briens may have originated in Letterkenny. Do you have any information on this sid branch.
many thanks

Hello. T.
I don't know about the Letterkenny connection, but I'm from Derry, as was my grandfather, Patrick Quigley, and great grandfather, Matthew Quigley. They lived in Derry, but in St. Columb's Wells, according to the census of 1901. Before that Matthew lived in Glasgow, Scotland. He may have got there from Donegal; I don't know. We have many Quigley relatives still in Scotland, and, as you know, many in Limavady.
I'd love to see if we are connected

Dear P
thanks for the reply. I'm currently travelling so when I get back will dig out the records. I have a house in Culmore but flit between Derry, England and warmer climes. Originally raised in Leenan Gardens many moons ago.
good to hear from you.

Wonderful to get an answer, even if we aren't related. I live in Montreal; get home to Derry occasionally. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me with information about my G.Grandmother Bridget O'Brien (1869-1906)
1890 Bridget married my G.Grandfather Henry Devenny (1866-1942 from Gortnarney, Balteagh, Drumsurn), at St Patricks, Dungiven Parish. Witnesses William McAteer and Ellen Crilly.
Census 1901 they resided in Lislane, Balteagh
Henery Devennie 33yo Agricultural Labourer, Bridget 32yo, William 9yo, Henery 8yo (my grandfather), Marry 6yo, Matilda 4yo, John 1yo. Census spellings !!!!!
After Bridget died (1906), Henry married Mary Sharkey (1869-) from Donegal in 1908, St Matthew's, Dungiven. Witnesses Henry Mullan and Rachel Douglas.
1911 Census they resided Terrydremont South
Henry Devenny, Mary 40yo, William, Henry, John 12yo, Francis 6yo.
I think my GG Grandfather was John Devenny/Devine/Diveny (1831-1902) from Cloughan, Balteagh. married to Anne Jane McTeer/McAteer/McTyre.
Can anyone help me go back further with O'Brien, Devenny, McAteer families from this area.
Thanks.
G
