My partner's grandfather arrived in Liverpool from India (possibly Karachi) sometime between 1911 and 1915. Can anyone provide a link that I can check passenger names?
Thanks,
Simon

Hi Simon
Here is a link from the NA - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=106
I don't know if anything is available online.
UPDATE: if you look in Arrivals, 1878-1960 it says they are available on Ancestry.

Hi Miriam,
Thanks very much for the offer. He was Mohamddin Peterson born in 1894 in India. His parents were Gulam and Susie. I think he arrived in Liverpool, possibly from Karachi although it could have been another Indian port, between 1911 and 1915.
Thanks,
Simon

There is the following entry but it's Liverpool to NY: -
Name: Mohamddin Peterson
Arrival Date: 16 Feb 1940
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1891
Age: 49
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Indian (Native American)
Ship Name: Mosdale
Search Ship Database: Search the Mosdale in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Looks like there is a real story to this - passenger list states that this is the crew rescued after being shipwrecked from another vessel the Sea Rambler.
Best wishes
Miriam

Further to last post
Mohamddin Peterson is aged 49 - born in India - and described as a Fireman who was rescued from the SS Sea Rambler Feb 10 1940

Hi Simon
If the mariner in 1940 is him, he may have been part of the crew when he first arrived in the UK. He will not therefore be on a passenger list. If you find his mariner's record it may go back as far as 1911-1916.

Hi Thank you for this link.
It sounds great. I'm going to register later, but I can't see any shipping lists. Will they open up once I've registered please?
Thank you again.

Hi Simon
Could he have been on a troop ship and would they still be listed?
I've actually got a few crew who are on passenger lists but there must be loads of other occasions when they aren't.
What I can't find are ships lists for troops during or outside the war, in fact not even mt Grandma going out to get married via a troopship. I just wondered with it being India. They were married in Bombay.

I've asked military sources and they say his regiment and service number means that he joined up (Liverpool Regiment) in England and didn't serve abroad until at least January 1916. So it sound like he was already in England (Liverpool). Whether his parents Gulam and Susie were with him I don't know. And whether he had any siblings I don't know.

I amlooking for any record of my greatgrandfather leaving Ireland. He is not on the Ireland 1901 census but I have found his name Nicholas Smyth on Prison records in Leicester in 1901. How could I check any lrecords of him leaving Ireland prior to this? Would be grateful for any help.
-
Prior to the partition of Ireland, what is now the republic was just part of the UK. Crossing would leave as many official records as, say, catching a train from London to Glasgow today.
The Criminal Registers on Ancestry only go up to 1892, and he does not appear there, so he must have been a recent arrival in the prison.
There is no sign of him in the 1891 census, so no chance of getting a place of birth better than "Ireland". I can't find him in 1911 either.
However, most of the people in custody there seem to be from the local area, with a smattering of seafarers, so it's likely he was living in Leicestershire (or possibly one of the surrounding counties) when arrested.

Thankyou for your reply, it is very helpful. I know he was born in Blackrock, Co. Louth, Ireland. I can find his parents still living in Blackrock ( Ireland 1901 Census)but Nicholas is not living there. I have searched the Ireland Census 1901 but can't find him. I am mystified.
Thankyou once again for taking your time to do the searches.
Kind Regards,
Emma
