Title: Matthews Fairground Family.
Post by: nelwild on Monday 21 September 09 13:49 BST (UK)
Hello,

I believe the Matthews im searching for are almost certainly from the Matthews fairground family.I have a book called Fairfield Folk which gives a lot of info on some of the family members, and the family names and locations make it seem beyond a coincidence to me.

Is there anyone with a more detailed knowledge of their family tree who might be able to help me make a connection,

Many thanks,Nel.

I have been doing the Matthews family tree for 12 years now and have over 2000 people on it.

Let me know what info you want and I will let you know the answers  ;D

Does anyone have any info on James Matthews, Travelling Photographer married to Charlotte Ridley?  Ridley family were circus showmen (John & Selina Ridley)  I have info on Ridley family but very little on Matthews.  I know my Matthews family were not originally fairground people and are not related to the Matthews family in Fairfield Folk. James Matthews (son of James Matthews) originated from London, possibly Lambeth or Bethnal Green and he died in Bristol in 1916.  I am unable to find the mother of James or his birth certificate.  Any help much appreciated

Hello,
I’m trying to do some research on my mates family.
The little they know is that their grandmother Ada Turner’ (born Abt 1906) Granfather was a Fairground Matthews.
This is what they gave me.
Ada 1906-1986 siblings Henry , Maggie ( lived in Enfield Wembley), Mary and sister(cue dodgy spelling done phonetically ) payshee . Their grandfather was surname Matthews.
Not much to go but does it ring a bell with anyone?
Cheers.
B

The Index in Frances Brown's recent book "Fairground Destiny" mentions lots of Matthews:

Alice, Amy (nee Davies), Amy (see Amy Rowland), Caroline, Bernard, Edward, Flash Ria, Honora (nee Bushnell or Smith), James, Chewbacca, Jemmy, Jimmy, Job, Harelip, Joe, John, John Robert, Lydia (nee Reynolds), Mary Ann, Matilda, Polly (nee Bushnell or Smith), Redshirt, Reuben and Tommy

Hope this is of help to someone.
