Title: COMPLETED NSW place of death name, need help with location.District of Carcoar.
Post by: jojodyso on Tuesday 22 September 09 06:54 BST (UK)
HI
I have a death certificate from 1884 and the place of death is noted as Rising Sun, Cowra Road, District of Carcoar NSW. He is buried at Lyndhurst so he obviously died between Cowra and Carcoar, but I am can't find any place called the rising sun or cowra road, if anyone can help me with a map or where or what the rising sun is located would be greatly appreciated.
I assume it to be a name of a property, but I don't know where to find an old map of the Carcoar/Cowra region.
Thanks and Cheers
Joanna

Hi Joanna  :)

I found the following website which says the Rising Sun is/was a pub in Carcoar:

(scroll down to find Rising Sun on the alphabetical list).

I suppose he might have been staying there (it probably had rooms to rent as well as being a pub) and become ill, or that he was simply passing through/nearby and was taken to the pub when he fell ill or had an accident.  What was the cause of death?

Hi Joanna,

I grew up in that general area, and from my recollections, the Cowra Road was the old name for what is now the Mid Western Highway from Bathurst to Cowra.   I have access to the 1870 and 1878 electoral roll for the district, so can I help you further?  I'm a descendant of the Marsh and Marshall families from that district.

Cheers,  JM

The cause of death was cerebral Haemorrhage and Hemiplegia and the length of illness is listed as nine days, so he may have been staying there.

This is a link to old maps, it can take a bit of getting used to, but I've just checked the link, and I can find maps for Cowra, Blayney and Lyndhurst in 1884.  These are all out in that district, from memory Kings Plains is nearer Bathurst than Cowra.

you need to modify your posting, scammers issues re your email address.  Do it straight away please,  I am a descendant of Thomas Henry Marsh, but I have various bits and pieces on the rest of his siblings and his forebears.  Yes, umm, Ben Hall was a good man, victim of circumstances,  buried in same cemetery as some of my rellies.

HI
I was born in Cowra but left when very young, I am descended from the Pullin, Day and Mackie families from Carcoar and Cowra. If you can find any of these names in the electoral roll it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thought I  might throw a red herring in here  or not!!!

Could Rising Sun  also be the name of a property in  the area?

You  could hope for an obituary from  the local newspaper to give you a bit more?

Hello  there craigresides  and welcome to rootschat
I see you are interested in Busharanges and NSW Police... can I  ask if you are also related to any police from  that period?

Jenn's spot on about the possibility of a property being named Rising Sun.   I can't help further on the electoral rolls, the addresses I have cited are the full addresses from those early rolls.

There's a very active family history group based in Bathurst, and of course they have holdings from other FHS too.  Perhaps it would be worthwhile for Joanna to make enquiries there, as well as at Cowra.

I seem to have mis-placed my link for Cowra, but Bathurst is http://bathurstfhg.asn.au/index.shtml

Thanks JM,

I live at Newbridge, about 10 km north of Neville. I'm doing some research into the life of the bushranger John Vane.

Will make contact after my next post.

Hi Jenn,

No - I'm not related to any police from that period, that I'm aware of anyway. But I've made great contacts from descendants of some of the police in the story that I'm researching - mainly Bathurst - Goulburn. Police such as Morisset & Grainger and other 'characters' in the story.

Are you searching for police?

Cheers,

Craig

Wouldn't be this story?

http://www.thelegendofbenhall.com/

3 films 1 in December ( this month) and one on John Vane and one on Frank Gardiner. Using historical newspaper accounts and the words from those accounts.

( hope this is ok)
