On the Papers Past website the Hawkes Bay Herald records an application for bankruptcy from Margaret Morton a hotelkeeper in September of 1868. In October an advert appears for a meeting of creditors for her estate. It would seem therefore that she died Sept/Oct 1868 in Napier. Suggest you take a look.

A reappraisal is required. In the HB Herald on 31 Oct 1868 two adverts appear side by side. One from Mrs Morton late of the Napier Hotel informing the public that she has opened a boarding House. The second is an estate notice in respect of Margaret Morton. I now believe we have two women of the same name both making the newspaper columns at the same time. One has died but yours' lives on, even though she is bankrupt. Back to square one.

Hi Alan

I looked earlier today at this query and came up with much the same information as you have found.

These notices > PapersPast - "Hawkes Bay Herald" - 31 October 1868 - P2 Advertisements - Column 1 >   ... I believe, all relate to the same Margaret MORTON.

"The second is an estate notice in respect of Margaret MORTON".

Yes it is   .... BUT it is in reference to the "Bankrupt Estate of Margaret MORTON".

In the first notice in the column, you will read that "a Henry Edwin WEBB of Napier, was elected as the Trustee of the Bankrupt (namely, Margaret MORTON) .... ".

The second notice, relates to Mr. H. E. WEBB (acting in his capacity as Trustee of the Bankrupt) ... calling for debts due in the (Bankrupt) Estate of Margaret MORTON.

Yes that is how I read the notice
that she had gone bankrupt at hotel, but now had boarding house
Have thought about chance that she re married but could not find any in BDM that would fit
have more info on birth date now she was born in Leith Scotland in 1826
thank you with all the help with this

Hi plmorton

Hmm ... yes, I've explored all sorts of options for your Margaret MORTON  ... to no avail sadly.     (I've run numerous spelling variations through the death index ... including Moreton, Mawton ... Norton ... etc. etc.   And she doesn't appear to be there under her maiden name or variants of ?).

SO  ... next thing to do, would be to try Napier Cemeteries.
(I see that her husband is buried at "Napier Old" - she may well be there - I couldn't find a database for that cemetery though, that went beyond about 1870. ???)

The Napier City Council website has a link for "genealogical enquiries"  relating to cemeteries ... and they provide an excellent service.

I'm satisfied that Margaret didn't "officially" re-marry.
There is though always the possibility that she changed her surname (perhaps to escape creditors  ... or she was in another relationship.) ???

Hi again Peter

Was just looking at one of your other threads where someone had posted birth info. for Margaret and Henry's children.

I note their youngest daughter Margaret, was born in December 1858   ... and, (also found on IGI), that she married John OLD in September 1878 ... making her 19 years of age at that time.

Because she was under 21 years, she was classified as a "minor" and thus, required the permission of a parent or guardian, to marry.    AND ...  maybe her mother (Margaret MORTON) was still around, to give consent. ??   This information would be recorded on the Intention to Marry Notice (ITM).

To find that information, you could make a request on this board, for a look-up of the ITM - held at Archives NZ in Wellington.
(See the Resources section on this board if you want further info on ITM's).

Anything's worth a try.   :D

A geni tree suggests she died 1903 aged 77 in New Zealand, doesn't seem to match bdms with her daughter Margaret Old (need Morton) passing August 2, 1908 (aged 50)
New Plymouth, New Plymouth District, Taranaki, New Zealand.
