Can someone tell me the meaning of this please? I just recived a marriage certificate and the grooms job is down as colliery sinker ???

It means he was involved in the sinking of the shafts for coal mines.

Sorry can you simplify it a bit. Do you mean like he helped dig the shafts down deeper?

Every new underground coal mine has to have shafts excavated down to the seams so they could extract the coal. The only exceptions were drift mines where a tunnel was driven into a hillside to get at the coal. Shaft Sinkers were a special breed who went from colliery to colliery to sink shafts.

My husband, son's and father-in-law are/were dyspraxic feeling at their best when shovelling or banging metal (gross shoulder movements) as well as miners the family has included grave diggers and steam train stokers. My father in law was a boilermaker/ tinsmith, his father a miner and his a stoker (all Pontins). My husband is an archaeologist - posh shovelling!
