Is anyone researching the family of Mr Nicholson who sailed (unsuccessfully!) to New Zealand in 1878?
He may have managed to get there eventually.
I would be interested to hear from you asI may have info to give to you.

Hi Dawn,
The Mr. Nicholson I have was also from Shetland. He "tried " to leave for New Zealand on the 12th of September 1878 on the “Canterbury” from Glasgow.
He may have made it another time but he is obviously not your Mr Nicholson!
Sorry

Hi O
My partner has recently started researching his Nicholson ancestors and has hit a brick wall. I saw your post from 2009 and wondered if there could be a connection. The Nicholson he is looking for had children and died in NZ in 1933 at the age of 73.
Could this be the Nicholson you have info for?

Folks, I also have a Shetland Nicolson brick wall. Oliver (Olla) Nicolson b. 1828, Tronaster, Delting son of William Nicolson & Agnes Halcrow, both Delting.
The family are at Skae, Northmavine in 1841 & 1851, he became a merchant seaman.

My info will not help any family search as I have no details of the man.
I only have a snippet of info of a Nicholson who made an unsuccessful attempt to get to NZ in 1878.
He may have had another go later on, I do not know.
The info is from a ship record and the kind of thing handed down through family folklore to ancestors.

I have a Shetland ancestor - James John Turnbull Nicolson Born Orkney Islands Scotland 1837 Died Thames NZ 1906 (my GGG Grandfather) ... (his father was John Nicolson Born 1800 & mother Grizel Williamson Born 1790) he married Christina Tait Born 1830 Died 4 July 1919 Pio Pio NZ ... (and their daughter Grace Catherine Tait Nicolson Born 1871 Lunnasting, Shetland Islands - married my GG Grandfather John Richard Scott on 22 Dec 1896 - NZ) Does that make sense to anyone, hope so!
