This one seems to have crept in under the radar................

I think we all suspected that they were behind schedule with the 1901 Census but, bless their hearts, they will have the additional transcriptions online before the end of the year.
Aren't they the best?
Dara.

Aren't they the best?
Indeed. Despite the frustrating delays and the host of indexing errors, it's still worth acknowledging that this is a terrific facility. The image quality is second to none.

It has defiantly been worth the wait for the 1911, just hope the 1901 is as good. Fingers crossed ::)

The new site is up.
It's pretty good but there are still some coding errors. But you can do interesting statistical searches now - like how many unmarried head of households were women, etc.
I also looked at some of the transcription errors I previously reported and only one is fixed. :(

You have to hand it to them, they know how to put the british 1911 to shame.

Hi Rootschatters,
Anyone got any inside info on when the 1901 will go online and in what county order?
I have no patience!
Thanks

Just keep checking National Archives website under Future Plans- today's message says 'between early and mid-2010.'

I was at a seminar at the National Library in Dublin yesterday when Cartriona Crowe of the National Archives gave the latest update on the digitisation of the 1901 census.
It seems there have been some problems (no surprises, there!) but the records will go online before middle of June and they will be released in one fell swoop, not in tranches as the 1911, and with full search facilities under all fields. However, in order to meet that schedule, the records will be released without a full check having been performed. So we should expect more initial errors and omissions than the 1911 had.
In other words, the 'early' 2010 of the original estimate of release was optimistic. The 'mid' 2010 might just be met!

Thanks for the up date.

thanks keeping us up to date

Thanks for that.
Was anything mentioned about
(a) checking after the 1901 goes on line or
(b) anything about amendments to the 1911 as a result of user feedback?

She mentioned that the present problem with checking is the shedding of staff at the NAI. This isn't likely to get any better any time soon. So they take the view that if they waited to release the records in 'perfect' state, it would never be launched. A similar view prevailed with the 1911 but it seems that release had had at least some level of inspection prior to launch. This time there won't be any.
Amendments after launch, as with the 1911, will be ongoing but dictated by staff resources.
Reading between the lines (and very much my interpretation of what she said), all staff resources are currently needed to get the 1901 online before June. After that, those slim resources will deal with amendments and omissions for both 1901 and 1911.

Thanks again Rose

Thanks for the latest update. The lack of some level of checking is worrying (especially as 1901 was supposed to be more difficult to read than 1911). With lots of multiple searches using first name/age or townland, etc. it's usually possible to find most people but I know that quite a few places are wrong in 1911 and there's no way to report errors on the form at present.

Thanks for the update Rose.
Good to know when it will be online - save me checking everyday and being disappointed that its not there.

Ditto MaggieTag, June isn't that far away, the lack of checking does seem a little worrying, but if you can search with wild cards then hopefully that will aid finding the right family :)
I think 1901 is the last chance I have at finding my Irish Roots, so I hope I will be able to find who I am looking for !
It is also a shame about the shedding of staff at NAI.
Does anybody know if RIC records will be going online any time soon ?
The National Archives in the UK has the records out for licensing:

Latest update
Future plans
All thirty-two counties for 1911 are now available on this site.
1901 Census material, with all data transcribed, will be launched before the end of June 2010. It will be launched all at once rather than in tranches as with 1911.
-
Thanks for that - do hope the site won't crash thru being deluged with searches!

Can't wait :) then if/when I find the entry I need I can book my next visit to Ireland :)

But that is really saying the same thing they've been saying since
last December, all they've removed is the bit that said between early
and mid 2010. :)
p.s.Oh and now I see where they will be adding missing townlands from the 1911 census, may be good for some, anyone know which townlands they are.

Exactly. Let's hope they stick to that and do get it on by June. In the meantime, please do not use this thread for posts that belong on TOT board. Thank you, aghadowey (Moderator)
Added- unfortunately I've had to lock this topic since someone doesn't seem to understand silly posts don't belong here. If there's any more news on the 1901 census I'll post it here.
