Title: Thomas CRAIKE - - - - - - COMPLETED
Post by: inept on Wednesday 06 January 10 14:19 GMT (UK)
Thomas CRAIKE - Birth and Marriage

We are having difficulty establishing the birth, marriage date and parentage of Thomas.

We believe his son Thomas emigrated from Sprouston, Roxburghshire (Scotland) to Australia via New Zealand prior to the 1861 census, arriving in Victoria in June 1862.

Prior to moving to Scotland, we believe Thomas (senior) married Margaret MacDougal (b 1804/1805 in Kelso, Roxburghshire) and baptized three children (Rachel Mary, Frances and William) at St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey in 1825, 1827 & 1831.  Further births of Thomas, Helen, Charles occurred in Southwark/London, and a second William was born in Scotland.

In both the 1851 and 1861 (Scotland) Census Thomas stated he was born in England, and was a farmer.

From both census dates, we believe he was born in 1793.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Sincere thanks for all that new material, Ian C.  You've done some painstaking research there.  Plus great lateral thinking, finding the CRASKE record.  We're very grateful.

You won't be aware of this, Ian, but for my uncle's (middle name Craike) sake, we're chasing what he swears are his Scottish ancestors.  Perhaps it's only a 50/50 shandy of English/Scottish blood!

And you're not butting in, Cando.  Your Roxborough material ties in nicely.  I think it's likely that Margaret MacDougal's parents are William MacDougal and Frances Gibb of Roxborough.  Their names have been bestowed on two of Tom and Marg's progeny.  James Gibb was a witness to the Thomas/Margaret union.  Possibly he's a brother-in-law or uncle?

Ian C, excuse my naivety (or ineptness), but what is the expansion of otp, aside from on-the-prowl?  Does yes and no in the census record refer to where they were born?

Now I'll get to work on all your tips, and see how it all fits together.

Once again, many thanks.

inept

PS  I see that while I've been penning this, Ian, you've found more gems!  Dad being a potato merchant is consistent with son Tom being a farmer.

With Rachel, Frances and Helen CRAIKE all being with Mary GIBBS and listed as niece, the James GIBB witness makes sense, with Margaret's mother being a GIBB. The CRAIKE son named James died.

otp - of this parish
Yes in 1841 means born in county and No means NOT born in county

Thanks Ian

It all seemed to fit in beautifully.

I'm exceedingly grateful for your excellent research, and  the generous expenditure of your time!

I've had a hunt for Craike people further up the tree, but have had no luck so far.

I have found a Thomas MacDougall and Ann Ingles who seem to be appropriate parents for William, c 8 Jun 1777 [IGI Batch C117972]

Thanks again
