Title: Need Advice on connecting HEDGES brothers #2
Post by: Nennefer on Thursday 27 November 08 20:37 GMT (UK)

Well Jenny iv'e had no luck with those ???

These families are very good at hiding ;D ;D

       Sue

They certainly are Sue I can't find them either. Elusive little folk. Probably hiding up some lane where no one would find them. Certainly not an Enumerator doing a census.
thanks for trying to find them though, it's always good to know it's not just me being a dummy and just missing them because I don't know what I'm looking at. Just trying to think what else to try that might further my search.

Just clearing up a few things...

Edit: is she the Sarah Ann Eastwood christened on 24 February 1850 in Hadlow, Kent and daughter of James Eastwood and and Sarah?

Where did you find this one James It seems a very likely candidate as a relative as the area is right, but where would she fit.

Bexley was in the Dartford Registration District.

There's a lot of Eastwoods in the Dartford R.D. too!

Over at the IGI at Family Search.

I couldn't find any others who were children of James and Sarah though.

There are six christenings for Eastwoods in Hadlow, though.

Post by: James R. Yeowell on Thursday 27 November 08 20:51 GMT (UK)
Here's the six Eastwoods of Hadlow:

1. Frances Eastwood, chr. 26 May 1839, daughter of George Eastwood and Phoebe
2. Thomas Eastwood, chr. 22 January 1843, daughter of Thomas Eastwood and Elvey (ooh, that's a travellers name!)
3. Ann Eastwood, chr. 28 December 1845, daughter of Richard Eastwood and Elizabeth
4. Caroline Eastwood, chr. 26 April 1846. daughter of John Eastwood and Harriet
5. Jane Eastwood, chr. 31 May 1846, daughter of George Eastwood and Phoebe
6. Sarah Ann Eastwood, chr. 31 May 1850, daughter of James Eastwood and Sarah

The mind boggles, only George and Phoebe are repeasted as parents!

However, both Elvey/Alvey and Phoebe are names we're familiar with in the travelling families we've been tracing.

Also:

Elvy Eastwood, chr. 30 May 1841, Bexley, Kent, daughter of Thomas Eastwood and Elvey
George Eastwood, chr. 30 July 1837, Stone By Dartford, Kent, son of John Eastwood and Harriett
Mark Eastwood, chr. 13 Aug 1843, St. James, Grain, Kent, son of John Eastwood and Harriett

perhaps something will come to light that will enable us to make a connection at some point. At the moment I'm a bit lost for what to try next.

I was wondering about something,  but don't think I know how to go about finding out more. I will throw it into the mix and see what happens.
I am concerned about the age spread of the 4 brothers, thinking there may be more to fill the gaps.
Thomas 1801
James 1815
William 1816
Job 1821

Now there was a Joseph Hedges b c1821 mentioned in 1841 Census with my suspected  Father of the 4 brothers William HEDGES b c 1776 both in Maidstone prison. Would it be worth looking for Joseph HEDGES in Maidstone and surrounding areas in case he is another brother.
I suspect he may be Job Hedges b 1821 but I could be wrong is it worth the hunt do you think?

Also when hunting through cityark last night I found this Marriage

All Saints Parish church Frindsbury
1892 April 30
John Richard HEDGES Age 25  Occupation ???man  Living Frindsbury Father Alfred HEDGES Labourer
Elanor Elizabeth FORDHAM Age 24          Living Frindsbury Father Charles Richard FORDHAM Labourer

Witness Alfred James BONNEY          Witness Minnie Soft or Loft

I have an Alfred HEDGES living in this area who had a son Alfred but don't have enough to connect them. I haven't found any thing on the Census so far. Anyone want a try at it.

I'm sure you have this:

Eden Brewer, born 18 October 1802, chr. 24 October 1802, Crawley, Sussex, daughter of John Brewer and Elizabeth.
Eden Brewer married Thomas Hedges on 1 October 1820, Hadlow, Kent.

Just thought I'd mention this.

This above has to be Eden wife of Thomas as I don't think we had this entry for Sampson son of Thomas and Eden.
It looks like Eden was drawn back to her birth place to have Sampson Christened.

Sampson HEDGES
Christening
11 March 1845 Crawley  Sussex
Father Thomas HEDGES
Mother EDY

Note too that Jeramiah HEDGES b 1849 Sussex, son of Job HEDGES b.1821 and Rosanna Dawes b 1818 Cuckfield Sussex

Crawley is only 7 miles from Cuckfield.

Thanks for that James. I'm not sure Mary died though perhaps divorced as I can find no suitable death registration and on his second marriage he didn't say widower but bachelor.

Hi all
YIPPEE ;D ;D ;D
I have had a certificate arrive ;D
Just to refresh memories it is for the Baby Thomas HEDGES who died in East Malling in 1854 of Cholera Father presant at death James HEDGES.

His Birth Certificate States....
Place                                 Name     Sex     Father         Mother                         Fathers Occ
1853 Bocking Essex   Thomas  Boy      James         Eliza HEDGES               Hawker
9th March 1853                                          HEDGES      formerly JENNINGS
by the side of
Shallow Road
Panfield

Residence of Informant James HEDGES  is Bernet Hertfordshire.
He must have given this as his permanant place of abode. Might be interesting to search this area.
And Eliza is a JENNINGS Wooohooo.
And William and Susan that died during the same time at the same place sojourning in East Malling must be the Parents of James and therefore the parents of all the brothers. Is this enough proof I ask myself. I think is is for me. Would it be for you?

Sorry Sue I missed reading this bit, silly me ::)

I'm going to do a general scan of 1851 for William1816 and Thomas 1801 as cant find them for 1851,
but at some point it would be good to see if any other children were born to James and Eliza in Hertfordshire. Just a thought that they may have spent some time there.

That's all the children I can find.  That marriage of a William Hedges is also looking good.

It also seems they remained local to St. Albans, rather than scout around the south of England.  We know William Hedges was a Hawker though, thanks to the 1851 census entry.

Hi everyone

Jenny I am so pleased for you!!!!! That death cert certainly helps ...with the 2 HEDGES brothers marrying 2 JENNINGS sisters ..... :D :D Also that James Hedges gives place of Residence as HERTS

Just wanted to remind you of The Jennings mother who was also born HERTS

(also we also came to the conclusion that Elias eastwood = Harriet JENNINGS may have changed his name to John)

This is from a couple of pages back:

Following up on John and Harriet Eastwood ...this is them in 1851

John Eastwood head mar 35 Hawker of mats and Beehives b Sussex, 5 Ashes
Harriet wife 35 b Islington = JENNINGS
George son 14 b Kent ??
John son 11 b Frindsted
Mark son 8 b Hoo
Caroline dau 5 b Hadlow

Blimey ... on the page prior and living next to them

Gloucester Place
Joseph JENNINGS head mar 45 rat catcher b ISLINGTON (Born same place as Eliza, Fanny and Harriet Jennings)

1901 census has:

Alfred Hedges   23   St Albans Herts   London       Brush Maker

Alfred Hedges   44   Hertford St Albans   Yorkshire   Skipton   Traveller For ...

Mostly likely father and son.

Deb, that would be Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire.

I know geography isn't my strong point and I am at risk of sounding really stupid but I have to ask Is Islington in Herts?  :(

There also seems to be another Hedges family of St. Albans that have children called James and Alfred as well.

Thomas Hedges and Sarah, had issue:

1. Elizi. Hedges, chr. 22 Apr. 1827, St. Peter, St. Albans
2. Henry Hedges, chr. 28 Sep. 1828, St. Peter, St. Albans
3. Emma Hedges, chr. 28 Nov. 1830, St. Peter, St. Albans
4. James Hedges, chr. 14 Apr. 1833, St. Peter, St. Albans
5. Joseph Hedges, chr. 4 Oct. 1835, St. Peter, St. Albans
6. Alfred Hedges, chr. 2 Oct. 1842, St. Peter, St. Albans
7. Ellen Hedges, chr. 2 Oct. 1842, St. Peter, St. Albans

Now they could be related to the other Hedges of St. Albans... we need to find them on the census and see if they are travellers.

Islington is in London.

If you've ever been to the old Family Records Centre (before it went to Kew), then that is roughly where Islington is (next door to Clerkenwell).

So hardly a rural area.  Perhaps they fell on hard times or something?  Most of the travellers we've come across have been living in caravans near hamlets and villages, no in the centre of London.

Not sure if that's the right family.

Joseph Jennings married Lydia Loud on 1 January 1829 at St. Alphage, Greenwich, Kent.

Unless he married Mary Ann as his second wife, of course.

His father was named Joshua Jennings and his mother was Sarah.

Thank you James
I must of missed the posts explaining that. :o Oops.
Sometimes things get so jumbled in my head I can't follow. Thats Why I need help  ;D
Can I ask where you found the Marriage details and got his Fathers name from.
Once I have the source I can log it all in, saves me covering the same ground.  ;D

Yes, that looks like them.

Children of Joseph Jennings and Lydia Loud:

1. Joseph Jennings, b. about 1832, Enfield, Middlesex
2. Sarah Jennings, b. about 1835
3. John Jennings, b. about 1835
4. Edward Jennings, b. about 1837, Deptford, Kent
5. William Jennings, b. about 1842, Deptford, Kent
6. Charles Jennings, b. about 1849, Stepney, London

I believe we've got an 1851 census entry for them too, which is where I got the birth details for Joseph, Edward, William and Charles from.  It's probably on this thread somewhere.

As for the marriage, I found it on the IGI over at Family Search.

Father's name came from the christening of Eliza Jennings (who married James Hedges) on 28 February 1816 at Upper Street Independent, Islington, London.  That's also from the IGI.

Plus we know the mother is named Sarah, because of another census entry.

just a thought about this

Eliza Jennings  d/o Josh Jennings and Sarah
born 16 DEC 1815

It would also make sense of the sons name Joseph. There is also an Elizabeth-Possibly Eliza and a Joseph but no Harriet and Frances. I know they are all christened in Herts and our family are born Islington :(. Perhaps not, grasping at straws.

re Children of Elias Hedges and Alice Reynolds

all of these on same page for marriage
June q 1892 Medway Kent
Charlotte Hedges
Henry Hedges...could he be s/o Elias and Alice?
George Broom
Rose Ann Carter

can't see Henry and Rose Ann on the 1901

deb

This Henry HEDGES Married Rose Ann Carter, Is Henry 1871 the son of William HEDGES 1832 and Eliza Clark 1834.

oooooo Jenny

okay  .....
Charlotte Hedges is d/o Elias Hedges and Alice Reynolds
Elias Hedges is the s/o James Hedges and Eliza (Jennings)....... Janice's line

Henry Hedges is the s/o William Hedges and Eliza Clark
William Hedges is s/o Your William Hedges and Fanny Jennings...... Jenny's line

so we have two cousins marrying same quarter in the same area .... I wonder if it could possibly be the same day!!!!!!!!!

is this the link we have been looking for?

deb :)

Here we have an Error.
I think we  have assumed that Charlotte HEDGES is the daughter of Elias Hedges and Alice Reynolds.
When in actual fact there are 2 both born in 1874 Williamand Eliza also had a Charlotte and they lived in Medway, where this marriage to George BROOM took place.
I therefore think the Marriage to George BROOM is to the Charlotte HEDGES daughter of William HEDGES and Eliza CLARK.
This would mean the brother and sister married at the same time not the cousins. Opps
The certificates are on the way so we should know in about a week.
If I'm right who did Charlotte daughter of Elias Hedges and Alice Reynolds marry.

Good morning Sue, good to see you.
I'm pretty sure Charlotte is mine and sister to Henry HEDGES making them both children of William and Eliza. That would also explain why they are in the same place marring at the same time. Brother and Sister and a Double wedding. I couldn't Find the marriages on cityarc and wondered if there was a Registrars Office at that time.
Certs should arrive next week so will know then ;D

Looking through the posts on here, I have noted a couple that I don't think have been fully looked into.
I have notes on the following and wondered if there is anymore out there to find on them.

Did we find any more on and resolve whoshe married...
Esther  HEDGES= William ARNOLD or Thomas WHEEL in Romford Dec Q 1858 vol 4a 156

also I'm wondering if the ARNOLDS were brothers..

Mary Sophia HEDGES= John ARNOLD IN Romford Mar Q 1858 vol 4a 73
We have them as a couple on the 1861 census living next door to James and Eliza

I would like to know which one of these Elijah married.
Elijah HEDGES= Ellen Sophia DARTNELL or Mary STONE  in Romford Jun Q 1870 vol 4a 133

Just wondering if you got any more notes on these couples.
Jenny

It seems Elias Eastwood may have actually been born as John Eastwood.  Elias may just have been a transcription error.

I have a potential christening for him in Burwash for 1821... if it is him, he'd be a son of William Eastwood and Philadelphia Hawkins.

Philadelphia is a common name at that time in Sussex and I wouldn't be surprised at all if the family somehow linked to West Hoathly or East Grinstead.

Post by: James R. Yeowell on Saturday 29 November 08 16:18 GMT (UK)
The only issue with this John Eastwood is his birth... the census' say he was born about 1817 or so, whilst the christening says 1821... that's very tight for an 1835 marriage.

However, there are no other John Eastwoods born in Burwash around that time.  There are also no Elias'.

However, he isn't resident with the family in 1841... which does give us hope it is him.

Here they are in 1851:

Tott Houses, Burwash

William Eastwood, M, Head, married, age 66, born Etchingham, Sussex; occupation: Farm labourer
Philadelphia Eastwood, F, Wife, married, age 68, born Burwash, Sussex
John Rich, M, Lodger, married, age 56, born Mayfield, Sussex; occupation: Farm labourer

Another member of the family could be a Hawker but posing as a Farm Labourer, because they're located at the Road side.  There are also Hawkers in the village.

1841 census:

Location: Road side, Burwash Village

Henry Eastwood, M, Head, age 35, born Sussex; occupation Farm labourer
Ruth Eastwood, F, [Wife], age 35, born Sussex
Henry Eastwood, M, [Son], age 15, born Sussex
James Eastwood, M, [Son], age 13, born Sussex
Mary Eastwood, F, [Daughter], age 10, born Sussex
Thomas Eastwood, M, [Son], age 7, born Sussex
Ruth Eastwood, F, [Daughter], age 5, born Sussex
Harriott Eastwood, F, [Daughter], age 1, born Sussex

1851:

Location: Near Town Gate, Burwash Village

Henry Eastwood, M, Head, married, age 49, born Burwash, Sussex; occupation: Farm labourer
Ruth Eastwood, F, Wife, married, age 47, born Heathfield, Sussex
Henry Eastwood, M, Son, single, age 25, born Burwash, Sussex; occupation: Railway labourer
Thomas Eastwood, M, Son, single, age 17, born Burwash, Sussex; occupation: Farm labourer
Ruth Eastwood, F, Daughter, single, age 15, born Burwash, Sussex
Hariet Eastwood, F, Daughter, single, age 10, born Burwash, Sussex; occupation: Scholar
John Eastwood, M, Son, single, age 5, born Burwash, Sussex

Again, Near Town Gate, suggests they don't have a residence.  Perhaps they have a farm though and it's just not described as such.

Wow. Popped in for a quick look before I go and babysit my grandson and things have taken off.
Eastwoods every where. I will read through if my grandson allows me tonight and see if I can connect any. I don't know much about the Eastwoods in my family and what I do know is from much later.
The HEDGES from Jenkins Dale, Chatham all are mine  ;D also there are some in Sly Kates Hill Chatham that are all mine. William and Frances seamed to settle in Chatham and so much of my family can be found there.

Skinner Street is not far from Sly Katts Hill, so are this couple anything to do with your Hedges?

James I have had a look at my tree and I have the fillowing Thomas's listed but none seam to come close. By the census this Thomas would have been born in 1818 in Maidstone.

I have these...
Thomas Hedges 1801 b Unknown Married Eden Brewer
Thomas Hedges 1826 b Unknown Married Unknown son of Thomas and Eden
Thomas Hedges 9 March 1853 b Panfield Bocking Essex Married Unknown, son of James and Eliza
Thomas Hedges 1907 b Dartford area Married Elizabeth Loveridge son of Samson and Eliza Julia
Thomas Hedges 1868 b Chatham Married Unknown Son of Alfred and Eliza

I can provide more detailed information if needed but based on his age given he doesn't look like one of these.
As you can see I have very few marriage details for any of my Thomas Hedges. I would imagine he fits in my family somewhere but where I couldn't begin to guess.
Need more on him before I can place him somewhere. ;D

Added Sorry missed this one I have

Thomas Hedges 1876 b Sittingbourne Married Unknown Son of Elias and Alice.

Did Jenny have a Selina Hedges somewhere or was it a diff name ???

      Sue

Hi Sue I do have a Selina but she is further back. This is what I have...
Selina HEDGES b. 1840 at Lidsing Kent. Married Unknown. Father James HEDGES Mother Eliza JENNINGS

The Selina with the Penfolds appears to have been born 14 years later in 1854

Morning everyone

Blimey ...this is all so hard to keep up with ..... I think we def. need a summary of sorts ...will reread again LOL

Re Penfold = Hedges .... I will look into it ...how weird would it be if they were mine ...although my Penfolds were very much travellers and not house-dwellers.

deb :)

Hi Deb
You are brave to reread.
Blimey how can you summarize this lot, it's so confusing they are my family and I'm confused  :o

That's why I cannot find her on the 1881 census... poor Selina.

Now I am not sure which Edwin Arnold it's likely to be... Lewisham is more Essex than Kent, isn't it?  Yet there is are some Edwin Arnolds in Kent that could be him.

This is not another case of sisters Selina and Sophia marring brothers again is it.

I've spotted this in 1881:

   Dwelling:   Scocles Cottage
Census Place:   Minster In Sheppey, Kent, England
Source:   FHL Film 1341232     PRO Ref RG11    Piece 0978    Folio 28    Page 5

   Occ:   Agricultural Labourer
William HEDGES   U   22    M   Sheerness, Kent, England

This Thomas was a widow already at age 25... could it be Thomas Isaac Hedges?

No not in Scockles cottage about 10 minutes walk away in Minster though.
I have known there were Hedges on the Island but never thought they might be connected to mine. Now that would be something if a connection could be made.

Here we go again... another sister possibly marrying an Arnold!

Surname     First name(s)          District     Vol     Page
Marriages Dec 1858   (>99%)
Arnold    William        Romford    4a   156
Hanscomb    Mary Ann         Romford    4a   156
Hanscombe    Mary Ann         Romford    4a   156
Hedges    Esther         Romford    4a   156
Wheel    Thomas         Romford    4a   156
Wheele    Thomas         Romford    4a   156

Esther Hedges is of course likely a sister of Sophia and Selina Hedges.

And this:

Surname     First name(s)          District     Vol     Page
Marriages Jun 1864   (>99%)
Arnold    Sarah        Romford    4a   125
Harris    William         Romford    4a   125
Hedges    James         Romford    4a   125
Staines    Eliza Elizabeth         Romford    4a   125

But we know James Hedges married Eliza Elizabeth Staines, so it seems William Harris married Sarah Arnold.

There's a Harris family in Chatham who are Hawkers.

No, I'm from Wiltshire and have never been to Kent, as far as I am aware.

However, I've come across some Yeowells in Ightham but they seem unrelated.

Having been researching for 18 years or so, you learn where certain surnames are prevalent.

No travellers in our family, no.  There is rumour of Horse Dealers on my mother's side... possibly linked to the Housdens of Saffron Walden but we're not really sure.

I'm just helping out because I wanted to.

I shall look into those names.  Most of my family are not from Wiltshire but London, Surrey, Essex and Cambridgeshire.  I don't know of Watt but there are many Watts in Wiltshire and Hampshire.

James I can't find a death Registration for the first Ester ARNOLD listed and am considering that there is only one Esther and that  she was christened twice. I have heard of this happening before.
I am wondering if they had another child christened on the same day and had both done. Perhaps a check on cityark for both. I will go see what I can find.

ooo thanks james

i know we have this info already .... but I am still only on page 10 ...your info is so helpful as aI will not have to scour this LONG LONG thread HEE HEE

BTW Jen ....
1841 ...we found William Hedges 65 and 'son' Joseph 20 both chairbottomers in prison ... In 1841 did they round up ages if you were 16 or older ...if so joseph could be another brother born between 1816-1820 ..... or if they rounded down he could be born 1811-1815  either way he would fit in.

I've just found this and thought it was worth posting:

1881:

   Dwelling:   63 Stockwell Road
   Census Place:   Lambeth, Surrey, England
Source:   FHL Film 1341140     PRO Ref RG11    Piece 0609    Folio 47    Page 11
   Marr   Age   Sex   Birthplace
William A. DAVIS   M   35    M   Lewisham, Kent, England
   Rel:   Head
   Occ:   Baker & Confectioner
Charlotte DAVIS   M   27    F   Rye, Sussex, England
   Rel:   Wife
   Occ:   Baker & Confectioner Wife
William E. DAVIS       2    M   Stockwell, Surrey, England
   Rel:   Son
Thomas CUMBERS   U   17    M   Romford, Essex, England
   Rel:   Assistant
   Occ:   Assistant
Margaret LOWE   U   42    F   Walsall, Stafford, England
   Rel:   Lodger
   Occ:   Cook Domestic Servant

William A. Davis could be related to the the Davis' who married into the Hedges... but also note Thomas Cumbers.  Now datewise, he could be a brother of Alfred Cumbers.  His place of birth fits too.

There's also a William, Samuel and Elizabeth Cumbers in Surrey, all except Elizabeth, born Romford, who also could be siblings.

Deb
Elizabeth is a possibility as a sister but need to keep it open until we have some more evidence I think. Tried looking for her in 1851 but found nothing in Surry, Sussex Kent or Essex. that looks obvious to me.
I have Joseph chalked up as another possible brother, Hadn't thought about the age rounding up thing. So you have a good point there. Perhaps a hunt at some point for some more evidence will be on the cards. Needs putting on the to do list.
I'm sure there must be siblings out there other than the 4 we have as ages are to spread for there not to be more.
There are names repeated in the family over and over, the 4 brothers are in the habit of naming their children after the brother I'm sure they must have did it with sisters too. Stands to reason really.

Added.. I must leave you all as I am heading home soon babysitting finished. I will catch up with you all in the morning.

I believe it's Olive Hedges, daughter of Elias Hedges and Alice Reynolds.

I have noted her down as born about 1866 in Southfleet.

Southfleet/Southlea

I think it's her.  Yes, she has a brother named Elijah as well.

I'm ahead of you there, Deb!

In relation to the Tickners, check the web link I posted, it has all the descendants of John Tickner and Eden Hedges on it.

I'll repost it: http://web.ukonline.co.uk/the.nook/charts/t/tickn507.htm

Oh and the Tickners fit into my own tree, which means I have this branch of the Hedges in there.  Hopefully when we can determine if they're all brothers, I'll be able to merge my other database in with it.  I am not related to the Tickners, however, they just link to other families that married people who are related to me.

Sorry to hear that, Deb.

I shall try and help you fix it tomorrow.

Oh and yes, John Tickner's birth was out and it wasn't the John Tickner I originally thought.  However, the John Tickner he actually is, is still linked in to my tree.

And I just found a Tickner in Cambridgeshire that may have married an Andrews relative of mine... please don't tell me there's a link there as well!

Just to let you know, John Tickner and Eden Hedges are resident at Sutton Place, Shere, Surrey on every census from 1841, so they should be easy to find.  That information is via the website I posted earlier.  It's very informative.

I do not have any noted down, sorry.  I also cannot find them on the 1881 census.  I shall try and look for them again tomorrow.

Do we already have this

ELIAS HEDGES
Christening:  06 SEP 1868   West Farleigh, Kent, England
  Parents:
  Father:  ELIAS HEDGES  Family
  Mother:  ALICE

ELVEY HEDGES  ( Is this Alby or Olive) Christening:  09 SEP 1866   West Farleigh, Kent, England
Parents:
  Father:  ELIAS HEDGES  Family
  Mother:  ALICE

NANCY HEDGES  (I already have this but looks like they was West Farleigh quite a lot)  Christening:  25 SEP 1870   West Farleigh, Kent, England
  Father:  JOB HEDGES  Family
  Mother:  PHEBE

ROSA HEDGES
Christening:  11 SEP 1864   West Farleigh, Kent, England
Father:  WILLIAM HEDGES  Family (Think I'm getting William Phobia. Who is this married to an Olive?)  Mother:  OLIFF

Just after this post I found a Sampson Hedges s.o Thomas and Oliff born same place

now we know that Elias hedges (s/o James and Eliza, and married Alice Reynolds) had a baby brother Thomas who died in the cholera epidemic in 1854, So who would Thomas be who married Oliff and was having children at the same time frame in the same place?

here we have Job s/o Job (one of the brothers) = Phoebe Gumble
Elias s/o James (one of the brothers) = Alice Reynolds
Thomas s/o ?? = Oliff??
deb

added ..is the Rosa Hedges chr 1864 one of those who was on the Marriage with Charlotte Bibby and the hedges boys?

Deb I have the census for John and Jane for 1871. 1881. 1891 and 1901. On each one there is only John and Jane with no children listed. I'm guessing they couldn't have children. In 1871 they are living with Parents William and Frances who are on the page before. Also living there is Alfred and Eliza another son of William and Frances. So if John and Jane had children they don't seam to be recorded on the census. Did we find some elsewhere.

Here I am flying in from the Corke/Cooley Kent thread!!!  ;)

I don't think that Jane Cooley and John Hedges had any children.  I have had a look for her as I think she is the sister of my Richard Corke/Cooley, and I have her up until 1901 through the censuses (except, of course, the frustrating 1851 where all my lot are missing).

There seem to be no children in any.  So unless there were children who died - haven't found any of them, yet - there are no children of that marriage.

Sue I'm not at all sure what to be looking for at the moment. I am rather hoping that Debs summery might make clear where we need to be looking next.
Having said that this William and Oliff needs further investigation along with The Thomas and Oliff that deb mentions. Are you following me. What do you think.

ROSA HEDGES
Christening:  11 SEP 1864   West Farleigh, Kent, England
Father:  WILLIAM HEDGES  Family (Think I'm getting William Phobia. Who is this married to an Olive?)  Mother:  OLIFF

There is also mention of another Brother (Joseph HEDGES mentioned in prison 1841) and a Sister (Elizabeth mentioned on a census with Thomas senior) for the 4 brothers, that could do with further investigation.
Take your pick. ;D

Thomas TRIPTHORPE and Olive HEDGES had a daughter Olive TRIPTHORPE b. 1899 in Cheshunt at the time of the above marriage that you found, she would be 18 and this is most likely her marriage to Welch
I don't know of Welch being a travellers name.

Hi Deb This is the Joseph Hedges I have on my tree it could be one of these but haven't checked if the dates would work out. My brain won't do dates today. Hang on these that I have are both to late. So who is this one. He would be born about 1833. To late to be an addition to the 4 brothers.

Joseph HEDGES b 1843 son of William HEDGES and Frances JENNINGS Marriage UNKNOWN

Looks as if the HEDGES liked to get their children baptised when they came hopping/fruit picking in Kent - lots of September christenings.

Have you tried the HEDGES Rootsweb mailing list (especially this post)?

Geez ..... I think the missing 1851 holds all the clues ....typical!

I am trying to figure out Joseph , chairbottomer in prison in 1841 (remember ages rounded up or down , can't remember which way  :-\)

also who is Elizabeth in 1841 with son John living with Thomas and Eden?

Oh gosh, that link just confuses us even more!  Those Hedges are of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire... places we've not really looked into yet!  And apparently they're of the travelling community as well.

This just gets harder with every new bit of information!  Perhaps if we start looking in Cambridgeshire, we could somehow make a link?

Of course, the link between all these families could be in the 18ths century or even earlier.  I have no history of the travelling community but don't just suppose they turned up in the middle of the 19th century, so when did all these families start to live like this?  It also seems many later brancehs settled down and became labourers or.

All we know of Joseph is he is listed as 20 according to the 1841 census he would have been born in 1821
(which is the same year as Job HEDGES who he may be brother to.)
As for Elizabeth it is the same, we have an entry on the 1841 census where she is living with Thomas she is 30 so will be born 1811.
As Deb reminded me they rounded ages of all those of adult age. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) they rounded up/down to the nearest 10.
Having said that I am looking at the originals and It looks like they are rounding to the nearest 5 as they have entries of age 25 and 35 etc.
Blimey how are you supposed to work out how old they were. Why couldn't they just put their correct ages down. Grrrrrrrr.
I hate numbers, it's no wonder I get lost.

Title: Re: Need Advice on connecting HEDGES brothers
Post by: James R. Yeowell on Sunday 30 November 08 16:10 GMT (UK)
I believe they round up for those over the age of 14.  So anyone aged less than 14, should in theory, have the correct age.

I've seen many ages recorded correctly on the 1841 census in my time though.  In fact, I've not come across rounded up entries as much as I thought I would.

The entry you speak of, however, does indeed look like it is rounded up in some way.  Very confusing!

Here's their marriage:

Perhaps Joseph Hedges who married Emily Linton could be another BROTHER

Joseph is bc 1818 possibly cambridge...his father is WILLIAM

all your Brothers have a DAD , WILLIAM

There is also Joseph in prison aged 15-20, with his dad William in 1841, both chairbottomers ....if we could find Joseph and Emily in 1851 we could maybe figure out if they do connect with your brothers.

There's this too:

JOSEPH HEDGES     Pedigree
     Male

Event(s):
   Birth:
   Christening:
15 JUL 1831      Braintree, Essex, England
   Death:
   Burial:

Parents:
     Father:     THOMAS HEDGES    Family
     Mother:     SARAH

That would fit for the Joseph Hedges that married Elizabeth Cooper.  Well, his age is out by 2 years but that's not a big problem.

But then you also have this guy:

JOSEPH HEDGES     Pedigree
     Male

Event(s):
   Birth:
   Christening:
04 OCT 1835      Saint Michael, Saint Albans, Hertford, England
   Death:
   Burial:

Parents:
     Father:     THOMAS HEDGES    Family
     Mother:     SARAH

Same family?
Title: Re: Need Advice on connecting HEDGES brothers
Post by: James R. Yeowell on Sunday 30 November 08 16:29 GMT (UK)
They're separate families, I believe, both Thomas and Sarahs had other children in their respective areas.

Here's the marriage for the Braintree Thomas Hedges:

THOMAS HEDGES
     Male
Event(s):
   Birth:
   Christening:
   Death:
   Burial:

Marriages:
     Spouse:     SARAH RAYNER
     Marriage:
14 NOV 1816      Braintree, Essex, England

Children:

1. Thomas Hedges, chr. 23 Aug. 1822, Braintree
2. Mary Maria Hedges, chr. 23 Aug. 1822, Braintree
3. William Hedges, chr. 24 Jul. 1824, Braintree
4. Emily Hedges, chr. 6 Jul. 1827, Braintree
5. Sarah Hedges, chr. 6 Mar. 1829, Braintree
6. Joseph Hedges, chr. 15 Jul. 1831, Braintree
7. Edward Hedges, chr. 2 Oct. 1833, Braintree
8. Charles Henry Hedges, chr. 9 Mar. 1836, Braintree

Note: Thomas and Mary Maria were christened together, so both of them could indeed be born before 1822, especially as the couple married in 1816.

What about the Braintree family?

I'm also thinking they're not linked because they seem to stay where they are.

Edward Hedges, son of Thomas and Sarah Hedges seems to have married in 1851:

Surname     First name(s)     Age     District     Vol     Page
                        Marriages Sep 1851   (>99%)
Chenery    Mary Ann        Braintree    12   27
Cook    Sarah Rebecca         Braintree    12   27
Copeman    John Breeze         Braintree    12   27
Dyball    Harriet Frances         Braintree    12   27

Can I be a pain and ask for that 1841 census entry with Elizabeth and John Hedges on it?

I've lost track again.

Thanks.

Edit: no need, found it

Could this be John Hedges?

JOHN HEDGES     Pedigree
     Male

Event(s):
   Birth:
   Christening:
22 OCT 1837      Aldbury, Hertford, England
   Death:
   Burial:

Parents:
     Father:     WILLIAM HEDGES    Family
     Mother:     ELIZABETH

There was a John christened in Kingston Upon Thames in 1837 as well but his mother wasn't an Elizabeth.

Plus the above couple, William and Elizabeth, seemed to only have two sons, a Thomas Hedges, christened in 1834 and the above John Hedges.

I'm not Jenny but all we know is she wasn't born in Surrey and neither was John (possibly her son, although it doesn't say what their relationship is).  Also realise she may have had her aged rounded, so she could have been born before or after 1811.

Perhaps this is a silly question but has someone checked Windsor parish records or put out a request to get them checked?
No I haven't. Is that possible.

Perhaps at the Berkshire board, someone maybe willing to be of assistance.  It's worth a try.

I don't believe Old Windsor is on the IGI.  Of course, he could have been non-conformist as well.  There also is a chance he hasn't been christened but I still definitely think it's worth your while asking, you never know!

JOSEPH HEDGES = Elizabeth COOPER  (another big Gypsy Family)

That surely is a mistake?  If he was 18 in 1851 (or 20, if that christening in 1831 is for him), then how could this possibly be him?

Having said that:

Very curious indeed!

I think we have two different Joseph Hedges marrying two different Eliza/Elizabeth Coopers.

As I suspected:

A quick question:

Do we have any proof that the Sarah Ann Eastwood who married Jeremiah Hedges was the one born in September Quarter of 1856?

I just feel this isn't her.

The baptism of a Sarah Anne Eastwood, daughter of James Eastwood and Sarah, in Hadlow in 1850, fits much better for her.

Do we have her on a census anywhere?

Just wish to mention something relating to the ARNOLD'S mentioned earlier.
Many years ago I called into Chatham Ref. Library and photocopied some old (1932 is the earliest but mostly 1960 ish) and some not so old news clippings about Gypsies most relate to an area known as Sugar loaf Hill, Chatham, Kent. A Gypsy encampment.
I have a list of names that I have extracted from the clippings that include ARNOLD and many others that may be of interest to others researching Travellers from the area .
Do you think I should put this list of names on a separate thread.
some of the family mentioned in these news paper clippings include....
ARNOLD
EASTWOOD
BRAZIL
SMALL
PERFECT

The whole link to Burwash, Sussex confuses me though.

The Burwash Eastwoods are traceable.  However, there's Eastwoods in Kent in the 18th century as well... so I have this feeling that John Eastwood who married Harriet Jennings maybe unrelated to the Burwash Eastwoods, despite being born there.  I don't know... hmm.

That's a coincidence...

I was just over at the Berkshire board and noticed posts about a Jeremiah Hedges of Farrington, Berkshire.

However, I'm not sure if there is a link.  His father was also a William Hedges, I believe.

Sue (aka Jamajo) has been posting in that thread, so she may know more.

But yes... you can post a request looking for a possible baptism/christening for a Job Hedges, in Windsor (or a parish nearby) for about 1821 (give or take 5 or so years).  With a possible father named William Hedges and possible siblings as well.

Well just checked it and the Jeremiah the father was a tailor, his son Jeremiah was a bootmaker

not sure it will be any of your family though Jenny.

I also done look-ups for a Charles Hedges occ tailor who married a Mary Cooper

b Faringdon. They married in 1829 and one witness was a Benjamin Cooper.

Not sure that these will link with yours Jenny but names of their children are unusual.  Having

searched these PRs i do know there were travellers in Faringdon also other places nearby.

If you go to Berkshire Look-up Requests board you will see all info on different Hedges families

that i have looked into ;D ;D

I have found this marriage Jenny

Jeremiah Hedges = Sarah Ann Eastwood or Harriet Tanner

 Jeremiah b 1848 s/o Job

I found the marriage of the other couple ...quote from pages back;
Jenny ...re the marriage of Jeremiah ...the other man on the page was a Sidney Eaton

I have found Sidney Eaton , b 1849 with wife HARRIET in Romford , Essex on the 1871 census ...

so if Sidney Eaton = Harriet Tanner then Jeremiah Hedges must = Sarah Ann EASTWOOD.

Yes, she would have been 14/15 when she married... that's why I thought that birth registration for 1856 was the wrong one but now it seems it's the right one.

Unfortunately that particular record is very faint and you cannot see the registration district.

You can also work out when the weddings took place.  Charlotte was still a Hedges at her brother's marriage, so she got married afterwards but on the same day.

It adds a little more anyhow.

Don't you dare feel bad. You have done so much and worked so tirelessly to solve my queries and it has been so confusing for us all. Better to know that not know. Any way I should have checked my records before ordering and I would have noticed. It really is no great loss. It is also great to see my Great uncle Henry's marriage Certificate and to see his marriage was immediately before his sister Charlotte's It must have been a lively day for them to both marry on the same day.
You are right about ordering the others could I ask you to pull the details forward so I can order them ;D

Hi there-  I am not quite sure if this is what you are looking for, but my great-great-grandmother's name was Albey Hedges, and she married Alfred Cumbers, and was located in Romford, Essex & Herts.  She reportedly was a traveller, but that is all the information that I have on her.  If she is related to the brothers, please let me know, as this would help fill in some gaps.  She had about 12 children and seems to have given birth to Elias (1885) in Tralon, Kent, Eliza (1887) Southend-on sea, and Olive (1891) & Alice (1892) in Flamstead, Herts.  It would be wonderful to know more.
Hi
This is first time I have used Rootschat so basically I do not know what I am doing but I shall give it a try.
The Elias you have is my granddad but to confuse things on his birth and death certs he was Alfred but the rest of the time he seems to have used the name Elias. He was born in Teston Kent and died in Romford in 1957. His mother I think was called Alvey and not Albey and this seems to be logical since my grandad's daughter was also called Alvey.

Hi Jenny
I am very much groping in the dark with this whole family history thing. It seems that most of the ancestors used a different name to their given name and grandad's wife used the surnames Yelding and Hilden at different times. My uncle told me that this was to avoid the taxman.(not that any of them paid a penny in tax in their lives.) Granddad was born Alfred Cumbers on 14th Sept 1985 at Teston near Maidstone in a traveller's caravan and he died on 2nd July 1957 at Elm Road Collier Row. I presume that Alvey was related to your Hedges as they all seemed to be Licensed Hawkers and travelled from place to place together. (This is what my Uncle told me). I have not been able to find any BDM certs for my grandad's siblings Olive, Alice, Phyllis and Henry so if you find any info on them I would be pleased to know. I haven't got as far as going back to the Hedges side yet but I might get there eventually. Which of Alvey and Alfred's children is your ggrandparent?
I am going around in circles so I haven't got as far as drawing up a family tree but I shall get there eventually. I cannot really follow the threads very well but was it you who mentioned the Old Rose and Crown.? I would love to know where it was as my Dad was born there but I never heard it mentioned when I was living at home. ( long time ago now)
Thanks Keith

Hi Keith
Firstly I will try to explain how we are related.

Your grandfather was Elias CUMBERS born 1885          My Grandmother was Ena HEDGES born 1914

Mother to Elias is as you know                                      Father to Ena is
Alvy HEDGES 1845                                                         Samson William Henry HEDGES 1862

Parents to Alvy are...                                                     Parents to Samson are...
Elias HEDGES 1844 and Alice REYNOLDS 1846              William HEDGES 1832 and Eliza Clark 1834

Parents to Elias 1844 are...                                           Parents To William 1832 are...
James HEDGES Abt.1815= Eliza JENNINGS 1816           William HEDGES Abt.1815= Frances
                                                                                                                           JENNINGS1814

We have good reason to believe James HEDGES 1815 and William HEDGES are brothers
We also believe Eliza JENNINGS 1816 and Frances JENNINGS 1814 are Sisters.

I hope I have done this in a way that you can see the connection. I have descended from William HEDGES 1815 while you have descended from his brother James HEDGES 1815.

The lady who descended From Alvy and Alfred is Janice, she was with us on the forum for a while but we haven't heard from her in a while. I hope she pops back as you and her must be even closer related that you and I. I think she was the one who mentioned the Old Rose and Crown.

Can I ask who Elias (Alfred) Cumbers Married and the names and birth year for any children they had if you know them it will help me to understand fully how we are connected as I have no idea what happened to your Grandfather Elias as he grew up. It would be nice to fill in the spaces.
Regards Jenny

Hi Jenny
I don't think that I shall even attempt to research the Hedges line judging by the headaches you have had. I thought that I would print off all the messages on this subject and ended up with 166 pages to read at my leisure.
I have got about a quarter of the way through and there is some very interesting stuff. I saw some references to IGI christenings/baptisms. Can you tell me where I can find this as some time ago I found an interesting website for gypsy baptisms in Kent where I got some good information. I also noted that you live in Kent which is strange since I spent 30 years living in north Kent (must be the gypsy blood in us taking us back to our roots). If you are registered with GenesReunited I can open my family tree to you so that you can get some idea of where I come from. I am rubbish with computers and I just fiddle about but I am going to see my daughter tomorrow and her husband is a bit of Nerd so I shall get him to list some of the old photographs I have, although I am not 100% sure who the people are. One other little snippet I remember from my youth, is that an old boy in a pub in Ongar told me that Alvey Cumbers (Hedges) used to go around Collier Row in a cart pulled by an old brown and white mare. No relevance really but it might tie in with the comment that she was a travelling carpet saleswoman.
Thanks for your help and I shall get back to reading up on the pages I printed off.

Welcome, Keith, to the forum.

I do not have anything to add but I just wanted to say that I forgot to mention the fact I have ancestors from Flamstead in Hertfordshire, where some of the Hedges lived for a time.  My Ginger and Potton families intermarried (they were from Great Gaddesden and Flamstead) and were not travellers but I don't think they were particularly well off either.

I just thought I would mention them.  A lot of the families in this area of Hertfordshire became Methodists and many of their baptisms and marriages can be found in Luton, Bedfordshire, whilst they were still living in Hertfordshire.

Hey Girls:
You're both out for the night.  Anyway, I contacted a distant relative who has been doing a chart and who sent me some attachments that I can't open a few years ago.  I have contacted her again tonight.  She told me that a couple of years ago that she could trace back to Samuel Hedges in 1771.  Who knows, maybe this is the father of all the brothers!!!!!!!  Anyway, looks like we are going to solve it one way or the other.
As for me, I was raised in Romford, Essex, and most of my mother's immedate family lived in Collier Row.  Grandfather Cumbers and Alvey owned an old pub called the Rose and Crown (according to my mother), and also owned the land near Clock House Lane, that became a housing tract after WWII.  Romford must have been a little village in those days.
When I get the chart, I will paste it on the site for you.  J.

Am I correct in thinking both these couples had children?  I am sure there's reference to this somewhere, of so, could you relist the census entries please?

Also, who did Elijah Hedges marry?

There's this entry on FreeBMD:

Surname     First name(s)     Age     District     Vol     Page
Births Mar 1870   (>99%)
ATKINS    Alice        Dartford    2a   383
FLETCHER    Edith Jane         Dartford    2a   383
Harding    Mary         Dartford    2a   383
HEDGES    Elijah         Dartford    2a   383
HUNT    Herbert Edwin         Dartford    2a   383
Perfect    Rose         Dartford    2a   383
POFFLEY    Arthur Thomas         Dartford    2a   383
ROBINSON    Alfred         Dartford    2a   383
THOMAS    Eliza Jane         Dartford    2a   383
Wilkes    Matilda         Dartford    2a   383

Rose Perfect seems the likeliest candidate from the above.  We also know the Perfect family were travellers and Rose was very much a travellers name too.

Thanks.

James.

Hi again everyone.
Sorry to be slow in reply but I have been away for nearly a week.
Did Deb manage to find out who Janice is related to, as I am very keen to contact her.
I have noticed on the certificate of marriage of Alvey Hedges to Alfred Cumbers I think that she must of lied about her age by a couple of years to make herself 21. Also one of the witnesses was Olive Hedges who I presume was her sister. The other witness Harry Shepherd. Does anybody know who he was?
The Hedges line down to my family is as Jenny said, from James Hedges b1816.
Thank you all again for your help.
Regards
Keith

As for me, I was raised in Romford, Essex, and most of my mother's immediate family lived in Collier Row.  Grandfather Cumbers and Alvey owned an old pub called the Rose and Crown (according to my mother), and also owned the land near Clock House Lane, that became a housing tract after WWII.  Romford must have been a little village in those days.
When I get the chart, I will paste it on the site for you.  J.

Hi Keith

This is the last post that we received from Janice it was on Saturday 22 November. We haven't heard from her since I'm afraid. Have you tried sending her a PM.  She mentions above that she is the granddaughter of Alfred Cumbers and Alvey Hedges. Sorry I can't help more. I do hope Janice joins us again.

Hello Jenny
I have just stumbled across your posts on the Hedges family. My name is Peter and I can confirm that we are related. My great grandfather is Henry Hedges who is your great uncle. I was amazed to see a photo of him as I do not have one. Do you have any other photos of the Hedges family? My nan is Eliza Hedges born 1894. I remember seeing Henry Hedges just the once but my nan pulled me into an alley because she did not want to see him. I am afraid he was not a nice man but I can tell you about that later. I trawled through all 36 pages of the posts and I can help confirm some of your findings. I have extracted some of the pages to have a look at later but did you manage to solve your original problem about the Hedges brothers and subsequently who their parents were? By the way I was brought up the Brook area of Chatham but I currently live in Gillingham.
This is the first time I have posted anything on Roots Chat.
Let me know if I can help
Regards
Peter

Hi Peter, great to hear from you. Well done for managing to get through all those posts. Sorry I haven't got back to you earlier I have been rather busy, of late. I am pleased  you enjoyed the photo of Henry I must get a decent copy to you. I have often wondered about Henry's descendant's and realized there was possibly some still in madway. As far as I can remember I was told Henry and Samson were close brother and got on well. They looked very much alike in the photo I have only Samson is taller. Feel free to email me at email address removed by moderator - please use the secure Rootschat personal message system to exchange personal email addresses - thankyou  and I can see to it you get a quality copy of Henry's photo.

Hello India 2
My name is Peter and my nan was Eliza Hedges the sister of your nan  Rose Ann Hedges. I have a photograph of Eliza with a lady who I believe is her sister Rose Ann. Perhaps you may be able to confirm this for me. You are correct about Margaret Boswell. In fact my nan adopted her daughter Joyce after she died. My mum Rose always moaned about the fact that she had to share her bedroom with Joyce. I have a photo of Joyce with Eliza. I also have a some stories about Henry Hedges your great grandfather. However I am not sure that they should be aired in the public domain. If you care to send me more details about yourself and your e-mail address then perhaps we can go into more detail.

Peter

Hi All and Peter and Debs
I have finally found a moment to let you all know I am still popping in to read the posts every now and then, but am just so busy at the moment.
I have no time for family research.
It is good to hear everyone is getting on nicely and making progress.
I was a little surprised about Henry Hedges having such a bad reputation. I only knew of him because my Nan Ena HEDGES mentioned him being on the Hoadley wedding photo. I was never told anything about the Chatham branch of the family. Except that Samsons parents lived there and that his mother used to sit on the front doorstep and smoked a clay pipe.

Don't know about the Hoadley family. It looks as if we have some of the same ancesters. its great to be able to check receords.

The Henry Hedges I know, was born in 1892, his father was also Henry Hedges a labourer. Henry
married Margaret Boswell in 1914. Her father was Jonh Boswell a horse dealer. They lived at
9 Regents Court, New Road, Chatham, Kent. I believe there is another  Henry Hedges family.

Hello Joyce
Have I found yet another relative on the Hedges side of the family. The address 9 Regents Court was the address that my nan Eliza Hedges gave when she married my grandfather Tommy Hughes in 1914. I haven't managed to find Regents Court. I think that it was somewhere near the New Road in Chatham. I am always after photographs. Do you have any of the Hedges family?
Best Regards

as I get someone to help me. Other address's that they lived in, were,Best street,Russel square,
Hoopers road Rochester, and Princess street, Rochester. Grandad (Henry Hedges) also used the name Carter-Hedges. My uncle, William Hedges now lives in Gillingham.

Hi,
I wonder if anyone has any information on Henry Hedges, born 1891, father also Henry, mother was
Rose Ann Carter, parents weren't married at the time. Henry born 1891, married Margaret Boswell on
24 August 1914. I'm unable to trace anything on Margaret, except that she was born about 1892,
and died 11 August 1935. Henry and Margaret had many children, some didn't survive, but the others
were, William Rose, Ellen, Margaret, Joyce and George.
Thanks, Joyce

Hi Joyce,
your grandfather was my Nan's brother. l heard he was a very nice man. My mum Mary lived opposite Henry and Noony (Margaret Boswell) in Best St. Chatham. They all went away fruit picking to Iwade, where the farmer took my mum and Ivy to the little village school. they travelled with his own two children like stunt riders on his motorbike mum tells me. It was while they were away that Noony went into labour. She walked all the way back to Chatham on her own to Best st. when the others realized she had gone they returned to find her in a very bad way. Unfortunately she died soon after they returned. my mum was about ten at the time and remembers the funeral vividly.

l have quite a few stories that mum used to tell me when l was a little girl. She,s a brilliant story teller and l was fascinated. l have related a lot of them in my autobiography that l am working on.

Unfortunately l have no photos other than the ones Peter kindly let me have. l would be pleased however, if you have any l can share. if you would like any more information that maybe l can help with, don't hesitate to ask.

best wishes
Tricia

Everyone knew her though as Annie Giddins. Aunt Annie. Just noticed your name is Campbell. Not related to the Campbells in Chatham? My nans best friend was Kate Campbell. l was brought up in Chatham but moved to Suffolk in later life.

Did you ever make the connection, then? :-\ Can't justify that long a read to see if William & Susanna were the right
parents, etc...

and here's something I found with a few more Hedges/ because you simply haven't enough...( also Cumbers, eastwoods, etc)

Hi everyone
Sorry to barge in midway through the thread but it appears I am also related to this line of the Hedges family.  Rose Ann Carter 1873 who married Henry Hedges 1869 are my great great grandparents.  My nan is one of the daughters of Rose Ann Hedges and William Giddins.  I recognise (I think) some of the people on here despite their user names from another site.  Its great to get further information and find out how far the family tree extends.  My nan's decendents live in the North west now and have for many years.  It would be great to hear tales from long ago.

I have just discovered this post and find it fascinating.  My grandfather is Joby Hedges and his father is James Hedges (born 1905).  James had Brothers named Joby, Henry, & Jack (John?).  Their father I believe was also called James & married Mathilda Matthews.  Clearly from the family christian names they fit somewhere into the family you have all been researching but can anyone tell me where, please?

Hi, I am new to this site but wish I had found it 3 yrs ago when I started researching into my hubbys ancestry. His grandfather was Walter hedges son of Jeremiah Hedges. I have filled in soooooooo many gaps with the help of all of you on here. Now I can put Job Hedges' (1821) father as William 1776, I have been stuck on this for 12 months. Does any one know any background on Jeremiah Hedges 1849. My late father in law said that my late mother in law had said that when Jeremiah died people lined the streets and apparently there are newspaper photos of it. My hubbys cousin also confirms this as she has seen the pic herself many yrs ago. Any help you can give will be gratefully received.   :) :) ;)

Since I posted this I have found that I am on the wrong track a bit

Lucky I browsed this board on a whim, my great aunt Councellatta (by marriage) was a Romany, her mother's maiden name was Nancy Hedges who married Dives Flack in 1892 at Chelmsford, Essex, so seeing the name Hedges I thought let's have a look and there was your useful tip.   Just shows it pays to go with 'gut feelings'.  ;D

Hi,

Thought I'd add a piece of the large Jig Saw puzzle in case someone might be interested in Nancy Hedges, daughter of Job Hedges and Phoebe Gumble.

Nancy married a Gypsy/Traveller Dives Flack in 1892 at Chelmsford (Essex) Registry Office.

Councellatta Flack daughter of Dives and Nancy married my great uncle Arthur Searles in 1924 at Little Leighs Essex parish church, Arthur was not a Gypsy/Traveller.

Regards.

Hi Emma  :)

Nice to see you back! If you can give us a little more info we may be able to help!

Where was William Spencer (1850) born?
Do you have his children's names, DOB and POB?
What censuses do you have him and his family in?
Do you have Olivia's marriage certificate to William Spencer? If so who is his father and his occupation? who were the witnesses ...etc etc ...all info could be relevant.

I don't have any connection to the Hedges family ...It was a great search though!  :D

Hi Emma

William b 1850 is proving hard to find.

I have found these two baptisms, one of which would confirm your William ending up in Tottenham by 1911.

Baptism:
Edmonton, Christ Church, Southgate, Middlesex
Born June 26th, 1878
Bapt 1 Sept 1878
Eliza Spencer, child of William and Olivia, Living in Romford Essex, William’s occupation: Basket Maker

A new child to add:
Hackney, Stoke Newington, St Matthias
2nd Jan 1887
Esher Spencer (could be Esther?) child of William  and Olivia Spencer, Barratt Grove, Occ: Licensed Hawker

Now that we have Esher/Esther this could be him in 1901:
Charlton, London
William Spencer, head, wid, 50 Oilcloth? Hawker b Barking Essex
Annie dau, 19  ………. Could she be Mary A?
Esther dau 13
Albert son 11

I will look more more

Just located some material I couldn't find before, I doubt it will help this topic but I'll throw it in just for the record

As I stated previously Councellatta Flack, aka Councie, aka Connie, is my great aunt by marriage, she married my paternal grandmother's brother Arthur Searles, Concellatta is the daughter of Dives Flack and Nancy Hedges.  Arthur Searles was not a Traveller or Romany, Councellatta was said to be a Romany.

Register Office, Chelmsford, Essex:-
23 Feb 1892 Dives FLACK 23 years bachelor hawker of Chelmsford son of Thomas Flack Horsedealer and Nancy HEDGES 21 years spinster of Chelmsford dau of Job Hedges, deceased, Hawker Wits: Edward Fewell and Mary Ann Fewell.

Hedges info obtained by me from the Public Trees on Ancestry.com
The parents of Nancy Hedges are Job Hedges a licensed Hawker (born 1843) and Phoebe Gumble (born 1841), they married in 1864 at Romford, Essex, Job & Phoebe said to be born in Bredhurst, Kent.

Their children:
Job born 1866 in Essex
Ruthie born 1867.
Caroline born 1868 in Romford, Essex.
Nancy born 1870 in Birmin, Kent. (baptised 25 Sep 1870 at West Fairleigh, Kent.)
Carry born 188?
Harriett born 1884.
James born 1888.

I'm very grateful for Councellatta marrying Arthur, that marriage adds a bit of colour to my almost colourless tree, the only other person to do so was an ancestor sibling who was the last man hung in Essex.  ;D

I'm so excited to have found this, I can't even express it! I've died and gone to Ancestry heaven!

Okay so I've got;
James Hedges (1816-1877) married Eliza Jennings (1816-?)
Children:
Esther Hedges (1837-?)
Elias Hedges (1839-1926) married to Alice (my 3rd great grandfather and grandmother)
Sophia Hedges (1839-?)
Selena Hedges (1840-?) married Edwin Arnold
Elijah Hedges (1845-1910) married Mary
Alfred Hedges (1848 - ?)
Olive Hedges (1850-?)
Henry Hedges (1856-?)
Rosa Hedges (1858 - ?)

I've also got a lot of their children listed but wayyyy to man to mention.
I have a few newspaper articles about people if I can share them?

Could I pitch in about Thomas Hedges & Eden Brewer - I know the conversation has gone on a bit since they featured.

Does anyone know when Thomas Hedges (b1801) died?  Eden & a brood of young Hedges & Davis grandchildren are in Shere (where her married daughter Eden Tickner lived) in 1861.  I do not know when Eden was widdowed - can any Hedges researcher help me please?  Maggott

Michelle will need to do one more post before she will be able to receive (and send I think) private messages. 3 posts are required to activate the PM system.  Only one more required Michelle, doesn't need to be any more than just one word, even just a smiley, then PMs will be set to send and receive.

Hi Joyce & thank you for your message.

Yup, those are 'my' Hedges - Eden & John Tickner were my 4x grandparents.  I'm more or less OK from them on, but I'm really stumped by Thomas Hedges' antecedents.  I've learned that Thomas, William & Job were siblings, but before that it seems a bit conjectural.

l'm also still trying to trace Eden Hedges' parents.  She was the daughter of John & Elizabeth Brewer, but who & where & when....  Any ideas  very welcome

Best

Hi there, not sure who asked the question, but My great grandmother was Sarah Jane Lane nee Hedges.  For many years several of us were looking over the Braintree, Essex lot of Hedges, I think it was as they had a Joseph and several other members who matched.  We could never find our Sarah Jane until the 1851 Census came into vogue on the net and there she was  at Ware Hertford, with the rest of her family.  Then in the 1871 census, they decided on a name change and became BIRD.  this was picked up by another of my first cousins wives who very cleverly took all the christian names without a surname in the 1871 census and the whole family showed up as BIRD.  I wouldn't know why this was.  Maybe could have been his mothers maiden name.Elizabeth the daughter was blind, so maybe was trying to keep her out of the workhouse. Don't know.  Anyway Sarah Jane Hedges married my Great Grandfather who was born in 1839, son of Charles Lane and Mary Ann Crane.  Sarah was his second wife, he had been married before with a daughter Martha. who was born in Colchester in 1865.
Joseph Crane Lane was in the first Royal Scots for 20 years 1861 to 1881.  Sarah Jane HEDGES and all the 9 children were on all posts with him.. They had children born in Scotland, Ireland and England. She was a Tailoress.  My grandfather Joseph Henry LANE was born at Fort George, Inverness, Scotland, in 1875. Off hand Sarah and Joseph were married in 1872 but down in Essex.
I haven't got past c1818 for the birth of Joseph HEDGES, but once saw a birth of a Elizabeth in Ely in Cambridge who I wondered if she had been his sister.  Now this is the family for Joseph and Emily Linton.
Joseph HEDGES c1818 Cambridge? (sawyer)
married Emily Linton 24 Sep;t 1838 All Saints & Saint John, Hertford, Hertford, Eng. Husbands father William HEDGES.His wife Emily LINTON c1815 christened 8 October 1815, All Saints, St John, Hertford, Hertford. Father Thomas LINTON

Isabella was born 27 Oct 1854, Ware, Hertfod.  I have ten children for them.

Now this is the important part.  I have the death cert for Joseph Hedges BIRD, 1886 aged 69,  Informant was his son in law Joseph LANE my GT GF. He died of Bronchitis.  Died at looks like Picketts Yard, Brentwood. Reg Dist, Billericay. County of Essex. I have Emily his wifes death cert as well.  they were both BIRD at death. She died 7 August 1885. Cancer

Henry Mathew HEDGES ch 10 Aug 1851
Emily HEDGES  ch21 FEb 1847 Hertford married 1868 to John BERRY

Sarah Jane HEDGES 1854, married Joseph Crane LANE, 1sdt Royal Scots.  On Josephs death,  Sarah was a widow at age 42, her  2nd husband at the age of 79 was David Theobold.

I have only just registered on here so I’m not sure how this works. But I may have some information on the hedges family, depending on what you are looking for. Elias Hedges, Elijahs younger brother was my great grandfather

Hi, I have just registered to roots so I hope this works. Maisie Hedges was my Mother. Elijha and Charlotte were my Grandparents. Please let me know if you have any info about this part of the Hedges family

Hi

I'm after information about the Hedges family. I don't know if they are the same Hedges family or not though.

I have Elijah Hedges and possibly Charlotte Bibby whose children were Olive Hedges, Victor Hedges, Elijah Hedges, Amy Hedges, Maisie Hedges and Lily Hedges.

Thanks
Emma
