Hi all
I would just like to pass on, the Cumbria Archive service at Carlisle Record office have been really helpful in obtaining me medical records for my ggg grandma who died in Garlands in 1889. it cost me £13 for 5 pages from the hospital books and they are really fasinating, so any one who is also trying to trace relatives who were in there its well worth having a go.

Hi Cass. The Garlands are still there but have been converted to a high end apartment block and the the grounds into a housing estate and rugby club. If you google parklands carlisle on the maps you should get to it. The previous inmates are now largely "in the community" but even up to recently they looked after alzeimers etc - grandfather ended up there after setting fire to his bed at home. I remember visiting him and cutting his finger nails for him when, in a very loud voice cos he was shell deafened during WW1, he said "They're all daft in here you know!". Altough it is in Carlisle , grandad was from Workington so it obviously had a wide catchment area in 1969.

i found my relative on the 1871 and 1881 census as being in Garlands, so i then contacted cumbria archive service to see if any records were held, and as i said previously it turned out to be successful.
