I think Mount Ruby is a house or estate name, rather than a place name.

It's mentioned on a few websites... e.g.

 http://www.failteromhat.com/lewis/mallow.htm
 http://www.libraryireland.com/topog/subsj.php

It may be marked on the old OSI maps - see : Mallow (http://ims0.osiemaps.ie/website/publicviewer/main.aspx#V1,555882,598539,6)  (click the Historic or Historic BW options)

hi Shane

I thought is was a house/estate name too.

The reason i'm checking the name out is one of my relatives told me my grandfather was born in mount ruby, mallow in 1908?

I will check out your kind information tomorrow.

Thank you

As Shane said it is Mount Ruby House Mallow. It was built in the 1700s by Thomas Ruby (all from a google search). If your grandfather was born there in 1908 he should be traceable on the 1911 census www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

I have not found the exact location of Mount Ruby House, but believe I have found out the possible townland it was located in, and the primary resident of the house between about 1905 and  1911.

Guy's Almanac of Cork 1907 shows a Justice of the peace at the address :

Major John Creagh , Mount Ruby, Mallow appointed 1905.

A Major John Creagh J.P., presumably the same person and possibly still at  the same address, is listed on the 1911 census in the townland of Annabella in the Civil Parish of Mallow.

Creagh Household, Annabella (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Mallow/Annabella/430309/)

House names are not mentioned on the census, but it is one of the large houses in the townland with 12 rooms and 10 windows at front of house. Major Creagh is also listed as the owner of a gate house and another property in the same townland... so it sounds like a reasonable possibility for MountRuby House.

here's a list of the other occupants in the same townland : Annabella townland 1911 occupants (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Mallow/Annabella/)

The various Guy's directories are available on the Cork Library Website at : http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/places/streetandtradedirectories/

Hi Shane

Thank you for looking up the information on "mount ruby".  I checked the osi maps and can't find it.

But your information makes things a little clearer.

I presume now that my G Grandfather/ G Grandmother worked there. They are not listed as residents in mallow but how found them in rathclare, buttevant.  But still have been told my grandfather was definately born at mount ruby.

The townland of Annabella is just to the west of Mallow town on the maps, but I dont see any  house named Mount Ruby there...

Mount ruby is just outside mallow on the Killarney road,(known as the navigation road)
It is near the local racecourse (cork racecourse mallow )
Also near an area known as ferville.
