Hello all…
For those of us with Nottinghamshire interests the Gale Digital Newspapers have now added part two (thanks to Stan in the Common Room for the update) and we now have the Nottinghamshire Guardian which was weekly newspaper – coverage = Jan 04, 1849 - Dec 29, 1900.
I have already found some useful information for my lines.
So have your library cards ready….

Nottinghamshire library system no longer uses Gale newspapers. I was informed it was too expensive, not enough people were using it and other options were available.
-
Hi Larkspur,
That's odd as I've been using it today though the library system here's a link:

It won't accept my card number, never had that problem in the past.
-
I'm not having any problems with it, I know that they changed something on their system earlier this year and I had to re-find it. Have you tried the link that I put in my last post.
-
Yes I did use your link. I have a couple of books to return so I'll have a word with the library to see if they can sort the problem.
-
OK Jay,
Let me know what they say.
Wendy

Tried your link,Wendy, says "your entry was not recognised as valid, access denied".
I asked in my local, very small library, what had happened. They asked further up the library line and I then had a note from ?? saying the Nottinghamshire library system was no longer using the site. Citing the above reasons. Shame I didn't keep the note I could have scanned it in...

I have just had an online conversation with a guy called Dan at Nottinghamshire library, this is it.
ME-Why can I no longer access infotrac.galegroup.com from my home computer using my library card ? Thank you
Welcome to Nottinghamshire Ask Libraries Service. We will be with you shortly
Librarian 'Dan' has joined the session.
Hello there. Is it Newsbank that you're trying to access?
ME-Yes the old newspapers
DAN-We no longer subscribe to that service. We do have the access to the Bristish Newapaper Archive, which has records of the Nottingham Post and other local newspapers.
ME _Is this only available in the library or can I get it at home please?
DAN -Apologies, but it's access from library premises only.
ME- Many thanks f or your help.
DAN -My pleasure. Have a good day.

I saw British Newspapers were only accessible from the library, but like Notts Girl said Gale was always accessible from home.
So it looks like it's a cut back from Notts CC. Pity they haven't cut back on all the advertising banners littering lamp posts around here.
-
Just back from the big library in town. I spoke to 2 people on the help desk, neither knew much about this, in fact I had to show one of them how to navigate the library website ???
The conclusion is that due to cut backs the council are no longer subscribing to Gale, just the British Newspapers only accessible from the library computers.
An E mail to my councillor I think.

Hi
OK so something going on here then as I've just been on the Gale site with the link on I gave and can still access it myself, when I've put in my card number it brings up a page with the following on and I just click on the box for 19th Century British Newspapers and use as usual.

Hi All.... :)
Yes , it is really annoying that we can no longer access the Gale/Infotrac newspapers.
It is supposed to be cutbacks and other ways to access them.... hmmm!
I am guessing the reason why Jaywit, Larkspur and me etc can't gain access is because we have Nottinghamshire County Council library cards..... while Wendy has a Nottingham City library card ?
I remember prior to our access to the Gale newspapers , Nottingham City library card holders had access a few years before the rest of Notts. It does feel unfair!
-
Although I live in the county my library card was issued by the city( long story ) and I know previously some issued by the county couldn't access Gale but I could.
So as I can't now it appears that something has happened recently to change this.
-
As I understand it, it is possible to have a library card for any county (this is what I was told by a librarian in Worcs a few years ago) so if your county doesn't have this database, you can apply for a library card to another county (some you can do online without having to actually go there), then you can use that to access the Gale newspapers from home.
Lancashire is one such county, here's a link
http://new.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries-and-archives/libraries/join-a-library.aspx
That's what I do,
hth,
Lisa
