Title: John Cockerell born 1846 Camberwell
Post by: meadowbank on Saturday 29 May 10 16:54 BST (UK)
I'm trying to find out about John Cockerell, born Jan-Mar 1846 in Camberwell, London.

He was closely related to, and seems to have worked for, George J Cockerell & Co, one of the biggest coal merchants of the Victorian era - coal merchants to the royal family, no less.  I think George Joseph Cockerell (1811-1887) was his uncle, and his father was John Brand Cockerell (1814-1880).

An exact date of birth would be great, as would contact from any other Cockerell descendants/researchers!

Do you have him in the censuses?

Can't find him in 1881, and don't have access to the others at present.

However, I have done a newspaper search which has given a few pointers, eg he married a Jessie Green on 25 April 1872 at St Michael's, Chester Square.  And quite a few business adverts relating to the coal business.

The other thing is that he was quite a sportsman in the 1860s, notably as an athlete with Brixton Athletic Club; he also played football.

Nothing beyond that, unfortunately.

By 1881 Ellen is a widow, visiting the De Jersey family at 8 Dalberg Road, Brixton. I think this may be her daughter Ellen married to John H De Jersey. Jessie Cockerell and Catherine Field are also there

From freebmd - Marriage Edmonton June 1876 3a 245
John Horman De Jersey
Brides - Ellen Catherine Cockerell or Rose Rogers

Catherine Field, sister in law, is with them on all the other censuses so it would seem to be correct Wozzle  :)

I think for Sarah Tanner it says Aunt in law  :-\

Thanks everyone for all that help, it gives me a lot of excellent information.

Any clues as to where I could find John's date of birth? Or date of death?

Yes, Wozzle, it was the son.

Anyway, thanks Valda, I managed to find the father's death in a newspaper intimation (Pall Mall Gazette), it was 10 April 1880 to be precise.

As for the ones in Octagon Cottage, that's the grandfather, but it seems there must have been another grandson called John, given the disparity in ages!

Hi

From Google Books

British Settlers in Natal 1824-1857: A Biographical Register (Cadle-coventry)‎ - Page 130

'Cockerell had at least two brothers who were coal merchants in London. One, John
Brand, in 1878 was of Perfect Wharf, Earl Street, Blackfriars. ...'

Yes, that was one of the few definites I had - see my earlier post. He married Jessie Green on 25 April 1872 at St Michael's, Chester Square, and had the good grace to put a note in the local paper.
