Title: Ronquete family in Louisiana
Post by: cimbrio on Saturday 29 May 10 23:38 BST (UK)
Barely an hour ago I've just found out that a distant relative of mine emigrated to America. I thought it would have been Latin America, as most Spaniards in the 19th cebntury went to Spanish-speaking countries. However, my great-grandfather's cousin Elias Ronquete Ben (b. 1856 in Noia [or Noya], Spain) emigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana.

I had no idea about this bit of my family. I've found a couple of webpages where it says he married a woman called Virginia Ackerman (I suppose of German origin), and had four children called Elías (1893-1972), Leo (b. 1894), Ramon (1896-1971) and Genevieve Cramer (1903-1992). I'd love to know more about them, if they married and had children. I'd also love to know if anyone can have a look at Elias Sr. and see if he's on any passenger list and if he was traveling withy anyone, if indeed it's the Elias in my family (just to confirm) and any other details I might learn about him.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Cimbrio :)

A Ramon Ronquete married Lydia M Potier on October 30, 1923 in New Orleans.
Lydia daughter of  (Theodore) Raoul Potier born January 3, 1864 and who married twice, first to Marie Emilie Tournade on August 16, 1881 in New Orleans. She died March 21, 1891. However, looking back at the 1930 census the age would be out for Lydia and she would have been another 10 years older !! Yet I cannot see another Ramon and Lydia to fit the bill.  So one to bear in mind for the moment.  ???

Erato & Dettori28, thanks ever so much for your fantastic help! This is truly amazing, that in 24 hours or less I've learnt so much about this branch of the family.

Elías Ronquete Sr. was indeed born in 1856 in Noia, in the province of La Coruña, Spain. His parents were Casimiro Ronquete and Manuela de Ben (whose brother José was the one Elías went to live with in New Orleans); Casimiro was the head of the telegraph office in Noia, a small fishing town on the Galician coast. They had four children: Dolores (Elias's sister, who died of TB in 1878), Elías, Isidoro (also died of TB in 1879) and Agapito, who's descendants still live in the area today.

Don't worry about finding out about Lydia's parents... But I'd love to find out if she and Ramón had any children, because if they didn't it seems unlikely that there are any living descendants of the Ronquetes in Louisiana. Elías Jr. died in 1972, single, iof a heart attack after being rushed to hospital after an accidental gunshot in his leg. He was survived by his sister, Miss Genevieve Ronquete (I think her middle name might be Carmen).

I'd love to find out when Elías Sr. passed away, is it possible to find that out?

Thanks again for your enormous help and kindness.

Elias Ronquete was described as a nephew on the 1880 Census for Joseph De Ben and Ines.
Just incase it helps you unravel a little more.
Joseph Jose Antonio DeBen 25 Nov 1839 Spain and Maria Inez Fernandez 21 Feb 1847
in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1870 Census New Orleans Ward 6, Orleans, Louisiana

Jose Ant Deben 30 Retail Dealer in Tob
Ines Deben 21
Mary Ines Deben 1
Adeline Allison 15 Domestic Servant
Marie Pierre 24 Domestic Servant

The nearest we have for the death of Elias Snr is between 1910 - 1920, he does not appear to be listed in Louisiana Death Records.
If that is Ramon and Lydia and 1885 was the true birth date perhaps there were no children !!
The only suggestion maybe to try and contact a library for further information or perhaps ask a RAOGK volunteer in Orleans to give direction on where to go next.

Dettori, thanks once again for your thorough research.

Are the dates on your second-to-last post birthdates? María Inés was born in New Orleans I see, but I imagine her paternal family came from Spain too.

I don't think José was French, it must be a mistake. Next week I'm going to the church archives in Santiago de Compostela and I'll try and find his birth certificate. His sister Manuela, Elias's mother, was married in Noia in 1855, implying she came from there, and so would her brother I imagine. Plus, de Ben is a fairly common surname in the area and I have her and José's parents as Carlos Mariano de Ben and Cipriana Martínez.

Do you know when José and Inés may have married?

Thanks!

I got the document Dettori, thank you very much!

This is simply wonderful. I'll no doubt surprise my family when I tell them about the de Ben family. Is there any way of finding out about MAría Ines's parents, and when she and José de Ben passed away?

It's so sad to think that Elia's mother Manuela, who died in 1900, probably never saw her son again after he left for America. Maybe her brother visited on one of his trips to Europe (the area of Noya was very commercial and many foreigners settled there, where commerce was king). In fact the surname Ronquete isn't even Spanmish originally, but our common ancestor settled there in the late 18th century.

As for de Ben, it's a Galician surname which means "of Good"; rather nice I think :)

Nothing in Louisiana Marriages 1816-1906 that I can see for him. Birth of first child looks to be 1869.
Sometimes the dates on marriage and immigration can vary - according to the 1900 Census which gives this information. He married in 1874 but the chidren's dates of birth would'nt confirm that.

Thanks a lot Dettori, and thanks for the documents you've sent, I'll try to print them at home next week.

I'm amazed, I think there might not be any living Ronquetes in New Orleans, but I wonder if there are any De Bens around? One of the daughters I see married a man called George Dynoodt...

I'm going to try and find in the churhc arcihves the birth entry of Salvador Fernández and where his family comes from. I've found that Caroline Baldwin's maternal family are Genoese and French possibly. Fernandez is such a common name however.

I wonder if they know in Noya about their compatriots who fought in the US Civil War!

If you find anything else at all I'd love to find out more :)

Dettori, thanks so much for your precious help. I was out meeting some friends but every time I open my mail there's more and great news!

That piece about the death of Mary & George Degroodt dying on the same day is veeeery fishy, either it's a mistake, or.. would sound like they were killed... murder or accident... Hmmm. I'll try to see what "the little grey cells" tell me.

I'm for the night, will try to find out more about them.

Thanks once again!

Hello Cimbrio.

Pleased to have been of some help. Quite interesting families and nationalities. Surely alot more to find out - the family Duben were obviously into cigars and tobacco and had what looks to be their own company.  So many of the male offspring were tobacco salesmen.  This could also have brought about the connection to the Deynoodt family who seem to be in the same business.  It depends how deeply you want to investigate but I am sure you could find wills of the families and gain alot more info.
(Both families are transcribed with a variation of spellings - many more Duben seem to be in Louisiana - might there be another family connection  ???)
Regards.  ;D

I'm certainly going to try to trace living descendants of the De Ben/Deben/Duben today in the area. With so many children I should imagine so.

I'm about to go to class now, but I'm taking the rootschat webpage open to have a look at if the class gets too boring  ;D

I was wondering, is it possible to know the maiden name of (Jean/Juan) Salvador De Ben's wife Marie/Mary, and when they got married?

Best regards Dettori28! Thanks!

Haha Dettori28! You're hooked as well!

I'm trying to finish an essay I've got to give in before tomorrow evening, but today I transcribed all the info onto my family tree. Can you believe it's even inspired me to write a short story about it all? However, in my story the young immigrant turns up discontent with his life in New Orleans, and chooses to return home, leaving practically everything behind in America. OK, all fantasy, but based on fact!

Haven't found the marriage between Salvador and Marie. I'm going to write a post on my blog, looking for living descendants of the De Ben family today.

Am I right, it's impossible to find out when Elías Sr passed away between 1910 and 1920?

Thanks so much for your help!

No cannot find any death records, other than those I've already posted.  RAOGK sometimes have volunteers who can help, one on this link for Orleans says "I am very willing to offer consultation and direction to those seeking genealogical / historical info in this area"

http://www.raogk.org/louisian.htm

Could try looking up the nearest library and e-mail to see if they will do you a "look-up". According to reply 37, the 1910 Census said they had been married 12 years - so looks to be 1898

Marie Deynoodt- eldest daughter of Joseph Deynoodt married to Judge Henry Renshaw.

Henry Renshaw, Judge of the First City Court in New Orleans, was born in March 14, 1845, from the marriage of Henry Renshaw with Miss Eliza Ann Rebecca White.  Henry Renshaw (Sr.) was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Sept. 22, 1812, and in early manhood went to New Orleans to make it his home and became one of its prominent merchants. The mother of Judge Renshaw was a native of Louisiana, born at Lake Concordia, March 21, 1819.  Henry Renshaw, was educated in New Orleans, and at Pass Christian, Miss., and at the Belmont academy, Nelson county, Va.  He read law in New Orleans in the office of Clarke & Bayne, a firm of lawyers then enjoying an extensive practice.  In Nov 1866, he was admitted to practice by the Supreme Court of Louisiana, but continued the course of study at the Law Department of the University of Louisiana, now Tulane University, where
he graduated in March, 1867.  He became the partner of the gentlemen in whose office he had been a law student.  In 1905 he was appointed by Gov. Newton C. Blanchard as judge to fill a vacancy on the bench of the First City Court in New Orleans.  He was elected to succeed himself in this office in 1908, and again in 1912.  He acceptably served as a member of the court and won the reputation of an able jurist.Dec. 20, 1876, Judge Renshaw married Marie Eugenie Deynoodt, a native of New Orleans, and eldest daughter born from the marriage of Joseph
Deynoodt with Miss Solidelle Le Gardeur de Tilly, a native of New Orleans.
Joseph Deynoodt was born in Ghent, Belgium, and was for some time Belgian
consul in New Orleans, but afterwards engaged in sugar culture in Louisiana.  Judge Renshaw was a member of the Louisiana Historical society, and manifests great interest in the work to which that society was devoted.  Papers from his pen appear in the publications of that society.  He was possessed with literary tastes and and the local press had published compositions by him in prose and verse.  In religion he was a Roman Catholic.  He was a member of the Catholic Alumni Sodality.

Hello all,

I've still got a few more doubts, although the Ronquete side seems to come to an abrupt end with the childless deaths of the four Ronquete children born in New Orleans. However I'd like to know about their mother, Virginia A. Ackerman; she seems to have been born in Feb. 1867 in Louisiana; her mother was from Louisiana but the father is listed as being from Illinois I think. I haven't been able to find her parents name nor her date of death.

As for her son Ramon (1896-1971), married Lydia Potier, can we safely assume they remained childless?

Can anyone help?

Thank you so much!

We could'nt really assume that they had no children, we only know that in reply 6 referring to 1930 Census, they had only been married a few years.

Perhaps if you contact RAOGK volunteer in St Tammy and see if they can locate the Obituary for Ramon who died May 1971 then that may give details of any living relatives. They may also be able to help you with the marriage record for the couple or Tombstone photograph.  A couple of options which may give further information.

Just reading through the thread, it would appear Erato in reply 13 gives the birth of Virginia and her parents names. Erato also replied in 13/14/15 with what details were available for a possible scenerio for the Ackerman families. Census records can be a little "sketchy" back then but there does'nt but seem any other information to help. There are a couple of RAOGK volunteers in Orleans, perhaps they may be able to help you further.

Thank you very much Sandra!

I must have missed the other post when I re-read all of them yesterday.

Thank you for the tips, I'm going to check the website and see what I can come up with.

Just one question, on Virginia's information you've posted, on the mother's name, would Victorine Hermana mean Hermana is Victorine's maiden name, or middle name? I'd like to trace back the Ackerman line (though not related to me in fact), to find out where they came from originally (I presume a German-speaking country).

Title: Re: Ronquete family in Louisiana
Post by: *Sandra* on Sunday 22 August 10 21:57 BST (UK)
Hermana could be either according to what I looked up - I tried searching as a surname but found nothing  :(

I looked up those surnames as well because if that is Virginia on the 1880 Census she was Eckerman and that would indicate "Sweden"

Surprisingly Ackerman is "English" if you read this

http://www.rootschat.com/links/09kh/

Confusing  ::)
Title: Re: Ronquete family in Louisiana
Post by: cimbrio on Sunday 22 August 10 22:13 BST (UK)
Yes, it is rather confusing...

I've tried to find out more about her parents but nothing; Louis Ackerman (or Eckerman) was from Illinois, but his wife Victorine was from Louisiana; I presume that since Virginia was born in Louisiana, her parents married there.

There is this older post about Virginia (it might not be her though):

1880 census - District 5, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana

Harris, Henry, Jr., father, 40, accountant, b. Louisiana, parents b. England
Matilda, wife, 23, keeps house, b. Louisiana, parents b. Louisiana
Eckerman, Virginia, 14, step-daughter, at home, b. Louisiana, father b. Illinois, mother b. Louisiana
Harris, Leona, daughter, 4, b. Louisiana
Harris, Isidor, son, 1, b. Louisiana

However, Henry Harris is not her father but step-father. As Matilda is positively NOT her mother, I can only presume Virginia's father died, then her mother remarried Henry Harris and when she died he married Matilda listed above. Is there any way of proving this?

(PS: The Ackermans aren't directly related to me, just Virginia's children and husband, I don't want you Sandra to waste your time on this if you don't want to; you and the other users have been terribly helpful so far!)

I think Erato would do a very detailed search on Virginia at the time.  I also went through the Census records searching trying to unravel the mystery at the time and today have spent odd sessions but still got no further forward.  Sad as it is to say this may remain a proverbial brick wall - although I do hope I am wrong.  :(

Don't worry, thanks anyway *Sandra*.

What I still can't find is Elias Sr. Ronquete's death date; I've seen the surname spelt so many times that God knows how they would type it in on the search machines: Bronquette, Ronquette, Ronguet... ???

Tomorrow I'm going to visit one of my mum's aunt. We've recently found out that her next-door neighbour is related to us (though we have to trace our common ancestry back to the 18th century).

Thank you very much for your help! :)

Louisiana Deaths should cover 1850-1875; 1894-1954 - I don't suppose everyone is listed annd never founnd Elias.  That might be a question you could ask if you get a good response from RAOGK. Sorry  :o

Hello all, and happy new year! I hope 2011 is an even better year still.

I've been fortunate enough to find the will of Manuel Joaquin de Ben (1773-1851), whose grandson José Antonio de Ben Martínez emigrated to the USA in 1860 and thus founded the American branch of this family originally from Spain. The will is interesting because its fills in some gaps about the family, and in it Manuel Joaquin de Ben mentions his children by his late wife. Among them is a "José Bentura de Ben" [sic] who at the time (december 1851) lives in the "States of America". I would presume they mean the United States, and that he having emigrated there would have managed to get his nephew José Antonio to go and live there as well. I would like to know if it's possible to find out anything about José Bentura/José Ventura (spellings of the name vary, as does that of the last name, Deben/de Ben).

Thank you!

I found him with two sons (presumably) living in New Orleans; they own three slaves, all under 15 years of age (two mulatos and one black slave). SHOCKING! I never expected this. But no trace of their mother... The children are called Francis and Manuel, and all were born in Spain, so they emigrated to America between 1830 and 1850. Can anyone trace their date of arrival, roughly?

Best regards!

Muchas gracias *Sandra*  :o Feliz año nuevo a ti también  ::)

This is what I know about them:
José Ventura de Ben (Ventura is the correct spelling, it appears as Bentura in his father's will in 1851, but he's called Jose in the other documents I've seen on pilot.familysearch.com) was born I think around 1797-1799; his parents married in 1796, I know that for a fact, and he was their firstborn. In the US 1850 census he is listed as being 51 so c. 1799.

In the same census of 1850, Francis (or Francisco) de Ben and Manuel de Ben (presumably his sons) are living with him, and they are 25 and 18 respectively. I've found Manuel Deben (slight alteration of the last name) being 34 roughly in 1865, when he took part in the American Civil War, on the Confederate side. I haven't found out if he died during the war, I don't think he did. His cousin José Antonio de Ben (emigrated in 1860) also took part in the war.

Both Francis and Manuel were born in Spain, which would indicate that they emigrated sometime between 1830 and 1850. I have no idea about their mother or if they had other siblings. Their christening records are kept in Santiago de Compostela, where I'm going in a month. I'll probably be able to find who their mother was, but any more details about them in America (when they died, when José [Ventura] de Ben died, what they did for a living after the war...).

Thank you so much! :)

Su muy bien recibido.

Hmmmm. No es un buen comienzo

This seems to fit with the age on the 1850 Census where Manuel was a Clerk living with Jose and Francis who were both Gardeners.

Oh, that's quite young. So Manuel would have died during the war in fact. Is there any way of telling whether he died because of it?

The death in 1864 would establish his date of birth as 1832, which fits but can only be confirmed in the parish records in Santiago. What about José, Manuel and Francis' father, is there any record of him dying in Louisiana?

Perhaps you've already seen it but in this link here
(http://www.latinamericanstudies.org/civil-war-cubans/cazadores.htm) it says there's a Manuel Deben who took part in the war:

Deben, Manuel    Private    2    34    Spain    Grocer

The 34 may be a mistake, because the other facts fit; he's described as a clerk in 1850, so he wasn't in a particular trade and may have turned from clerk to grocer...

Gracias *Sandra* :)

I wonder if there was 2 possible Manuel De Ben.  ???
The 1860 Census shows one age 33 years (so born 1827 Spain) - unfortunately no image for you to see on this link.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0b27/

This is what it says:- 1860 Algiers, Orleans, Louisiana

Manuel Deben 33 Born about 1827 Spain. grocer. Value of  real - estate $500 Value of personal estate $500
Joseph Abares 40 Born Spain Clerk
Ramon Cuberos 30 Born Spain. Labourer
Henry Rainer 48 Born Hanover. Labourer
John Stebbins 28 Born Bavaria. Labourer

Also found a US Tax Assessment List for 1863 for Manuel Deben - Retail dealer in liquor. That could be the grocer.,

Only 1 Manuel listed in US Civil War Soldiers and American Civil War Soldiers - which is the info you already have on the site above.

Can also see a Jose Deben enlisted as a private in the same - Company 2, Cazadores Esp Infantry Regiment Louisiana. (Wonder if that could be a brother of Manueal and Francis  ???) but I have'nt seen a Francis listed.

Can also see a family tree Jose Manuel Deben born 1799 Spain  (no wife) which is giving the same 1840 Census record as a source. 2 children listed Joseph Jose Antonio Deben 1839 - 1900 and Manuel 1840 -
Jose Antonio Deben 1839 could be the one listed in US Civil War Soldiers - 5 Regiment European Brigade (Spanish Regiment), Louisiana Militia. The tree is a little mixed up with information.

Still looking.  ;)

ADDED:- Have just quickly read through what we had before and the Jose Antonio Deben I mentioned above, we covered in reply 20.

Have you ever come across reference to the "De Ben Tomb, Metairie Cem., New Orleans, La"  ???

I am quickly scanning through what we had before but don't think I've seen it mentioned but it looks as if that is where some of your De Ben family are buried.

No, no idea! Is that like a family plot?

I'm making myself a rough family tree to see where all the names fit; if you want to have a look at the tree I can send you via PVT message the link to my tree and that way you can jump from one name to another easily.

Jose Antonio de Ben (b.25/10/1839 in Noya, Spain) is the one that emigrated to LA in 1860. I know he fought in the war, we found that on this same thread. But no idea about the double Manuel thing, I'll keep on checking the tree, see where he fits in.

Gracias!

Joseph Antonio Deben 1839 had a son John Salvador Deben born 1871. John S Deben married Marie L and they had a son Norman in 1909 (replies 37/39/40/41.

Norman married Anita Mary Hilary born 13 Nov 1910 New Orleans. They had 3 children. If you go to the link below it mentions the burial of Norman - De Ben tomb, Metairie Cem., New Orleans, La. The tree info was last worked on 15 Aug 2010 so the e-mail link to the contributor may still work.  Could be worth a try to contact Deben family  ???

Reference Norman Deben 1909 above who had a son Norman Joseph Deben Born: 22 Jan 1938 Died: 25 Sep 2003

The Obituiary for the son was in the Times PICAYUNE in September 2003 - perhaps you might be able to locate a copy of that also.

I've contacted the author of the family tree you pointed out before.

I haven't been able to find where to place the Manuel de Ben born in 1827; he may not be related for all I know. Hmm...

I remember seeing a sort of registration card for José Antonio de Ben (b.1839) when he faught in the civil war. Might there not be a similar thing for Manuel which might shed some light as to when he was born, and more importantly, where he came from? I am so anxious now to visit the church archives! I bet there are more relatives, though the question still remains, why did José Ventura de Ben and his sons emigrate to Louisiana? Emigration was very common in the region of Galicia right until well into the 20th century. But most people emigrated to Latin America because of the language barriers in the States. Why then would he go to Louisiana? I see it was very important for the family, since his nephew José Antonio followed in his uncle's footsteps, and another generation later Elías Ronquete emigrated to the same place as well...

Hi Cimbrio,

It is another mystery at the moment -  they could well be -  one and the same - the age being slightly out and the occupation could well have changed. Census records only show one option for both 1850 and 1860 - tried a few spelling variations but nothing.
I've tried to look for more on the military history but cannot see anything else.
No trace of Jose or Francis after 1850 either.

Hit the proverbial brick wall I'm afraid.  :(

Sandra

Sandra, thanks very much for trying so hard anyway. Yes, Francis and José are a big mystery. They may have gone back to Spain for all I know, but Manuel may have stayed on and died during the war. I'm just guessing...

Are there no passenger manifestos to check passenger lists? The date of arrival may help to discover why they went to America in the first place.

I'll keep you posted if I find anything in the church archives in a couple of weeks.

Best regards,

CIMBRIO

Sorry, forgot to say - I did try passenger lists but again there was absoloutely nothing showing.  Always a lack of passenger lists for the earlier time frame which is frustrating.  Hope you have better luck at the archives.

I've logged on my old account on ancestry (for which I have no credit left) and there is a reference to a Jose de Bon [Jose Deben] in the 1840 Federal census in Orleans, LA. I would presume it's Jose [Ventura] de Ben (b.1799), which implies he emigrated in 1840 or before. If anyone has access to this information can you please check for any relatives living with him, or other information (job, when he emigrated, etc.).

Thanks! :)

The 1840 Census is very vague I'm afraid and does not give much detail

Total Free White Persons: 2

Total All Persons - Free White.    Free Colored.   Slaves: 2

The earliest entry I saw was 1820

Joseph Debon Township: Iberville County: Iberville State: Louisiana

Enumeration Date: August 7, 1820

Free White Males -          Under 10:   2
Free White Males -         16 thru 25:  2

¡Buenos días Sandra, y muchas gracias!

The difference of place of residence makes me question whether it is really my relative. Does the census include any names at all, apart from Jose Debon/De Ben? Since I don't have a name for his wife yet I'll be able to check it in the archives at the end of the month. Do you think this is the same Jose Debon as in the 1850 census entry?

Hello Cimbrio,

I'm afraid thats all the detail that is given.  If Jose was born around 1799 then he would in the 40 - 49 age group which means the other entry, if it is his wife was between 50 - 59 (a little older)
If the 2 sons were always with Jose then they don't appear on the 1840 in Tunisburg - one should be 15 years old and one of 8 years and it is not quoting anyone in that age group.  I could not be totally sure 1840 was the same person as 1850 shows.

The 1820 Census was just to show the earliest entry for Deben/Debon

Thanks Sandra; I don't think that someone could go back and forth to America and Europe, since his children were born in Spain, as we can see in the 1850 census. I'll have a look at the archives and I'll let you know what I come up with.

Thanks for checking the details out! Have a nice day!

Sandra, a few developments, I thought you ought to be informed as you've helped me so much.

I've found a document dated 9th May 1854, wherein Rosa de Ares, widowed wife of Benito de Ben, makes a declaration before the notary of the village of Puerto del Son (province of La Coruña, NW Spain). Incidentally, the notary is her late husband's nephew.

In the document, she declares that she is living with her spinster daughter, Rosa de Ben Ares, and that she used to live with her son Juan, who has lately married. She also says that the son she's living with now, Francisco, had emigrated abroad in early 1841 with his cousin Jose de Ben (presumably Jose Ventura de Ben, mentioned in the 1850 US census), with whom Francisco had lived and worked, and that Francisco returned home in July 1853 (the year before the document was written). There's no mention of what happened to Jose after 1850, nor who the third person mentioned in the 1850 census is, Manuel. I'm going to the archives soon, perhaps I'll find more information there. She mentions she is living thanks to the money her husband made in New Orleans.

Anyway, that fills in a few blank gaps, but still there are some questions to be answered.

Best regards!

Buenas tardes Cimbrio,

Que es una buena noticia.  Bien hecho.

Perhaps it also indicates that Jose De Ben on the 1840 was not your Jose if they immigrated 1841 - that was the Tunisburg Census with just age groups on it.

Mejor de las suertes.
