I'm looking for any information regarding the Offord's of King's Lynn. Florence Eliza Offord was born 20 december 1893 to George Offord and Mildred Emma Payne. Does anyone know any information regarding these people?
-
Hullo and welcome to rootschat :)
If you look for them on the various census before and after their marriage that would give you a good start with info.
the 1881 census can be searched free at familysearch site. For the other census you could ask for lookups- sorry I don't have access to these myself.
If you know Offord's occupation and where he lived you may be able to find him in old Directories[ University of Leicester has them online for free searching]
Let us know how you get on.

Thank you Ivan. Florence was my grandmother's mother and wasnt talked about very much as all her children had different fathers. Thank you so much

There is a Tree on Ancestry that is a bit " mucked up".
They have 2 wives for George but the other Wife Laura they mention is still with her George in the 1901 Census.
We know your George was with Minnie in 1901.
Therefore they DONT have your George in the 1891 Census.
Both Georges have different occp and both have a daughter Florence.
Do you have Census access?
-
I cant find George pre 1901 Census conclusively.
As the 1901 Census just has POB as Norfolk its not much help.
I looked for a Marriage under all combos, Mildred/Minnie Payne etc but the only one I could find was not til 1897 with a George Offord as a possible Spouse;
Marriage;
George OFFORD, March 1897, Lambeth, 1d 432
On the same page is Minnie PAYNE
Now I realise this is after Florences Birth Reg;
Birth Reg;
Florence Eliza OFFORD, March 1894, Kings' L, 4b 333
And this is her Christening;
Christening, Extracted Record from www.freereg.org.uk
Florence Eliza OFFORD,
17 January 1894, All Saints, South Lynn, Norfolk
Father GEORGE, Labourer, living at Victoria Street
Mother MILDRED EMMA
Does your Aunty have the Marriage Cert of George ( either the one I posted or another) or Birth Cert of Florence?
Trish :)
-
Hello Kirstie
Further to Trish’s posting, there is a record for a marriage of George Offord and Minnie Payne on 17 January 1897 at St Mary at Lambeth, London.
George was aged 30 and a Widower. His occupation was given as Carman and his father is shown as Robert Offord who was also a Carman.
Minnie was aged 24 and a Spinster. Her father was Joseph Payne who was a Labourer.
At the date of the marriage George and Minnie were both living at 31 Broad Street. One witness was George Whitehead, the other witness name is not very clear!
So it seems that Florence was born before her parents were married unless she was the daughter of George’s first wife.
Regards
Ivan

Thank you Ivan ;D

Still cant find any of them pre 1901 ::)
-
Need help please ;)
The only possible Father Robert, Carman , for George I can find is;
Robert OFFORD, born c 1837, Sudbury, Suffolk.
1881 Census he is a Coachman in Lewisham, London
RG11/735/107/39
1901 he is in Jarrow, Durham, Coachman, born Long Melford, Suffolk.
Wife Lucy is there and children that are not on the 1881 Census !!
RG13/4742/157/19
We are they all 1891?
Did he marry Lucy abt 1881 and have only those children?
Is he and possibly Lucy the Parent/Parents of George born c 1865, Norfolk?
Help I'm stuck and and/or completely off track with this Family ::)

Hello Kirstie
Getting these was a bit of a struggle although they seem be worth following up:

Payne, Charles*, Head, Married, 37, Labourer (G), born Bournemouth, Hampshire
Payne, Caroline, Wife, Married, 40, born London, Middlesex
Payne, Alice, Daughter, Single, 12, born Ryde, Isle of Wight, Hampshire

Jones, George, Traveller, Single, 50, Labourer (G) born Durham
RG11 Piece 1098 Folio 132 Page 58
(*Note: I believe that the name “Charles” has been incorrectly entered on the census return. This seems to be the same family as 1871 and 1891)
1891 census
18, Caroline Road, Wimbledon
Payne, Lancelot J, Head, Married, 48, Navvy Railway Ballast, born Wimborne, Dorset
Payne, Caroline M, Wife, Married, 50, born Paddington, London
Payne, Fanny Gertrude, Daughter, Single, 20, General Servant, born Bournemouth Hampshire
RG12 Piece 605 Folio 109 Page 75
Marriages 1Q 1866
Lambeth Vol. 1d Page 361
Downing, Elizabeth
Lucas, John
Payne, Lanceet
Salter, Caroline M
Fanny and Ellen Payne feature in the 1911 census (both married by then) and have specific connections with the Offord children Florence and William which leads me to believe that although the marriage record for George and Minnie refers to Minnie’s father as being “Joseph” it seems probable that he was in fact “Lancelot Joseph”.
Just like Trish, I cannot trace definitively George Offord before 1901 although there are possibilities.
Regards
Ivan

Excellent work Ivan ;D
Back tomorrow night to see what can be found on the Offords.
Trish :)
-
Hi Kirstie,
I think if you want to go back with this line any further we need more info;
Where did you get the name Mildred Emma Payne from?
Trish :)
-
The name Mildred Emma Payne was on some information my aunty gave me and said it was Florence's mother. She was definitely married to George Offord and thats as far back as the Offord family line goes as we cant find any information. Thank you everyone for researching this for me.
-
Hi again,
Could you ask your Aunty how she knows Mildred Emma was definitely married to George Offord.
Does she have;
Florences Birth Cert and her Marriage Cert ?.
George and Mildreds Marriage Cert?
If so please put up details including Witnesses.
I am not disputing that Florence was Christened to a George Offord and a Mildred Emma but at this stage we have no evidence that Mildreds maiden name she was Payne.
Minnie can be a abbreviation of Mildred also so they could have had Florence and not married til later.
The census info for Minnie that Ivan posted matches the info for for Minnie OFFORD with George in 1891.
Without a M/C for George it is impossible to find his Father.
The Marrriage info Ivan gave is definitely a possible .
George is a Widower so his Wife may have been alive still in 1893 when Florence was born and he was not free to marry til 1897.
Trish :)

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the help on this topic. I have finally found all the information I wanted and yes, Mildred Emma Payne married George Offord.
-
hello relatives, nice to know there are relatives out there of my Father, other than those i know of being via Margaret Fisher daughter of Florrie and half sister to dad.
he was Leonard William Smith born Offord son of Florence Eliza Smith (Banks, Metz) nee Offord
father unknown. However Florence came to Western Australia with a John Smith in 1924 and dad was registered as a Smith on those records, however cant find a marriage cert for Florrie and John.

Hi Kristie
I’ve just found this thread on the internet.
Florence was my great grandfathers sister. I’m a decendant of William George Offord born 1895
We don’t know much about his father George as we were told that he left Minnie for another woman.
After the marriage breakdown William George was passed to aunts and auncle (not sure which yet).
We don’t know much about Florence and what happened to her.
The family has found a lot about our ancestors and we have some pictures you maybe interested in seeing.
It would be wonderful to swop information.
What I can tel you at the moment is that William George married Gladys Louise Redington who was a wonderful woman. I have a few memories of her as a very young child. William passed away in 1975 and Gladys in 1987. They had three girls and a boy, two of whom are still alive and in their last 80s early 90s. Gwendoline their daughter was my grandmother. She passed away about 15 years ago.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Aoife
