Title: Stephen Parslow
Post by: EmFrank on Monday 14 June 10 04:40 BST (UK)
I am seeking information about Stephen Parslow who was baptised in Nov 1819 in Coaley Gloucestershire. He is not in any UK censuses and I have found a possible person in the US census's in 1880 and 1900 in New York. He is about the right age but only gives birth place as England. This Stephen was married to Elizabeth and were married in about 1850.
Can anyone assist me how to find out if this may the person I am seeking.
Frank (in Australia)

Wow. Thats a great lot of information for me to study. The 1870 census info is a bit of a mystery. It certainly looks like the right couple.
I found an Elizabeth Mosdell baptised in Hampshire England in July 1830, daugher of Edmund and Elizabeth. It seems to match the birth date from the census info and the name of Stephen's son was also Edmund.
I was wondering if it would be worthwhile hetting Stephen's death certificate.
Do the US death records usually give the actual place of birth or just the country, and do they give names of children?
Thanks very much everyone.

I would'nt imagine it would give the names of all the children.  It could all be dependant on who reported the death and what information they were aware of.

I have checked the 1870 census according to the the lead provided by dettori28 and found something interesting. At the bottom of ther page were Stephen Parlow & Elizabeth Parlow (who seemed to be the right people). The visit entry is Alfred Hopbury aged 19 born England, then Anna aged 13 born NY, with a ditto surname. On the next page with the same ditto surnames, were George aged 18, Sarah aged 14, Mary aged 9, Edmund aged 4 & Elizabeth aged 2.
These were all born in NY and of parents from foreign countries.
It is interesting that the last 3 children are identical with Stephen & Elizabeth's children, and it also fits with Elizabeth saying in 1880 that she had 8 children, 5 surviving. I therefore  believe that this is probably a census error and that Anna, George & Sarah + the next 3, should have been Parslows.
Further searching shows that an IGI member has recorded that George Eli Parslow, born Sept 1851, is the son of Elizabeth & Stephen.
This fits with my search very well in that George and Eli were brothers of the Stephen I am looking for. The only problem is that the same IGI member has recorded that Stephen is the son of Daniel & Sarah, which doesnt fit at all. There is a name & address of the IGI member, so I will try & contact him, if he still at the same address.
Thanks everyone for all your help.

Thanks dettori28
This is getting very confusing. Maybe the 1860 census has Stephen wrongly named as George? The George Eli 1852 birth by Stephen & Sarah also looks promising. Can you tell me please where that information came from? I havnt been able to work out how to access old US B, D & M records.

Hello Frank,

If you look at the link on the last reply it shows where the birth details and parents of George Eli came from.

In the earlier reply you talked of a George & Eli being the brothers of the Stephen you were looking for.  So that 1860 entry made me think it was the brother you mentioned  ???

There are no US BMD records as such, each state varies according to what is available.  Reply 1 gives the link I will paste below, it can be very useful to see census and other records and you may find useful.

Thanks for pointing out the connection to me -always something to learn. I know that the 1860 George wasnt Stephen's brother (at least not the one I was looking for) as his brother was then living in UK. The information from George Eli Parslow's death certificate has however added to my belief that this Stephen is the right person. Also I have now made telephone contact with the person who gave the IGI information and he is a descendant of Stephen from New York. It is all now looking extremely promising.
Thanks again for your leads and thanks to Rootschat for making it possible.

Hello Frank,

Pleased to hear you have made contact with a relative.  Took another look at George and Elizabeth (1860) but could see no entries for 1870 so your theory is probably correct. Good luck with the rest of your research  ;)

Just to close off on this I thought you might be interested to know that I followed up on the Alfred Hopkins who was in the 1870 census with the Parslows & found his immigartion record in 1853 and thence his family, so that the Hopkins & Parslow family is as follows:
Elizabeth Mosdell married Charles Hopkins 1850 in Sussex
-   Alfred C born 1951
-   Alice born 1853

Stephen Parslow married Sarah Anne Hagar (about 1850)
-   George Eli born 1852
-   Sarah born circa 1855
-   Anna born circa 1857, married George Saulpaugh

Stephen Parslow married Elizabeth (Hopkins) Mosdell 1860
-   Mary born circa 1861, married .. Hoyt
-   Edmund S born 1866 married 1889 Ida C Ashley
-   Elizabeth born 1868, married Frank Taylor 1890
So all round some great results.

That Bielby family with whom Stephen Parslow was living in Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York in the 1850 census were my relatives.  I think that they were running a boarding house or hotel operation while at the same time the head the head of the household worked in a woolen mill. Stephen's occupation would also suggest employment in a woolen mill.
