Hi,
I'm interested in hearing from anyone researching the family history of Heinrich Christian Auhl who married Sophia Dorothia Bitter in Klemzig Adelaide soon after their arrival on the President Smidt from Bremen Germany in 1848. Heinrich and Sophia went on to have several children and in the 1860's they moved along with a lot of other families over to the Albury/Wodonga area and settled.

Hi Gerry
I have a LANGE connection who married into the AUHL family and a descendent in my branch kindly sent me a family tree of the entire AUHL family.
Rather too much info to go into any detail on this forum.

Hi Essie,
Thanks for the reply.
From my research I believe that Johann Otto AUHL was born at Klemzig in Adelaide on 6th Jan 1849 and married Anna Juliane Pauline Lange either in 1876 or 1878.
I have a direct ancestry line with Johann's Henry Auhl who was born in Adelaide on 2nd Jul 1851 he married Louise Ottilie Pfeiffer in Wodonga in 1877.
The parents of Johann, Henry and other children were Heinrich Christian Auhl and Sophia Dorothea Bitter whom I believe immigrated from Bremen in 1848 on the President Smidt and married in Klemzig Adelaide that year.
I have no genealogy information as yet on the Auhl and Bitter families prior to their arrival in Adelaide but I'll keep researching, I would expect the AUHL surname would have been AUL back in Germany.
I have put together a bunch of notes on what I have found out so far starting with Heinrich Auhl and Sophia Bitter and working down through the children but I have gaps which you might be able to help me with.

Mike,
Thanks very much for this information I'll follow up further through my local genealogical society which I'm a member of.

Kris,
Wow, you have done a lot of research and confirms my findings.
Heinrich and Sophia were married at Klemzig on 26th Sept 1848 and the marriage was registered ok.
Johann Otto AUHL was born at Klemzig on 6th Jan 1849 but no registration found. On his death registration in Geelong in 1907 it does have have F Hy Auhl & M Doris Bitter which confirms the genealogy.
It didn't take you long to find out that August Heinrich was registed as OUHL plus the two marriages it took me ages, well done. At one stage in 1897 August managed the Border Gate Hotel at Cockburn on the SA NSW border.
I'm fairly well absorbed with family tree stuff at the moment and I discover new things every day, this site has been a goldmine.
Thanks

Hi Gerry,
Out of interest I have a death certificate from 1887, issued in Silverton, regarding the death of my gt gt Aunt at Burta Station Sth Australia (near Cockburn) with August Auhl as a witness to the burial.
Cheers Richard
-
Hi Richard,
Thanks for the information about August Auhl he was my GG Fathers brother and the only Auhl sibling to stay in South Australia with the others plus parents moving overland to Wodonga/Albury around 1875. The parents had arrived in 1848.
I do know that August spent a number of years at Cockburn but it's now great to know he was there in 1887.
Does the Certificate state August's occupation and what was the date of the burial, I assume it was at Cockburn.
Once again thanks for taking the time to post the information.
Regards
Gerry

No problems Gerry,
Unfortunately it only lists his name as a witness to the burial with J S Armstrong ( I think it is James Sutherland Armstrong ) whom I think owned the station at the time. (the death was on 6th Feb of 1887) I note that August was once the licensee of the Barrier Hotel down the road. I can email you the certificate if you like. I cant see how I can do it here my email is (*).
Cheers, glad I could help
Richard

Thanks Richard,
I probably don't need the certificate thanks, the information is very help as I don't have a lot on August Auhl, I was aware that at one stage he was a publican at the Border Gate Hotel at Cockburn but I didn't know abut the Barrier Hotel, have you any more information on that?
August married twice and died at Cockburn in 1914. When his father was accidently killed in 1888 at Wodonga in Victoria his Probate documents in October 1888 have August residing at "Bertha Station" in NSW but now I know it was Burta Station.
Regards
Gerry

My appologies re the barrier hotel, it was the Border Gate.
It makes me wonder if she was buried on Burta station some distance south of cockburn or in the cockburn cemetery in town where it might have been possible for August Auhl to be witness given his hotel was down the road at the Border Gate.

Hi Gerry
My Name is Ross Wilson, Heinrich Christian Friedrich AUL is my second great Grandfather, his son Johann Otto AUHL my Great grand father his daughter Alme L Auhl my Grandmother and my father Rupert Ross Auhl my father. The story of the family is quite complicated Johann was born in Klemzig, South Australia and at some stage he and his wife Anna Juliane Pauline LANGE moved to
Bowna NSW which is not a long way from Albury. Alme was born in Bowna and her birth registered in Albury at some stage Alme met Alexander Wilson and consequently fell pregnant, the baby was born in Carlton, a suburb of Melbourne when the baby (my Father) was born Alme died and so Left him with his grandparents as at this time Alex had gone to ww1.
At this point I will stop and you can tell me if you want to hear the continuing saga.

Hi Ross,
Nice to hear from you and great to see that you are a descendant of Heinrich Aul/Auhl and Dorothea Bitter. Johann otto was the first born after their arrival in SA and my GGF, Henry Auhl was second born and while I should concentrate on Henry's branch I have extended a bit out to include his siblings' genealogy so I'm interested in and sort of early Auhl family history.
I have some information on the life in South Australia then at Wodionga so I might be able to fill some gaps if you like.
Please PM me your email address

I tried to send my email but roots stopped me. however I could try again but they said I haven't posted enough stuff on roots so until I do the will stop me sending my email address. however that situation can be reversed. if you would like to try.
I would be very interested to see to connections in the family as I was raised to believe that Alme died at a young age but could not prove it. My father was left on the door step of Alex's parents house in Oxford Street, North Geelong. They had a note which I don’t have and a birth extract naming mother only but I believe the note said that Alme had died in child birth and with a broken hart they were moving back to England, the left no address or any means of contact. Joseph and Alice(nee Pawson) Wilson took my father in and named him Gordon Brendon Wilson.
I am now 61 and have been trying have been trying to research Alme for a few years now but before that I had to be careful not to upset my mother. In my research I have found that Johann and Anna Auhl were buried in the east Geelong cemetery in an unmarked grave. Which I have visited and they are not far from some of my other relatives in the same cemetery.
My Father didn't find out about this until he was in his twentys and wanted to get married at that point he had to be change his name by de-pole and be adopted which would have thrown him a bit as he believed until then that he was a Wilson, Recently I got his birth certificate but it didn't throw much more light on the subject, no father and no parent for Alme. So my investigations ave been a bit difficult to verify but the more I searched the more I believed I was on the right track. So your note has been gold and I would like to see your family tree if you have one.
Regard
Ross

Though my post is not relevant to the topic I wondered whether you were familiar with the South Australian author Ian Auhl. He wrote a number of books about South Australian history, in particular the Burra district where I believe he lived for many years.

I connect to the Bitter/Auhl history through Emilie Sophie Lehmann who married Friedrich Hermann Christopher Bitter, greatnephew of Sophie Dorothea Bitter who married Heinrich Johann Christian Auhl
They arrived together in 1848 on the "President smidt"accompanied by her child Christoph Joachim Fritz Bitter, born 22/3/1846 Detershagen,Mecklenberg,Prussia.Does anyone know what happened to this child?thank you
-
Hi,
I have been researching the Auhl/Bitter family for a few years now I have not found a death or burial records for the child. The death Certificates for Sophia and Heinrich do not mention the child either.

Hi Gerry,
I'm a descendant of Christoff Auhl, Heinrich's brother. I'm currently electronically documenting all the family history we have.
After reading through this thread, I note the following from our records:
- August Heinrich Auhl died 16/10/1914, buried Cockburn.
- Johann Otto Auhl died 9/12/1907, buried Geelong.
- Ian Auhl described earlier in the thread is actually Ian Leslie Auhl (1914-1996), son of John/Albert Auhl and grandson of August Heinrich Auhl.
I have a nine page typed document by Ian Leslie Auhl describing the Heinrich Auhl descendants.
Let me know if you have any requests for more details.
Regards, Gary.
