Title: Family name of Edouin
Post by: ianwatedge on Tuesday 29 June 10 20:01 BST (UK)
Has any one come across the family name of Edouin. I am looking for a marriage of William "Willie" Edouin, born Brighton circa 1845, have found him, as a widower, and daughter Daisy on 1901 census. Have tried different spellings but to no avail.

Most unusual name and nothing on FreeBMD for the Edouin family.  There is however a William Edouin born circa 1860 on Genes Reunited.  Perhaps there is some connection?

Wikipedia and several other websites all have a lot on him including early photos and the following.
Edouin, [William Frederick] Willie [né Boyer] (1846–1908), comic actor

Edouin was born in Brighton under the name William Frederick Bryer, the youngest of five children of John Edwin Bryer, an English dance instructor, and his wife Sarah Elizabeth (née May).

In 1871, he joined Lydia Thompson's burlesque company, as its leading male comedian, and met his future wife, Alice Atherton (1854–99).  The couple had 2 daughters, Daisy & May,

So  perhaps you should be looking under a range of names like Boyer or Bryer for hiim.  His Brighton Birth cert is probably under Bryer in the March quarter of 1846 but his marriage could be under any of those names, probably in America where he spent much of his time.

Roy, thankyou for your input.
Since my enquiry(in the past hour) I have had a email from the person with Willie Edouin on her Genes Reunited Tree.
It seems as though Edouin was a stage name, his real name being William Frederick Bryer 1846-1908.
I am hoping that this lead will break down a 'brick wall' that I have had for a number of years. Bryer being my 3rd great grandmothers maiden name, I have had trouble in finding her family.

It is possible that as William's father was John EDWIN Bryer, William may have opted for a variation of his father's middle name to perform under.

Sibling probability (Brighton birth certs and their GRO references)
Births Dec 1840   Bryer    John William        Brighton    7   226
Births Jun 1842   Bryer    Eliza Sarah         Brighton    7   2_5
Births Mar 1844  BRYER    Rose                 Brighton    7   360
Births Mar 1846  BRYER    William Frederick    Brighton    7   302

The IGI shows Eliza had a middle name Sarah and was baptised at St Nicolas Brighton on 24 July 1842.  That baptism also reveals that her mother was called Sarah Elizabeth but her maiden name would not appear to have been May as Wikipidia suggests.
There is a marriage of John Edwin Bryer in Brighton to Sarah Elizabeth LIND, (St Nicholas Brighton 16 May 1832)
This was followed by the birth of an Edwin Charles Bryer in 1833 when the family were living in Northall Cottages. Brighton. At that stage John was not listed as a performer, his occupation was an Ivory turner.

Many thanks Roy G & Omega 1,
I have now started to compile the tree for the Bryers, John Edwin Bryer born 1810, Cranborne, Dorset, married Sarah E Lind (nee May), widow of William Lind.
John turns out to be my 3rd gr grandmother, Hannah Maria Bryer, born Broadwater, c1812, brother.
Have found the five children of John & Sarah, William Frederick Bryer (Edouin) being the youngest. Have read up about him on Wikipedia.

There did not seem to be any half siblings under the Lind surname amongst the Brighton baptisms between 1829-1832, but I did find the local Linds included a master Mariner.  So it might be worth investigating whether Sarah's first marriage was so short because her first husband was lost at sea?

Also the birth years of the first Bryer children (Charles Edwin 1833, John William 1840 & Eliza 1842) suggest the family were resident in Brighton at the time of the 1841 census, so you should be able to find them on it.

Just realised that we have been in touch before because I relate (albeit very loosely and through marriage) to your Bryer tree.
Hannah Bryer, (1812) the sister of your John, married Thomas Grinyer.  Their son Thomas born Brighton 1834, married Emma Clifton (b 1829 Brighton) and Emma was the sister of my Great x 3 grandfather William Clifton (b Brighton 1827)

Alice Atherton (born Alice Hogan) is the sister of a direct relative, Lavinia Mackay.

Not  to hijack but.. Edouin and Lavinia moved to England where Lavinia's son John Mackay attended a school named Ramsgate (have picture and cursive schoolwork for young John).  What is Ramsgate?

There are many theatre review articles by searching LOC newspaper site (edouin and alice Atherton)

Alice was buried in NYC (moved cemeteries)

My Mum and step dads surname is Edouin, my step dads mother changed her name to Edouin by deed pole but we think his grandmother may of been related to Willie Edouin they were in Brighton and London
