Hello Christopher - many thanks for your posting. I had visited the romchat page a few weeks ago, but I didn't appreciate the breadth of its contents - especially those of the Griffiths Valuation. There are lots of leads there that I'll be following.

Hi Hermit (from Hermitage roots?) My grandmother on my dads side was Frances (Fanny) Jones. I first visited her in Johnstown, Dunany at the age of six and went annually until I was sixteen, after which she passed away at the age of 86. My father was Stephen Sibthorpe Jones, he passed away seven years ago in England, aged 90. I have clear memories of the (ruins) of the Hermitage and Susan and Anne Jones's homes. I spent many a time at Jones Quay which was deserted by then but my dad said was very busy historically. I also remember Dunany House and going to have tea with Admiral England. I have visited the tomb of Sibthorpe Jones in Dunany. My brother has been tracing the family tree. We knew quite a lot by grandma.I beleive our Coat of Alms was granted in the 1500s by King Richard (not sure which one). Michael Jones was senior in Cromwells army (sadly) and died I beleive in suspicious circumstances (poisoned?). My grandmother lived at the Hermitage as a girl but was disowned when she eloped with a catholic fisherman, Peter Caffrey. She had a long and happy life, bearin 12 children, my dad being one of the eldest. hope this helps, lovely to have contact. My name is Bernie (Bernadette) and I now live in Kerikeri, New Zealand. I have a copy of an old photo of the Hermitage. My dad told me several Jones went to America, is your name Edward? :)

Hello Bernie: how wonderful to hear from you !! The Edward Jones you mention is either Edward Henry Jones (1858 – 1934), my maternal grandfather, or else his father, also Edward Jones (1821 – 1922). I have a large collection of Jones descendants, in the British Isles and the USA - and even a “lost” branch in Australia. Later today I’ll be sending you a PM that can serve as a “starter kit”, and we can take it from there. There are lots of old photos, as well as many current ones – and many questions that are yet to be answered. There are also several other people researching this Jones line - including other descendants of Fanny Jones Caffrey.
Again, thanks for your posting, and thanks to RootsChat.com! There’s lots to follow – Hermit

Hello bluemac - thanks for your post. My earlier reply to user bernie jones mentions my maternal grandfather Edward Jones, whose father (also named Edward Jones) had a coal-importing business at the Jones Quay. He married Maria Mulroy - their marriage is mentioned in a plaque that's mounted in the baptistry at St. Colmcille's church in Togher. Edward and Maria had a number of children, whose descendants' family names are among those cited in the bernie jones reply.
Please let me know what your areas of interest are, and I'll post a reply with further details.

I am looking for any old images of the boats, the quay images of the area etc, I am also developing a product and want to use some dunany heritage in images and icons, as i think the area could have the relevant history... do you know if the boats brought in any alcohol etc.. for shipping on.
also any old remedies, or folk law type stories could be interesting.
-
I'm not aware, from the family oral history, of any imports other than coal - but in looking through some old correspondence I came across an article in the Journal of the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society by Michael Coyle, entitled "Sailing Vessels of Annagassan and Dunany in the County Louth", Volume XIX, number 4 (1980), page 264. I believe that the Louth County Library in Dundalk has this journal. My great grandfather's several ships are among those mentioned.

Hi Bernie, I am Thomas Caffrey's grandaughter, Carla. I think we may have met when I was younger.Thomas was one of many ! Was Stephen your father? I too would love to learn more about the Caffrey family.
-
Hello Carla – welcome to Rootschat. I do have some information about the Jones/Caffrey connection, which starts with the Richard Jones who built “The Hermitage” at the Jones Quay. He married Mary Anne Sibthorpe. Their third son was John Foster Jones, who married H. E. Hopkins; their son Richard married Margaret Henry, and their children were John S., William, Robert, Fanny (sometimes spelled Fannie), Alice, and Florence. (By the way, Fanny is a given name – not a nickname for Frances). Fanny married Peter Caffrey, and their son Stephen M. (presumably the one you mention) married Nora Kilgallon.
Information on the living generations that follow Stephen and Nora cannot be displayed on a RootsChat posting, but I’ll send you a Personal Message with contact information on several Caffreys who know more than I do.

Hi Hermit - I'm descended from the same dunany jones - through edward, married to maria mulroy - my great grandfather would have been thomas, who married Kate Hughes. Hallo!
-
Hallo indeed, JonesBackThen - how nice to hear from you. My maternal grandfather, Edward H. Jones, was a brother of the Thomas who marred Kate Hughes. I'll be glad to bring you up to date on the parts of the family tree that I'm familiar with, but I believe that it would be easier to do so by a Personal Message, which I'll send later today.

I think I have the family tree that you put together - am one of Mary nee Jones' daughters. I have to have 3 posts before I can pm, so this is number 2!

Here's my third post and hopefully I can message you then. Isn't the internet just amazing?

Hello all, may I join in? I am Mike, youngest son of Mary Rose Jones (born Jan 8th 1920) daughter of Charles Jones of Annagassan. My great grandfather was Frank Jones from Dunany. As I write, I am visiting Annagassan, where I have numerous cousins, many of whom have fragments of the family history. I have many snippets from my mum, who remembers as a child visiting "Aunt Susan" at Dunany Quay, told me stories of a great uncle - Edward, who emigrated to Buffalo NY. Mum worked as a young girlAs things stand, my mum, who had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Jones family history is currently 93 years old and gravely ill in a nursing home in Castlebellingham, so unfortunately not in a position to contribute - though I'm sure she would appreciate a prayer or two over the next few days if you are so inclined. Her youngest brother Frank, lives in Annagassan, and still farms some of the family land at Dunany. I have had access to some family research carried out by a Sr. Sheila Flood - who unfortunately passed on a few years ago. my mum was in contact with her as was mums eldest brother Eddie, unfortunately he also died about 4 years ago.
I'm sure you'll appreciate the circumstances here, the situation with mum is fairly inevitable and with it will pass a great deal of knowledge of the family history, however, as I write, it is good to establish contact with another couple of sources to fill in the gaps of my patchy knowledge. whilst I have some family documentation, it's not with me - I've travelled light on a trip not intended as a holiday, will be happy to share it on my return to my home in England. I do however have access to Frank - will see him for the usual cup of tea in the morning, before going to see mum - he will be thrilled to hear that some lost family connection may be established and we should be able to supply at least some of the more recent bits of the puzzle, should you be interested.
Mum's wish is that she rest in the cemetary in Dunany with her dad and younger sister Annie, (Eddie, Susie, Celia, Charles, Monica and Theresa are buried in Kilsaran, William (Bill) in Gateshead, England) so should you find yourselves visiting on any future research trips, spend a moment with them - it's a very peaceful and beautiful spot. Would be great to hear from any of you, best regards, Mike Hanley (mjg_hanley@yahoo.co.uk)

Hello Mike - how wonderful to hear from you - even though it's at a sad time. Your mother will certainly be in our prayers this weekend. And as to the Jones genealogy - there's lots to tell, though you probably are already aware of it. I'll start that later today , but in the meantime do please give our best to Frank. When we visited Ireland in 2007 we were fortunate to meet Frank on our first day, and he was the most gracious and knowledgeable person we could have hoped for. I'm especially interested in your mother's recollections, as well as the work done by Sister Sheila. Best regards = Hermit

Frank spent the whole afternoon driving us around Annagassan, we saw the school they all went to, he took us to the stephens grave, he also took us to Blackrock where they all went dancing together, no transport they all went on their bikes. Frank Jones is the most amazing person I have ever met.
Loved it I can't wait to go back.

I think Bernie Jones is my cousin. My mother was Francis Caffrey, granny Fanny Caffrey who lived in Dunany. I too have a copy of the family tree your father worked on and made such interesting reading. We visited the Jones monument in St.Patricks Cathedral in Dublin a few years ago

Carla, I met you when you were a child. your grandfather Tommy was my uncle - did he play the accordion or that may have been Uncle Stephen who researched the family tree.

Hi Beccami,
This is Bill Rae in the U.S., aka "Hermit." I've attached a outline descendant report for Peter Caffrey showing 3 Stephen Caffrey's. I hope this is helpful. I can also put you in touch with other Caffrey's in the U.S. and Ireland.
I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Bill
Thank you so much for getting back to me and for the wonderful attachment. I am Rebecca Frances Miller daughter of deceased Marian Caffrey and my brother is Stephen Sibthorpe Miller so the family names of both sides have been given to us both. I would love to contact other family members.
What relation to me are you?
This is very exciting. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer so was trying to establish whether it is genetic as I have a daughter of my own who is 9. I have discovered that Nora my grandmother died aged 50 in 1965 of breast cancer so I will be eligible to have the genetic test.
Not the best circumstances to be looking at my family tree but it has become quite important to me now I have started looking.
Thank you again for your time.

Hi,
Tracking my ancestors back, I have a William Henry Jones, born on 14th December 1798, in or near the town of Castle Bellingham in Dunany, Louth. At 18 he enlisted in the 48th Foot, The Northamptonshire regiment, in 1816 in Naas. William served in Australia and India, before finally settling in Wellington NZ, as barrack sergeant in his later years. I have his family tracked to the present but would like to know more about his father, also named William Henry Jones (a name that has currently been carried on for four generations in NZ). There's some suggestion he may also have been a retired soldier from the Northhamptonshire regiment who were 'recuperating' in Nass after a mauling they received in the American War of Independence. But seeing the posts from Dunany Jones, he may also have been a local. Any information would be appreciated.
Ps, he is also an ancestor of one of the very first All Blacks :D
Thanks
Brian
