How can I access electoral rolls from 1920 until 1990?
I am trying to trace my grandfather.
I know where he was in 1911 (census) and I know he lived at 1041, 10th Street, Trafford Park, Manchester in the 1960's. I don't know what happened to him before and after that and I thought the electoral rolls would help me. He also remarried after my grandmother died (1941) but I don't know when he married. He was with his new lady in the 1950's, if not before.
Thanks.

Hi,
first of all you can only search any electoral roll as far as i know about by street name and not surname.
If you give details of his name and his first wife, maybe we might be able to trace his movements a little for you?
It may also be worth you contacting or even visiting Trafford Local Studies Centre
They hold Electoral roll listings / Directories and photographs of the area.

If you could find the marriage cert. for his remarriage, it should give you an address.
Are you aware that no electoral rolls were compiled during WW2?
1939 was done and then the next one was 1945/46.[not sure about that!]
I'm sure someone will know exactly. ::)

This is as much as I know.
He was born Thomas Henry Jackson in 1900.. 27th March in Toxteth Park (BMD, 1901 census & 1911 census) although he lied about his age in 1916 when he joined the army. His date of birth from then on varies from 1896 to 1900 depending on who he was trying to convince! Even BMD death regs (dies 1973) is wrong with 1896. I suspect he may well have forgotten his real age.
His mother was Martha Alice Potter and his father John William Jackson.
He married Mary Florence Wainwright in 1921, in Manchester. How he got from Liverpool (1911 census) to Manchester (1916 Army Service Records) I have no idea. In the 1920's he was living at 2 Bennett's Buildings, King Street, Stretford.
Any use?
Cheers.

Do you know the name of his second wife? That would help!

I am trying to do two things.
1. Find what happened to my grandfather. His name was Thomas Henry Jackson, b. 1898, Sale, Cheshire.
In 1965 he was living at 1041 Tenth Street, Trafford Park, Manchester. That was the last time I saw him and I know that most of the Trafford Park village was demolished.
2. After my grandmother died in 1941 (approx) he remarried. He married a lady we all called Lilly. I have a feeling she was originally from Ireland.
I cannot find a marriage for them anywhere so I was hoping an electoral roll may give me the answer to her real name and if they were actually married or not.
Any thoughts, please?

Main Library or perhaps Archives Centre will have the old Electoral Rolls - not indexed by name tho :(

Aah! Yes! The first Thomas Jackson was incorrect. The second one, Sale, Cheshire is the main man.
The threads were merged which caused confusion. I should have said that the first one was a false trail.

You think the moderator who merged them would have read them first befor merging them and that way there would be not confusion?
As they are two totally differant people ( Who would be a mod ::) )

Yes they are two completely different people but even I didn't know it at first... both had wives M.A. Jackson and even one of the brothers had the same name!
I was researching one of the brothers... the real brother ( because the house address was correct) and I discovered he had been killed in WW1. When his mum signed for his things she signed herself Mary Ann and this confused me because the Toxteth guy was married to Martha Alice. When I investigated further that was when I found I had got the wrong g.grandfather. The guy from Sale is 100% though and I have managed to confirm this.
I am sorry for any confusion.

Hi
Perhaps it was my fault for putting a link on it ::)
But having said that both posts were asking for an electoral roll look up at the same address in the same period for a Thomas (Henry) Jackson.

Thankyou for trying to help, Rosie. These things happen.
In the meantime... where were the people from Trafford Park rehoused when it was demolished?
