Title: Miller, Crawford & Chippewa Co., WI
Post by: imasue on Saturday 28 August 10 01:25 BST (UK)
I'm new to this, I have a brick wall with John Miller and his wife Mary.  John was born in PA, his wife Mary was born in KY. They had Elizabeth Virginia Miller born 14 Nov 1832 in Crawford Co., Michigan Territory (later became WI); Scott Miller born @1833, he probably had another name like Winfield but we just don't know. Next cam Newton Miller born @1836; Edward Alexander Miller about @1838, he was married 2 or 3 times, his last wife was Caroline  ???. Emeline Rebecca Miller born 1841, she was married 3 times, 1st. Marcum, 2nd Gibbs and last Whiting. George Washington born @1844; and last Christopher Columbus Miller born 17 Feb 1848, all born around Prairie du Chein, Crawford Co. WI

John's parents came from Germany to PA but that's the only information we have, he might have been called Johann or something like that.

Thanks,

Thanks so much for your input, we have the information on E. Alexander, Emeline Rebecca, Elizabeth Virginia, Christopher Columbus and George Washington, so far no luck on Newton and Scott.  Fairly sure they both had first names and that Newton and Scott were the middle names but can't find anything on them.  Really appreciate your help. Sue

Hello Sue,

Ok. You should have been more specific in your original post with all the information you had and what exactly was required.  It was'nt obvious that you already had that info.

Have you looked at the possibility that Newton and Scott were young men by 1860, could they have been casulties of the Civil War  ???

Regards
Sandra

:'( Sorry, I'm really new at this, I know that C. Columbus was in the Civil war, he lost an arm, but  really haven't looked for the other's as I have middle names probably but not full names.  C. Columbus married Zelpha McCann, her brothers were the ones who had the Eagle "old Abe" and it went through the Civil War with them.  Sue

Hi Sue,

Enjoyed reading about "Old Abe" - Just a few snippets you may or maynot have already. You have probably seen this entry or been in touch with the McCann Family - Re Zelphia McCann wife of Columbus.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/09mw/

and the McCann website

http://users.ap.net/~chenae/mccann.html

and a couple of archive entries from way back - also named Sue, perhaps that could be you. (if it is - you seem to have hit a proverbial brick wall since 2002 and could do with a break-through)

OBITUARY - ZELPHIA [MC CANN] MILLER - Mrs Columbus Miller

Had Been Ill for Over a Year. On Tuesday, April 20th, at one o'clock p.m., Mrs. Zelphia Miller, passed away at her home in this city. Mrs. Miller has been confined to her bed most of the time for the past thirteen months, and at times during her long illness she showed signs of improvement, but in all cases they were temporary.

The deceased was born at Eagle Point in Chippewa county, Wisconsin, on October 19th, 1857, and she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McCann, hardy pioneers of the then wild district of upper Wisconsin. She married Columbus Miller, a veteran of the Civil War, and he survives her, as do also their four children, namely; Walter and Clarence E. Miller and Mrs. Mary Leifeste, of this city, and Mrs. F. E. Springer, of Seattle, Washington. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Reney, of Itasca, Wis., and Mrs. George Lord of Gainsford, Alberta, Canada, two brothers who reside in Wisconsin, and also by thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The Miller family came up here from Chippewa Falls in the early "homestead" days and they setttled on a claim about ten miles north of the village of Iron River. For 30 years or more, the family has resided in town. Mrs. Miller has long been a member of the Congregational Church and has taken an active interest in the Ladies Aid and Missionary Society. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Samaritan and Beaver orders.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o;clock from the Congregational Church, and the interment will be at the City Cemtery. The brief home services will take place at 1L30.

In the death of Mrs. Miller, the community loses a generous, neighborly woman, who was ever kind to those particularly who were in distress.

The Iron River Pioneer Thursday, April 22 1925

:)Yes, that was me, I keep coming back every once in awhile to try to see if anyone has any more information on the Miller family.  For a family that was suppose to have been in the area for as long as they were, very little information is available.  My line is Elizabeth Virginia Miller born @1832 in or near Prairie du Chine, she married Jonathan Shotwell Hazen in 1846 so was not in the 1850 census with the rest of the family.

I took a quick look at the book but couldn't find any Millers that looked familiar.

Thanks again.  Now that I've found this Chat group again, I'll try with some of my other hard to find lines. ;D
