Post by: Kayto11 on Friday 03 September 10 22:53 BST (UK)
I am seeking information about St. Bernard's Industrial School for Girls, Fethard, Dundrum, Co. Tipperary. My granmother was orphaned and sent here in the 30's/40's. Does anyone know any websites or information about this place ?

St Bernadettes was run by the Presentation Order of Nuns and I think there is still a convent there today. So you could try writing for information.

Hi,
It is now actually Dundrum House Hotel, comprised of the old buildings plus some new extensions. There is a very popular golf course attached to it, and it offers very good 3 star accommodation.
Google 'Dundrum house hotel and country club' for images and all information.

Some of the children from there went to local primary school, Knockavilla in the 1970's when the convent closed the remaining children went to Presentation Thurles, which is still there today.

Hi Globet,
I'm very interested in this Industrial School in Dundrum as some of my relations were also put in there due to family circumstances.  Do you have any more info on school?  or who to contact to find out any info there may be in registers etc?  Life must have been very difficult and lonely for the children.
Thanks  :)

Hi SRBA,
I'm not sure where you would get records, but you could try The Presentation Convent in Thurles Co Tipperary, that's where the children went when Dundrum closed, I presume records would also have gone there, as i said i think that was late 1970's, I know some of the children went to local school with us but that was just day school, they returned to Dundrum every evening.

Hi Globet,
Would it be rude to ask, what years you remember the Dundrum children attending your school?
My cousins were at Industrial school in 1940s, as far as I can judge (much too early for yourself to remember, no doubt) but it would be interesting to find out if the kids went to the national school back in my cousins' time or if it was only in more recent years.
Thanks for rapid reply  :)

Hi SRBA,
I attended the school from 1972-1980 and from what i remember the children were there up to about 1976/77ish. I don't know what year the children started to attend the local because they had their own school in the convent and when that closed they attended local school as day pupils, I know there is a local book "Education in Knockavilla" that might have the info in it. I'm sure i have a copy in the house I will look for it & let you know any info that  is relevent.

I'm really not sure but it could be worth talking to someone at the Presentation Convent in Thurles. Co.Tipperary. I went to see some of the nuns about 20 years ago. There was also a priest, who was the chaplain at the convent in the early 70s, Father Seamus Rochford ,his sister lived in Thurles. I did my Leaving cert in Thurles and left in 1973. They must have records somewhere, in Thurles or Cashel.

Hi everyone, I am trying to find out some information about my mother Mary Kelly, born in 1931 and was possible brought up in the orphanage in Dundrum. I know she was confirmed in Knockavilla in May 1946, sponsored by Mrs J Gleeson. Sadly my mother died in 1968 when I was only 8 yrs old and we have only just found some certificates following my father's recent death. Any possible leads will be gratefully received.

Welcome to RootsChat Bazza,
Unfortunately most of the people on this thread don't appear to have logged on here for quite some time.

You say Mary might have been in Dundrum, does that mean you are sure she was in care but are not sure where?
This link explains who holds care records
http://www.historyireland.com/volume-22/sources-children-institutional-care-ireland-1840s-1990s/
There is a phone number at the bottom of the link for AIRR, they should be able to tell you who to contact.
You can read about the AIRR project here
http://www.eneclann.ie/archives-records-management/case-studies/dept-health-children/

Do you have your parents marriage cert, it should have Mary's father's name, if she was in care due to the death of both parents their death Certs should be here https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
Or was she in care because her mother was unmarried in that case was she adopted?

Hi, Thanks for your quick response. There is no father listed on my mother's birth certificate. But on her marriage certificate a John Kelly is listed as her father. We think a father was listed to save embarrassment as no one knows about a John Kelly. As I might of mentioned, my mother died in 1968 when I was 8 and my father remarried 3 yrs later. Family legend is that Mum grew up in an orphanage and Dundrum was suggested earlier today as she was confirmed in Knockavilla in 1946. It was only after my father's recent death that certain documents & certificates came to light. She was baptised in Thurles within 2 weeks of her birth in May 1931. We have no record of what happened to her mother, also Mary Kelly. I will certainly continue with the line of enquiry you have suggested, many, many thanks.

Hi

My mother went to at Bernards Industrial school in the 60's she actually passed away recently, I believe she never recovered from her time there... awful to think what she must have gone through. Anyway if anyone can help me with info about what it was like at the school.. perhaps you knew her "Alice Maher".. also I am interested in obtaining records
