Title: Looking For Policemen ????
Post by: Cougar on Wednesday 06 April 05 11:32 BST (UK)
I have come across this site which appears to be a guide to Police Archives listed by county.
They have a disclaimer saying that it is NOT complete etc. but it may bring you some
joy.

http://www.open.ac.uk/Arts/history/policing/police-archives-guide/index.html

I have found that when you want Police Records, the easiest way is to contact the
local Police headquarters and ask for their archive section - this usually produces
satisfactory results (which is basically what this site is).

Once I found my great grandfather in the police records I was also able to order, from the same site, two newspaper articles relating to his retirement and his obituary...marvellous! Thankyou again. I hope other people have as much success with it as I did.

Hi
If your father was in the Police Force in c1950 (and he is since deceased, I assume) you should be able to get some information from the Police archives section - I would think that perhaps each county holds their own archives, if not, might be in central London.
Hope this helps.

Hi Cougar.Thankyou for the reply. My Dad is thankfully still fit and well at 80 years of age...and I was hoping to come across a list of policemen including himself and friends that he served with...to jog his memory a bit.It would be nice if he could make contact with someone from the past.

If you contact the Police Association - assume they have one over in England - they should be able to assist.

:'(  Awww, I'm all upset now.

My gt-gt-grandfather (Joseph W Mills) was a policeman from 1842 to 1859, one of the originals, would've worn the top-hatted uniform, worked in V division (Fulham) and later as a Sergeant in T division. He resigned in June 1859.

I can't find any mention of him in the listings.   :'(

Still, I shouldn't really be surprised I s'pose, because I can't find out where he was buried either! He died in Nov 1864, but I can't find him in any burial records anywhere ... ancestors can be so inconsiderate!

There is also a list of off duty members killed by enemy action during World War II.  http://www.met.police.uk/history

Another Police site that is well worth a visit is:

http://www.historybytheyard.co.uk/index.htm

It has lists of the Police intake from the very beginning, Sept 1829 through to Feb 1830

I found my gg grandfather there - First intake Day 1  ;D

It appears that the majority of the original Policemen were dismissed for being drunk on Duty  ;D

I think my guy was one of the first few to ever receive a pension from the Police Force.

Now I have his warrant number - I don't know where to get any further info. I guess it's the Nat Archives and hope they don't charge a fortune  ::)

Anyone know any other sites for Police Info?

Happy Hunting
Di

PS - Wildgoose - I checked for your George Nicholl and he wasn't on the list. He must have joined after Feb 1830.

Hi Lady Di
Don't know what happens in England, but here in Australia the Police Headquarters seem to have their own archives and it is amazing how much can be found from them.
Here in Adelaide, it is run by volunteers, so 'catching up with them' is the hardest part.
It may be worth your while to try the main police station in the area (where he was) and find out what they did with their old records..............if they don't have something similar, they should be able to put you in the right direction, but from memory, there is an English Police site.
Hope this helps

Hiya Cougar,

Long time, no speak!

Thanks for the Police Info. I think I will need to follow up with the Nat Archives as my guy joined 29 Sept 1829 and was a "Peeler" up until he was pensioned off in the 1850's.

I will keep looking though  ;D

Thanks
Di

PS - How was the holiday and did you find David S. ??

Holiday great thanks - and NO David Stanley to be found.
Gather you haven't fallen over him either???
Think I have exhausted Coventry, very helpful people, but no joy -  and I can only assume (shocking word) that he may not have been baptised there or registered there for that matter.

I have an Alfred Tanner listed as a Police Constable on the 1861 census living, with his family, at 27 Barclay Street, London.
There are Police constable's living either side of them too, i wonder if these houses were owned by the Police force and let to staff?
Anyway i've looked through most of the resources listed and haven't found any records of Alfred, its becoming quite frustrating.

Records of most police forces will be held in their local area, but The National Archives hold some records for the Metropolitan Police. the Royal Irish Constabulary, and for Transport Police. There are Research Guides for all three

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=104 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=104)

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=244 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=244)

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=336 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=336)

Some of the names of Metropolitan Police pensioners are searchable in the online Catalogue, and the actual records of a very few (years 1892-93 in MEPO 21/22) are in DocumentsOnline, also searchable by name.

Some of the Registers of Leavers from 1889 are also in DocumentsOnline, but they aren't searchable by name, and are a bit of a swine to use, so you might want to pretend they're not there!

The only other police records I have any experience of are those of the Glasgow Police (older than the Met) at the Mitchell Library, which are indexed by name. That's how I found that my great-great-grandmother's brother-in-law was dismissed from the force for drunkenness.

I went to the National Archives at Kew looking for details about a Met Police Inspector relation of mine in the mid 1800's - I found all his promotion records and pension details, if you have the opportunity it is very rewarding reading the Police orders.

I couldn't link up with the www.lightage.demon.co.uk./POLNOTES.htm site as noted in one of these posts.  I'm not sure if this site is still available, but found this site which includes Police, Railway, Mining Reports, etc. which might be very helpful for research.  It gives the index of the surnames which helps in finding people.

The web site www.lightage.demon.co.uk etc doesn't appear to be working as has been said before but the following has the first police recruits from Sept 1829 - Feb 1830 listed.

The Warrant numbers are from 1 - 3247

http://www.historybytheyard.co.uk/wt_nos_2750-3247.htm
(this should be the last page - Nos 2750-3247)
On the bottom of the page are selections for earlier numbers.

If all else fails Google the following
"List of Recruits 1829-30" and select the second cached option (there should only be two - well, there was when I just did it  ::))

Good luck

Di
(PS - If anyone needs a lookup - just ask, as I may be able to help with the early years)

As this thread is getting a little old, a few of the early links don't work any more. I am having real trouble finding out how to obtain police records.

From what i can make out from the above my best bet is to actually go to National Archives - Kew to get any info. I have tried searching: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=104
But to me the website doesn't make any sense.

On the 1861 Census my GrGrGr Granddad (Joshua Luetchford, Born: 1821, Living: Elder Road, Norwood) occupation is listed as Police Constable. I would love to find out more. Anyone off any advice? Is it worth me posting a "Lookup request"

Sorry for my ignorance, a bit of a newbie on this FamilyTree business!  :-\

Cheers

There was an article, by Karen Foy and Simon Fowler, about the history of Police in the November edition of Ancestors magazine. They mentioned that Police records are usually held by the constabulary in question or by local record offices. In some cases records were destroyed ... either during the war or when amalgamation or reorganisation took place. The NA can tell you if there are records and where they have been deposited. Unfortunately the recording of information by the police was not standardised so some records are better than others.

At the moment I am working on transcripts for the Metropolitan Police's Registers Of Leavers, in view of making them available to all on the National Archives' <a href="http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/">YourArchives</a> website. I have one question in relation to an aspect of my transcriptions. Would you expect to find officers who cancelled their leaving in the list?

I have a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34769344@N05/3236788816/in/set-72157613081627727/">photo</a> to demonstrate - it's the right-hand-side. At the moment I have not transcribed them, as they didn't technically leave the force - and as such I didn't think that they would be helpful to people. But I thought I would ask if people would think the information both helpful and important.

Post by: Cougar on Wednesday 01 April 09 00:31 BST (UK)
Hi and welcome
From my point of view, all information in the Registers should be transcribed - although 'technically' they didn't leave, it could still help someone, just by finding their name - all little details help.
Cheers, Cougar

As I thought Cougar. Thanks for the feedback. It hopefully won't take too long to add those few that rejoined to the list. I can then start checking and when that's done, upload what I have done.

Hopefully this will prove a useful resource for those looking for ancestors in the Metropolitan Police Force.

Congrats on doing this and for sharing - don't forget to put the site on rootschat, perhaps under a separate heading 'Police Leaving Registers' and the area or similar then leave the link with a short description of what the registers are about, the years covered etc,  so that it is easy for people to find.
Good hunting,
