Does anyone know the name of the home for unmarried mothers that used to be in Park Road, North Bedford?
Also would there be any records?

I've found a similar query posted to another website, asking about the Bedford Home for Girls (1930s) 1 Hill Rise, Park Road North, Bedford. It was run by St Albans Diocesan Council for Social Responsibility.

At least it will help me to go in the right direction. All I had on a birth certificate was Park Road, Bedford.

The 1936 Kelly's directory has at 17 Park Road North - Hyde, Percy James, Bedford & County Girls' Home (Miss E E Munford, lady supt)
It is there in the 1940 edition at the same address with Percy James Hyde junior
In 1948-50 edition it is not specifically listed at that address, only Percy Jas Hyde; & next to this address is Hill Rise

I could not find anything in their online catalogue.

Not as yet. According to the site I looked at that Dazy gave me, the records are in the Hertfordshire library, so I am going to go there first to see what they have.

Hi I have been trying to find out more information relating to my mother who was born at the home in Park Road North, Bedford in October 1932. I have made enquiries with Bedford archives and they have directed me to St. Albans Diocese. Apparently there are records to indicate that my mother was baptised at St. Martins Church on 11th November 1932 and also vaccination papers dated 1st February 1933. All of this information was given to me by Bedford archives by email and I paid online so it was all very painless. Problem is I still have no idea what happened to my mother after she had been vaccinated. I am waiting to find out from st. Albans Diocese if they can help me find out if my mother was officially fostered and if so who with. If anyone else has any information relating to what happened to babies and their mothers during this very traumatic time I'd be very grateful.

I have just come across this as I have been searching for my brother who was born in that home in 1966.
The address I have was Hill rise and the records were apparently sent to herts council. Unfortunately it seems that a lot of records never made it and have been lost forever. It has been suggested to me that some records have been destroyed by doo-gooders to protect the adoptees.
I have also contacted all the agencies that were around in that area or at least those offices in which records have been transferred.
I have come across a brick wall but will contact them again this week to see if they have managed to find anything.

So sorry I have not been in contact but have treatment for cancer. I am just recovering. Needless to say I havent been able to look into this any further but I will be in the near future hopefully. If I find anything I will let everyone know.

Beds Archives newsletter #93 Autumn 2012 has an article about the Bedfordshire Training Home for Girls 1879 - 1930 in Park Road North, Bedford. The Home closed in 1930 and the building was transferred to the St Albans Diocese for use as a Mother & Baby Home. My grandmother who is sadly not here anymore gave birth to a little girl who was then adopted after 6 weeks.
I have no date of birth or name.
Is it possible to trace someone with such little knowledge?

I know this was some time ago but we have a case here in Bedfordshire that has been widely advertised on social media and the local paper; of a lady trying to find her daughter Adelaine Shelly Peters who was born in Bedford Hospital on the 3rd September 1964. The State run unmarried mother's home that she says she was in was in Hurst Grove, Bedford. I traced back as far as 1947 when the Superintendent was a Miss Mumford and the address was given as 17 Park Road North (1 Hill Rise). In the 1963 Kelly's the address is listed under the name of Percy James Hyde, who I think was mentioned in earlier posts.
I am anxious to find out as much as possible about the home as the local radio station are hoping to run a short piece on their morning program this Monday. So very short notice and I was only contacted yesterday.

i was born in 1948 adopted at 10 days ..told i was born in unmarried mothers home ...but seem to remember being told it wad Shakespeare Rd...??? Was there something like this in Shakespeare Rd ?
