A recent search for an 1872 birth in Victoria revealed a birthplace of "Woor". Can anyone tell me what this is short for? Parents marriage was 1872 in Geelong and all subsequent births in Beechworth 1874-1887.

Hi
Possibly WOORI YALLOCK which is about 75 kilometers east of Melbourne.

In case you need to find other places
as per the Victoria Resources Board
Place names in Victoria abreviations

Another place to consider is Wooragee, which is north east of Beechworth.

I live in Beechworth. Wooragee is 10kms down the road on the way to Wodonga.
If you need any help in Beechworth let me know ;) There are still many descendants of the pioneering families living here.

Hi Alison, any chance you still live in Beechworth? It has been a while since this post I realise!
-
Yes I do ;)

Great! Do you know if there are any Thornhill's still around? I am looking for descendents of William Henry Thornhill and Matilda Walker Thornhill, arrived sometime between 1856 and 1858...more details can be found here.

Please don't put yourself out for information though, just what you might recall from previous research/experience!

I have just read through the other post.
I don't know of any Thornhills in Beechworth but there are still JENSENs here.
-
Thanks, that's what I thought. Appreciate your confirmation. ;D
-
No worries if you want any photos of graves, buildings etc let me know :D

Good morning,
There could still be Thornhill descendants there. Girls will have married and have a name change. Just takes a little more time to find them.

Yes there are still Jensens here- on the other thread it mentioned a daughter marrying a Jensen. ;)
-
Yes, it's proved tricky finding who the girls married, apart from Ann marrying a Jensen there is no info I could find on bdm Victoria or New South Wales.
I will consider hunting down a copy of a historical book about Beechworth when I'm in Melbourne next week; time and previous commitments makes it impossible to visit Beechworth, as pretty as it looks!

I have a fair Library of books on Beechworth. Which one were you after ? I can look it up for you ;)
