Title: COPELAND Portobello
Post by: hineahua on Saturday 23 October 10 22:15 BST (UK)
Hi to Everyone
I am researching my Mother's side of the family.
John & Annie Copeland lived in Portobello, John was a Baker and
Confectioner and had a shop in 254 High Street. John died in 1913 and his son John took over the business, he died 1956.
His sister Annie Stewart and her husband John then had the shop. After her husband died Annie took over the shop until she died 1981. I am looking for any connections to the family or anyone that can give me some information about the family.
Thank you
Regards
Hineahua (New Zealand)

Hi,
Try around Aberdeen, Rayne, Turriff, or Tough.  My Family is connected to the Hall family. One of the girls married Moses Copland as it was spelt SP.
If you get stuck you could try Alford Family History Society. There should be a link to this, if you find the links at the beginning of Aberdeen.
In your family, just to make sure, You have an Alexander Honeyman married to a daughter of the Hall family.
If you pm me I can invite you to view my family tree on Ancestry or Genes and I can then show you the connection I have and maybe that would help you with the rest of your family members. Also on Ancestry is a relative of yours also researching Copeland and Hall.
Marcie ::)

Hi Marcie

Not sure if hineahua has an Aberdeen connection with her line of Copelands. From a previous post on this line by hineahua

www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,485331.0.html

Roots for the family look to be Ireland and Ayrshire it would seem.

Hi Monica,
Just thought that with her mentioning Portobello that she would be searching near Leith, Edinburgh.  Aberdeen is just crows flight from there
and Moses and mary did move from Aberdeen area for New Zealand eventually
if you remember you found the information for me when I was searching for my 3x grgran Marjory Charles for whom I now have via  a relative a copy of her birth certificate.  Her name was actually Marjory McDonald Charles.  Have not found where McDonald comes into it yet.  Will have to have a sleuth.

Is there a Portobello in Ireland or one in Ayrshire?
If the info I have posted is of no use to her, nothings lost.  perhaps others will be able to help. And I include you in that, sleuth extraordinaire.

Hi
The Copeland family I am researching came from Down, Ireland to Ayr and John Copeland moved to Portobello and started his Bakery business.  It was my grandmother Margaret Sullivan Copeland that emigrated to New Zealand in 1923.
I am trying to find out more about about her brothers
William Shuttleton Copeland married to Christina Deholm Currie
James Copeland married Helen Lyon Baptie
George McCall Shuttleton Copeland married Catherine Mary McInnes
I have their Birth deaths and marriages.
Any help with their children and connection would be appreciated.

Hi Marcie
Yes from Edinburgh, Leith and I think Fife.
John Copeland & Isabella Walker came from Down Ireland to Ayr about
1853-56 to Ayrshire. John their son married Annie McCall Shuttleton
1882 St Quivox in Ayr and moved to Portobello sometime after that.
All their children were born in Edinburgh and Portobello.
Regards Hineahua :)

Hi ,
Then there could well be a connection to the Copland/Copeland family from Rayne etc.  Elaine Nixon (a member of ancestry), is in nz and is looking for people of that name. If either I invite you or you  join temporarily the pair of you can get together to see if there is a connection.  Except for Moses, the other names you mention seem to run through that family from around that period and perhaps are siblings or cousins to those I have connexions to. The same as in  your direct family.  I found a site where they have some old photos of Portobello, just by googling Portobello Edinburgh and I made a note of some bakeries.  High Street Portobello is a Greggs bakers I think 164. Wondered if you had the exact address, it may be nice to have a copy if its a match.

Right Jane,
the 1891 census  Gros 684/01 004/ 00 025 Duddingston & Portobello
146 High Street Portobello
Thomas Copeland Hd age is illegible  occ: Confectioner born Newton Ayr
Annie Copeland wife age 29 also born Newton Ayr
John Copeland son aged 7 Scholar born in Edinburgh
William Copeland son 5 Scholar born Edinburgh
James Copeland son aged 3 born in Portobello
there is also a mention of a jamie? Morrison son un cannot read age. Domestic servant
Have not checkedEdinburgh to find the exact date of their arrival in the area. They seem to have fallen between census.  but checking the birth of the two children born in Edinburgh would give you a more accurate date. Marjorie

254 High Street, Portobello, seems to be a restaurant these days.

Portobello has never been part of Leith, incidentally.

Hi hineahua,

I was brought up in Portobello for 20 years I lived just along the road at a place called Joppa, I remember my mum shopping in Copeland's on her way home regularly, she thought the product was second to none.

Portobello was a lovely little seaside town but it has changed a good bit not like when I lived there, the shops are a disgrace to what they were originally. The shop Copeland owned is the white one, in the days when the family owned it the shop front was just stone colour.

I have attached two photos, one where the shop was and the other where they lived, the house they lived in is on top of the shops to the left of the photo looking at it with the pink blinds.

It should be noted that Portobello is not in Leith or attached to it, Portobello joined Edinburgh in the 1800's and the town was started around 1747.

Cheers.

Archie.

Hi hineahua,

Copeland's shop is roughly where the car is on the right, on the left of the photo this has all be redeveloped with nice buildings, the photo was taken around 1930.

Regards.

Archie.

I have been busy on other things for a couple of years but nearly ready to return to Genealogical research. My interest in this family is the Shuttleton line which makes anyone later than Annie a relative, albeit distant. I have a considerable amount of research on that line which I am happy to share.

Hi Archie:
I was "home" on vacation a month ago and drove from my boyhood house down Portobello High Street, through Joppa and Musselburgh and on to North Berwick.  Portobello High Street is a bit run down all right (and a bit garish in places) but it still brought back many fond memories.

John Copeland & Isabella Walker came from Down Ireland to Ayr about
1853-56 to Ayrshire. John their son married Annie McCall Shuttleton
1882 St Quivox in Ayr and moved to Portobello sometime after that.

I helped a friend many years ago with a family tree & I'm pretty sure (after a bit more digging) there was a connection with this family (not direct line)?

Basics I have are:

Agnes (Nancy) Cop(e)land b c1906 was the daughter of;

COPLAND HARRY (Henry Wilson) & JACKSON SUSAN 1895
564/1 172 Greenock East

Susan died 1912 aged 35 yrs (COPLAND SUSAN 35 1912 644/9 617 Milton)

Harry/Henry remarried after Susan's death to the g/mother of my friend.

Henry Wilson Copland (Widower) married Mary Melrose Taylor (Widow) 29 Dec 1916 Camlachie, Glasgow
Parents John Copland & Isabella Walker.

COPLAND HENRY WILSON b 25 Feb 1872 578/ 148 Ayr
