Title: The next move..
Post by: 7blue1pink on Friday 05 November 10 17:53 GMT (UK)
Hi    Have recently aquired a wedding cert for my G Uncle and Aunt who wed in Gt Yarmouth 1929.  Walter Drake and Isabella Price. This now gives me an address of what looks like Temperance Hostel (could be Hotel but dont think so) south Howard Street Gt Yarmouth and  the grooms fathers name of James Drake general dealer.
Question is : How do we find people once the Census is out of play please?  Obviously I'd like to track the grooms birth and family line.  Many thanks :-*

Start with what you know and work back from it

How old was Walter on the marriage cert - use that info to find a birth on freebmd

Use the 1911 census if he was born before then to find him possibly with his parents

If he is with his parents in 1911 - use the info re: number of years married to find his parents marriage - and so forth and so on

Put this birth on the backburner whilst you investigate the 1911 census.

Will do, thank you both.  just one last question.  Ancestry dosent seem to have the 1911 census on display yet, so which is best route to it ? :-\

The 1911 is strictly pay per view so you either have to buy a 1911 subscription or credits.  It is only available via the following website or FindMyPast subscription

You may find the following helpful when searching the free index

USING THE FREE 1911 INDEX TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT HOUSEHOLD

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

Once you find a possible match - make a note of the county and district in which the person was living

Return to the index and in PERSONAL DETAILS - just put the surname of the family - nothing else

In LOCATION - Select the county and below it - type in the district

In OTHER MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD - show the full name of the person you have found on the index

Click SEARCH

You will have to buy credits to view the full entry - the above instructions will only help to possibly show others of the same name in the same household

Right.  This is what Ive got:

Living in a Caravan  8 Ringers meadow Mattishall . E Dereham: Horse dealer

Herbert James Drake  32   born Norwich
Delia Harris                 27   born Norwich
Herbert                       4     born Aldby  Norfolk
Ethel                           3     born Guist? Norfolk
Walter                        1     born Guist    Norfolk

Anyone got anything I can add to this from the other Census perhaps? Thanks .. ;)

Is Delia his wife?  If so - how many years are they shown as being married?  Is there a marriage for them on freebmd

How old was Walter on the marriage cert - does his age tie in with the 1911 entry?

I'm being cautious because there is a 1906 birth on freebmd in Aylsham - Walter Ernest and 2 others 1908 and 1909 in Norwich & Mitford

Walter Ernest died 1969 - Norwich
Walter 1908 died 1989 Norwich

Do you know Walter's date and place of death/burial?  From the latter 1960s dates and places of birth were noted on death certificates (or as good as known by the person who registered the death).  Also, gravestones and local newspaper obituaries can be useful.

Thanks for all that folks.  My Uncle Walter Died in Peterborough Cambs.  Not sure what year but I rememer him so possibly 60's/early 7o's.  Will look to find his death.  My cousin Grace thought she remembered his wife being Deirdre....I think Delia may be about right.  Plus I come from a gypsy background so Horse Dealer living in a caravan sounds right to.  Im doing this search more for Cousin Grace than myself as she dosent use a computer etc.

James was 32 when he wed and Delia 27.  James was b Herbert James, obviously prefering James and using it acc to wed cert.  1911 Census gives head as Herbert on one page but James on another.  And says they've been wed 5 years.   I found their wedding, giving Herbert James Drake and Delia Harris  Dec 1905

The Drakes I know had/have a very large family. And I did find a large drake family with familiar names as today while searching last night.(dont know where now lol)    Interested in who the Harris's were?  Hope that helps..

Thanks Carole.  That will be Uncle walter.

Im wondering if Delia Harris may have wed prior?  I cant find a birth for Delia Harris.  But on someone elses quest on here I noticed a    Golia/Delia   who mothers maiden name was something like Patience Harris.  pretty sure there was a traveling link too.  Bit of a coincidence?  I will go see if I can find which family it was.

Have you seen the 1905 marriage on freebmd between Herbert & Delia

The marriage cert will tell you her marital status and also her fathers name which will give you her birth surname.  She was only born 1883/84 so I doubt she was previously married

You absolutely right Carole.  id be best to order the cert and see whats on it to be safe.  Thanks once more.
Title: Harris/Lamb
Post by: 7blue1pink on Tuesday 16 November 10 12:32 GMT (UK)
Anyone know what became of Golia/Delia Lamb  b 1883/4 Aylesbury Norfolk, Daughter of Patience Osborn?

I am looking to find a Delia that married Herbert James Drake (James) in 1905 Norwich 4b 441.  She marries in the name of Harris, but Ive  Have a sneaky feeling Golia may be her.  My family are travelling: and the Harris's & Lambs are the same. I cant find a birth for a Delia Harris, only a wedding.  And cant find her on 1891/1901 census's in the name of Harris.  Any idea's please??  Tried to post this on the page mentioning her but couldn't find how to, so forgive me if this is in wrong place....always in a muddle, thats me! :-\

This post is quite old but I thought I would reply any way. Golia was born Golia Lamb, married and Delia Harris and was buried as Golia Drake!!
Her husband Herbert James(Jimmy) Drake used to procure horses for the artist Albert Munnings to use as models for his paintings.

Haven't posted before so hope this follows the rules. Also last posting was a few years ago so hope this isn't too late.
I went to Costessey primary school from 1948 to 1950 with Sammy (Mooshy) Drake,  the son of Walter (Bluey) Drake and Bella. They lived at Linalls Belt, West End, Old Costessey, in a house Bluey had built using standing trees for scaffold posts. They had about 12 acres of land, mostly woods and meadow, which had been part of Costessey Park, bordering the NE of Tower Hill. At the time my father owned Costessey Park Farm, now a golf course, where we lived. He sold Costessey Park in 1950 'ish, and bought Linalls Belt from Bluey Drake, and we lived there until the of 1954.
Hope this provides a little background.FBYVU

Wow! I'll say. That's a real interesting piece of history😁 thank you so much. These are things us younger ones would never know unless someone tells us. My aunt Rose, Bellas sister, used to live Costessey too.. And her lad Frank still lives there. Done well for himself and has a lovely place down by the Round Well Pub. He's in demolition I think. I remember Frank's dad Frank Carrara putting me high on a horse down there when I was a little dot. Scared me to death lol course many are gone now.. And I'm now the senior generation. I'll pass this on to my cousins.. They will be thrilled too. Many thanks once more.  ;D

Another memory from Costessey in the very early 1950's is of a very smart lady who used to drive through the village in a pony and trap. I knew of her as "old" Mrs Drake, and she lived at Poplar Farm, West End, Costessey. Possibly she was "Golia" referred to in the ancestor chart above, wife of Jimmy Drake, Bluey's father.
No doubt you've seen Joemasonspage entitled Old Costessey and Bacon, in which he tells an amusing anecdote about Bluey Drake.https://joemasonspage.wordpress.com/2011/12/30/old-costessey-2/ (https://joemasonspage.wordpress.com/2011/12/30/old-costessey-2/)

At the risk of boring you, here's a link you may like to look at http://www.geocities.ws/sandgroper79/munn2.html (http://www.geocities.ws/sandgroper79/munn2.html)

It was written by Tom Barley, now dead, about James (Jimmy) Drake and his friendship with Sir Alfred Munnings, the painter.

No more, I promise..

I am related to the Drakes. This outline is from my file. Hope it helps.

Hi Jackie,
Would be interested to know where this information came from if you are happy to share please?
Herbert Drake who married Beatrice Copland is my great grandfather, and as far as any family know he was never married before this…
His marriage cert (aged 26 in 1932) to Beatrice states that he is a bachelor. My nanny was very interested to know if he was a secret bigamist! 😂😂 so I looked into finding marriage cert for his apparent marriage to Catherine Rudling- one does exist, but is dated 1932 with Herbert aged 20 (my great granddad would have been 26!) and his father is named as George Henry Drake, my Herbert’s father was also Herbert Drake
So unless there is any other evidence of this being his second marriage I would suggest these are two different Herbert Drakes…??
