Title: Wiltshire St Marys - 1871 census
Post by: Carolyn57 on Thursday 28 April 05 05:55 BST (UK)
Hello

Would anyone be able to tell me where St Marys Wiltshire is? Is it near Devizes? I haven't been able to find anything on modern maps or in Genuki.

If the rest of a family was baptised at Rowde, would it be likely that someone who said in the 1871 census that he was born at Wiltshire St Marys, would it be likely he would be part of that family?

Any help much appreciated.

Regards

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,  If you give the name of your ancestor and the birth date some of us who have the earlier census's for that area maybe able to pick him up and help solve the puzzle. I myself have all my relatives being born in a very small area of Redlynch and Morgans Vale which both come under Downton but on my GGGgrandfathers birth cert.it says he was born in Lover and when we went to find Lover last year we ended up sat outside St.Marys Church having our coffee and sandwichs. It was the parish of St.Mary in the 1841 census and as far as i can tell had not even been named Lover then.  All our ancestors had been born in what seemed to be a long road of cottages with thatched roofs with this beautiful church half way along the road. If i can be of any help i will post you with what i find, if you would like to post the names and birthdates if the person you are searching for.

                                            best wishes cheryle.f

Hi

Many thanks for your reply. My possible ancestor's name is James Brinsdon born in 1823 in St Marys Wiltshire.  I am trying to establish whether he is the son of John Brinsdon (Born 1791 in Wiltshire) and Lucy Trotman (born 1788 in Rowde, Wiltshire).

John and Lucy married in 1812 in Rowde, Wiltshire and had the following known children (all christened in Rowde with the records showing their surname as Brinson)- George (1813), William (1815), Grace (1817), Elizabeth (1821), Jane (1825), Sarah (1828) and John (1830).

Lucy (Trotman) Brinsdon died in 1830 in Rowde and John married again, in 1831 to Susanna Hannah Rutty of Melksham, Wiltshire. They had the following children Sarah (1831), Thomas (born 1832 in Rowde), Elizabeth (1834), Mary Ann (born 1836 in Devizes, Wiltshire), Lucy (1840, Devizes), Edward Rutty Brinsdon (my 2x gt-grandfather) (Born 1843, Devizes died 1919 in Dunedin,  New Zealand), James Albert Brinsdon (1845, Devizes), and Esther (Hester) ( March 1847, Devizes).

My 3 x gt-grandfather John Brinsdon died in August 1846 in Devizes. His widow (my 3 x gt-grandmother) Susanna (Rutty) Brinsdon died in Devizes in January 1874.

If anyone could give me some guidance as to whether they think James Brinsdon (born 1823 in St Marys Wiltshire) fits into the family above, I would be most appreciative.

I'd also love to hear from anyone who has any of the above in their tree.

Regards

Hi,

James Brinsdon born in 1823 doesn't appear in the parish records for Devizes St Mary's.

There are no Brinsdon or Brinson names in the index for baptisms in this parish.

Title: RUTTY & HEDGES - Melksham
Post by: Dulverton on Monday 06 June 05 12:31 BST (UK)

I am linked to the RUTTY family of Melksham.
The parents of Elizabeth, my 2nd great grandmother (b1805-d1898), was a daughter of a John & Margaretta RUTTY (nee UNKNOWN). I believe that this John was born in Melksham around 1773,  unfortunately they did not appear to name any of their girls, Susannah!

Hi

I have a Mary Brinsden ( Blinsden ) in my tree . 1851 census shows her place of birth as Broad Somerford, Wilts. She was married to John Bishop & they had a son Charles in 1838 at Westport ( shown as Westport St Marys on Genuki ) , Malmesbury Wilts.

Not sure if this could link in any way with your family, im still trying to trace further details on her.

Nashua,

I am sorry, but I am unable throw any light on your side of the family!
But .... "my" William Hedges, a son of Charles Hedges & Elizabeth Rutty was recorded as being born in 1829 in Malmesbury!!!
William was the first child of the marriage, the other children were born in Melksham.
I will certainly follow this up, to see if a link exists.
Thanks again for contacting me.

Adrian

(What a lovely name by the way!)

Hi Adrian

Thanks for your reply. I will also keep a look out for your Hedges & Rutty families in my tree when I can make progress with Mary Brinsden.

Thanks also for your compliment about my name :) but its not my real one. Just one I use on screen.

I am also looking into the family history of the Brinsdon family.
So far have traced back to my direct 2xgreat grandfather Jesse Brinsdon b.1829 (1861 census) married to Caroline who were both born in Castle Combe, Wiltshire.

I am looking really to find out their parents and also if they had more than 2 children, other than George William and Sarah Jane.
Any information about above or Brinsdons from Castle Combe would be of great interest.

Carolyn(NZ)
I have located a James Brinsdon b.1823 in Bath who is listed in the 1881 census as living in Monmouth, Wales.

Thank

I am interested in the Rutty family of Melksham.

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/search.htm#searchform

Enter Rutty% as surname and then submit
Click on the "2 hits" link.

These are children of Elizabeth so I'm seeking contact with Dulverton/Adrian.

Hi Carolyn

Further to your original query, I found the James Brinsdon you mention from the 1871 census in the same place in the 1861 census, but with a different birthplace.

He's in as Brimsdon rather than Brinsdon, and indexed in Ancestry as Bremsdon, which doesn't help matters.

Unfortunately, I can't really make out the birthplace - it looks like Nelsam and has been struck thorough. If anyone can make a better stab at working it out, I'm happy to try and find him in the 1841 census, assuming he's still in Wiltshire at that point.

The reference for the 1861 entry is RG9/4007 Folio 95 Page 14 and it's in Trevithin, Monmouthshire.

Hi again Carolyn

The only other contender for James I can find in the censuses is a James Brinsden in 1891, also in Monmouthshire, bit he claims to be from Malmsbury and I don't think there's a St Mary's parish there. Funnily enough, this one doesn't seem to appear in any other censuses - different wife and family from the first one. Neither of them appear in 1881.

Nothing is easy about this game  ;D

I know this is an old thread but thought I would look at it, as it's a branch of my surname and I live in Wiltshire. The family you are looking for seem to be based at CastleCombe near Corsham in Wiltshire.  I found them on 1871 and 1881 census, still in Castle Combe. Incidentally, Ruttie is another spelling of the Rutty surname and can be traced back to the 1400s in Melksham.
Hope this is helpful,
Craig 😁

Maybe Westport St, Mary. a village that is no more, was incorporated into Malmesbury. So not on modern maps.
