Doubtful if there would be a stone Robert Reekie Thomson died 26 Apr 1947 in Leys Park Home/Hospital Dunfermline (wife Agnes Munro Gear died 1912 in East Wemyss) but I'd be grateful if you could check it out please.
Apparently he was put in a scalding bath and died a few days later, there was an enquiry I believe. I have in my notes "Death age 76 Cerebral Softening, 2nd degree Scalding, Surgical Shock at Leys Park Nursing Home "

Your offer of photographs from the various graveyards is a magnificent gesture and a great resource. Thanks.

Hello Norrie G,
Thank you so much for responding so promptly. Yes, the family on IGI is mine. Actually, by an eerie coincidence, Robert, my GGGrandfather, was also killed in a railway accident in 1852.
The 2 inscriptions in the cemetery are unknown to me but prompt me to do some research on them to see if they are connected.
I am most appreciative of your help on this.
All the best,
Cein
PS What does it mean to be buried in "Common Ground"?
-
Actually, by an eerie coincidence, Robert, my GGGrandfather, was also killed in a railway accident in 1852.
Hi Cein had some time to do a lookup in the local paper for that time
this is the report fromthe Newspaper
Fifeshire Journal 16th september.1852
Dunfermline News Fatal Railway Accident
On Monday night an accident occurred on the Elgin Railway, in
Consequence of which the fireman of the engine lost his life under
The following distressing circumstances: - between nine and ten o’clock
The unfortunate man, along with the engine driver was proceeding up
The line from Charleston with a train of empty wagons, and had proceeded
as far as far as Gallowridge – Hill, a place about three quarters of a mile
to the south of Dunfermline, when the foremost axle of the truck, used as a
tender ( and which is always before the engine when coming up the line,
there being no turntable for turning the engine), broke and the other end
coming in contact with the engine, caused such a shock as to precipitated
the poor man on to the rails, right before the engine, which came over his
legs, and rested its whole weight upon the breast of the deceased, the result
of which was that death was almost instantaneous. The engine-driver on
seeing what had happened, ran up to the town for help ( no nearer aid being
procurable ), on returning with sufficient force extricated the remains of the
unfortunate man from below the wheels of the engine. The deceased has left
a wife and a young family to lament his untimely fate.
Also William Hetherton
Fifeshire Journal 13th Aug 1841
Dunfermline News Railway Accident
A few days ago, a man of the name of Hetherton a labourer on
Lord Elgins railway, met with a sudden death.
The railway runs along a deep artifical cut, which has on each side
A high built wall of defence. The unfortunate man, it is thought, had
ether fallen asleep on the verge of the cut, and so tumbled over, or
fallen over the wall accidently into the railway, and the next train of
wagons passed over his body and crushed him instantly to death---
the wagon driver not having perceived him.
What does it mean to be buried in "Common Ground"?
If the family were poor and could not afford to purchase ground for burial,
there was an area set aside in the cemetery called common ground,
This would mean that members of the family who died at various times were not buried in the same grave.
Headstones were not allowed to be erected in this area.

Some excellent work you are doing here NorrieG. :)

Hi Norrie G,
I responded yesterday but i must have done something wrong because it is not showing here. However, as I said, I thank you for taking the time to locate these articles. They are wonderful to have but tragic. William died 2 weeks after his wife's death and I wonder if he may have been despondent over that when he fell onto the tracks.
Thanks also for explaining common ground burials.
All the best,

Hi Allison can't see any Thomas Morrison for Dunfermline
Who died in 1897 who was his Parents & his wife as you know
the death date you can find the rest on Scotlands people
NorrieG
-
Hi Norrieg
Yes I have death details, but nothing makes reference to where they may be buried, all I can tell is that some of them lived on Rolland street and Moodie street (not that helps in the slightest!)
Thomas Morrison married to Rachel Anderson she died 1897. Thomas' father also Thomas Morrison died 1879, he was married to Ann Gaylor and finally his grandfather, another Thomas (he was buried in Bradford) his wife was Ann Hodge who died I think 1814..
The eldest generation were poor by all accounts but they were also grandparents to Andrew Carnegie who I feel in later life once successful would have erected something.
Clutching at straws... again.
Thanks for checking
Alison
-
Hi Alison I am not sure how much useful info would. Be included but Andrew Carnegie family history and life story are held by the western pa historical society. It might be worth a try it is suppose to include his parents life in Scotland. If you pm me I can give you the address you never know what the cost of a letter and. Postage might find for you

Hi Norrie, I am pretty sure this was the Adam Rennie I was after I have his death certificate which was signed on 6th May 1908 by another son called William Rennie stating also that Adam was the widower of Ann Malcolm. I have information of William being born around 1887 and getting married to a Joan Seaman born 1885 with a possible marriage date of 1906? residing at 27 James Place Dunfermline and having two children, Ella Rennie born 1906 and death 31st May 1908, also Adam Rennie born May 1908 and death 8 June 1908 both buried in Dunfermline cemetery, Adam Rennie senior also had another son namely John Rennie who married Margaret Wylie in 1909. Thanks again for your time and research.

I am looking for headstones of the YOUNG family, in particular John Young who married Mather Wilson Sutherland. John died in 1928 and Mather in 1922. Their son William died 1947; John died 1893. There were other children too. Their daughter Alexina married Henry Reedie and she died in 1962. Do any of these names happen to be in the index?

Hello Norrie,
Thankyou for checking for my Johnstone family, I thought there would have at least have been one headstone. Could they still be buried in Dunfermline cemetery, just no headstones ??? Where could I find that info?
thankyou, regards, Oscmin

Hi NorrieG
Don't suppose you would have any info on older graves for Hunt/Anderson or Young around Dunfermline area these would be dating back to 1700 onwards???
Long shot I know but would be most appreciated
Many thanks

Thanks Norrie for that headstone. How wonderful! William Young married Annie Munro, don't have date of marriage. They had 3 children, John, William and Thomas born 1902, 1904 and 1906 respectively.
I also have Mather Wilson Young who married William Petrie. Mather died 1963 in Dunfermline. They had a daughter Mather Wilson Petrie who died in 1921. They also had a son, but I don't know the name.
Also some Sutherland family members: Thomas Sutherland married Isabella Fraser. I know Thomas died in Dunfermline but don't have a year.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Shirley

Hi NorrieG,
Many thanks for your help and the link - I think the Alexander Hunt mentioned in that list could def be my 5 x Gt Grandfather and was wondering if there is any possibility of finding out what is on the headstone if still legible. Also I would be grateful for any info on the Andersons. I am looking for a John Anderson b 25 Oct 1702 son of John Anderson and Helen Stevinson. Also there was also a William Anderson son to Thomas Anderson who were both Bakers in Dunfermline and also witnesses to to the birth of Alexander Hunt. I think these two Andersons were pos Helen Young's (Alex. Hunt's mother) Uncle and Cousin?
Kind regards and many thanks again
Maris

Hi Maris the listing you refer to is of persons who have purched the
lairs, and not that there is a headstone on that lair.
In approx 1972 Mitchell inscribed inscriptions of pre 1855 stones
in Abbey Cemetery Dunfermline, I don't have a copy but you could
ask some of the listers if they have a copy and could do a lookup,
you would require to give Names dates etc

Wondering if you might have burial/tombstone information regarding Robert Duncan, born November 23, 1859, Collessie, Fife, died November 24, 1941, Dunfermline, and/or his wife Jane Boucher (nee Honeyman) Duncan, born February 13, 1859, Monkston, Collessie, died December 23, 1923 in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. We know that Jane's remains were taken back to Scotland by her husband and interred there -- we believe at Dunfermline.
They had seven sons:
William (1882-1936; married Elizabeth Normand HERON - her dates unknown; both buried Dunfermline); one son Robert Boucher Honeyman DUNCAN born c1915; assume all Scotland.
Robert (1884-1963; married Helen Short McKAY - 1880-1981, both buried Dunfermline); two daughters - Jane, 1914-1985, never married; Dorothy, b1921, married Sidney STEWART; Scotland.
John (1888-1940; married Lizzie Ann REID - 1892-1957; both buried Canada); five daughters, Lizzie b Scotland 1914-2006, d Canada; Jeanie 1916-2003, Canada; Helen (Nell) 1919-2004, Canada; Evelyn Inga 1921-2011, Canada; Margaret (Peggy) 1925-2009, Canada.
James (1890-1973; married Amanina McAlpine McKAY [don't know if she is a sister of Helen Short McKay married to Robert] - 1887-1970; both buried in USA); three children, Jean b in Canada 1918-2005; twins Veronica b in Canada 1920-1968 and James b in Canada 1920-1988; all died and buried in USA.
Andrew (1893-1954; married Jean Craig McLEAN - c1886-date of death unknown; both buried Scotland, exact location unknown); two children, Clement b after 1921; daughter - name and dates unknown; assume Scotland.
David (1896-1970; married Elizabeth Helen CAMPBELL - c1898-1973; both buried Canada); no issue.
Alexander (1897-1962; married Jemima RHIND - c1889-date of death unknown; both buried Scotland, exact location unknown); no issue.
Any information you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply Norrie ..... we are "grasping at straws" trying to find additional information about our ancestors and their descendants. We realize that there may not be headstones but submitted our query on the off chance that there might be some, somewhere.
I am attaching some Family Group Sheets beginning with my great grandparents Robert DUNCAN and Jane Boucher HONEYMAN and Robert's DUNCAN parents. That might give you a bit more information on which to base your search. I do go back a few more generations but can only post two PDFs.
Again, any information that you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Living in Canada proves to be a challenge to doing research overseas.

Norrie, thank you so much for your quick reply with all the info you gave me. I've been searching for Margaret Crawford's (who is my 4th great grandmother) death for some time and couldn't seem to find it on scotlandspeople. Magdalene Reid who you mentioned and who married James Bruce is also one of my Reids but I didn't know when she died so that bit of info very helpful also. I didn't know about the Agnes Reid born 1820 to Andrew Reid and Isabella Lawrie, will have to look into her. Haven't come across a Peter Lawrie and Elizabeth Purvis but a couple of Magdalene Reid and James Bruce's children had Purvis as middle names so there is no doubt a connection there.
Andrew Reid and Isabella Lawrie were probably buried in another cemetery in Dunfermline but not familiar on those or how many there are in the town. They had another daughter Ann Ross Reid (married name Morris) who died about 1864 and a son John Ross Reid who died between 1844 and 1849 but he lived in Edinburgh and may have died and been buried there.
Other children of Robert Laurie and Margaret Crawford were: Magdalene Laurie, Robert Laurie born 1781, David Laurie, William and James Laurie.
Any info on any of them would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

Hi Norrie,
I have a picture of that one I took myself some years ago.
date of death was 1920 I believe.
I'm afraid my enquire was a general one regarding Guthries.
Jane Ainslie GUTHRIE was one of a whole raft of Guthrie's living in Lassodie and Kelty.
her father & mother
Charles GUTHRIE d 1922and wife Rachael YOUNG d 1941 are buried Beath
I photoed on the same day in 2007.
Charles GUTHRIE's father was William GUTHRIE d 1915 at 167 Waverley St, Lachore,
his wife Catherine GLASGOW died 1890, Old Rows, Lassoddie.
I do not know where they are buried.
Any help appreciated.
Yours Aye,

Hello, I am looking for my ancestors and they are very hard to find. They lived in Dunfermline Scotland when his wife died. My ancestor's last name is Murray but his first name is hard to read on the census. I read it as Rofs (or Ross?). His wife died between the years 1844 and 1851. I do not know her name and because of that, I cannot find any records of any kind since the husband appears on a census only once in 1851. (I believe they were from Ireland originally). One of the sons' name was William (my great grandfather) who came to Canada in the mid-1860's. I know this is grasping at straws but would you have a record for a woman who was married to a Murray who died in Dunfermline, Scotland between the years 1844 and 1851? If she was her husband's age, she would have been born around 1815 +/- a few years.
- Woman died between 1844 and 1851. Married name was Murray.
- She was born around 1815 +/- a few years
- Husband's last name was Murray. First name maybe Rofs or Ross but not sure.
- Had a son named William (Murray) who was born around 1840. There may be more children.
I know that this is all very vague but it's all I have. If you have any information about this family, please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much.

Thank you so much, Norrie. That will give me much more to work on. I appreciate your help.
-
Norrie, may I ask one more question? I noticed that both Mary Ann and Rachel (above) are widowed. One carries her maiden name (Murray) and the other carries her married name. But both of them named their children "Murray" as the children's surname. Was/is that common in Scotland to use the maiden name for the children's surname?
-
Hi Zoe remember I said this could be them in 1881 Census
the IGI gives the parents of the Children in the 1881 Census
With Mary Ann as
Father: James Murray, Mother: Margaret Murray
1. WILLIAM MURRAY - International Genealogical Index

2. PETER MURRAY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 20 MAY 1860 Arbroath, Angus, Scotland

5. FRANCIS JOHN MURRAY - International Genealogical Index

Norrie

Hi Norrie. I've tried looking for a death certificate for Mary Ann and also Rachel (at Scotlandspeople) but I can't seem to find anything so far. I'll try to see if James is related to my great-grandfather William. But my great-grandfather William Murray was brought up in Dunfermline. That, I am sure of. It's even on his tombstone. But on any census, he always claimed to have been born in Ireland but was brought up in Dunfermline, Scotland. The problem with finding his parents lie in the discrepancy of his birth year. On his tombstone, it says 1840 but on censuses when he was alive (in Montreal), he said he was born in 1844 like his (Canadian) wife. And if I go by the census in Dunfermline in 1851, they say he was 12, which would have made his birth year 1839 (if it's really him). But sometimes I wonder if he even knew his own birth year. I guess I have a lot of work ahead of me. Thank you so much for your help. I will see if I can find anything with the information that you found for me. Thank you so much.
-
Zoe
There is a death in 1901 in the Poorhouse at Kinghorn for a Rachel Davie, m.s. Murray, aged 54 therefore about correct age (6 in 1851 Census). Parents are given as Hugh Murray and Elizabeth Maxwell. Marriage in Dunfermline 1875 for John Davie and Rachel Murray (age 28). In this Rachel's parents are given as Hugh Murray, deceased and Rosa Murray m.s. Boyle, deceased. From previous experience I would give more credence to the names on Marriage Certificate than those from given by Poorhouse on Death Certificate. Boyle maybe more in keeping with Irish ancestry but this may not be the correct Rachel.

Hi Dod, thank you for that great information! I'll certainly look through both possibilities! My fingers are crossed. Thank you!

Hi Twinpea
Finding "Rosa" as a possible forename for Rachel's mother I had a look at the 1851 Census record you mention re "Ross". I agree that Entry looks like Ross with the old fashioned double s which resembles "fs". However "Ross", the head of family at 8 Bruce Street, is a 36 year old FEMALE so is likely to be Rose/Rosa. Also found that in Bruce Street in 1849 there is a death for an un-named 7 year old son of "Widow" Murray - nothing to tie this defiinitley to your family though.
Jusy got you PM so will respond to that shortly.

Oh my gosh, yes! I had never noticed that "Rofs" was a female. Thank you for pointing that out. And you could be right about the name being Rosa. I will definitely look into that.

Lots of possible members of my ancestors in Dunfermline cemetery.
1) Thomas SMEALLS (Smails/Smeaill...) and his wife Lilias Mackie (Mackay) post 1851 census (born about 1777/8)
2) Possibly other members of their families too - like their children James and Agnes (Reid) SMEALLS and John Smealls and Lilias Smeals (spinster)
3) Lilias' parents John MACKIE and Lilias Henderson - prob. before 1841
4) Also interested in Williamson surnames before 1840
Would be wonderful to find any burials for any of these.
Thank you so much.

Thank you so much.
That Thomas is ours - do you know when his wife, Lilias Mackay/Mackie died?
We think the James who married Agnes Reid is likely this Thomas' brother but we don't know the parents yet. The census says he was born in Edinburgh.
Looking forward to more :)

Dysart and Dunnikier are presumably where our Thomas Smeals and Lilias lived - although as 'head gamekeeper' I wonder whether it was at Dunnikier House that he worked.
"Mitchell MI's" - is this a place? I can't find it on 'google' What graveyard would this man be in?
I'm presuming that James and Agnes' children were buried in the Dunfermline (Lays Road) cemetery. Is that correct?
Thank you for all your help. It is invaluable to those of us that cannot get to Scotland.

Hi Janet Mitchell MI's"
The Mitchells were a couple who in the 70s went round cemeteries
listing inscriptions pre 1855 from stones
I'm presuming that James and Agnes' children were buried in the Dunfermline (Lays Road)
I don,t know where they are buried but could be there.

I would assume he worked for Dunnikier Estate which is to the north of
Kirkcaldy
I located this Headstone in Kirkcaldy Old Kirk Cemetery

Dear Norrie,
That is absolutely fantastic! Dates and confirmation where Thomas worked and that he was 'esteemed'. Plus, Lilias' death date.
Now looking for Lilias parents - John and Lilias Mackie - they were married in Dunfermline on 2 April 1774. So we're looking for death dates after 1780 I think but before 1841 - because can't find them on the census.
Also looking for a Margaret (Philps) WILLIAMSON (married to James, grocer) sometime from 1793-1840 (actually I think she died before 1820). We are still not sure if she is the first wife of James Williamson (Kirkaldy Grocer who died in K. 19 Mar 1832 and was at that time married to Euphemia Stuert).
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Norrie - Thank your for the photo of the headstone. Some years ago on a visit to Scotland I took photos of three headstones - 1. Colin & wife Jean & daughter Jeanie [my direct line] 2. Mary Smith. Robert and George, sons of George 3. Ann Gray, wife of George and Joseph Morrison. Unfortunately I lost them in a house fire and I was hoping that they would be in your inventory as I doubt I will be making another trip [getting old!!] The parents Robert and Helen are buried in the old part of the cemetery which is usually locked and there is no headstone. They were in the 1881 census on Golfdrum Street - they died in 1884 n and 1887. Also Ann, wife of George was at 54 Moodie Street with her three children. Colin \was in Glasgow [Govan]
Regarding the dates re William I believe William died 15 Nov 1927 which ties in with the age of 75 and his estimated 1852 birth date. Thomas-birth date of Oct 1884' Nelly listed as being born in 1891' George born May 1896 - Jane - have her birth date 1854 and her death date as you have indicated.
The photo of William's headstone is much apprecited.

Looking to see if there are any Williamson's buried in this cemetery.
Hoping at least for some children of an Alexander W. and Euphemia Izett buried between 1828-32 -Robert and Archibald
Thanks for any help.

Hello Norrie
Hope I've got the right place to write to you as I'm new to the site. I'm looking for some ancestors in Fife - Birrell Davidson born 26 5 1857 died 26 2 1939 in Methil and his wife Isabella Westwater died 24 2 1915 in Lochore. I think their grave might be in Lochgelly - I certainly haven't come across them in Ballingry as there are quite a few other ancestors there so I've been there quite a few times over the years. By the way, my Davidson ancestors date back to 1560 in Dunfermline but I doubt whether there'll be any trace there.
My mum would really love to see their grave - I live in France so it's not easy to find the time to go round cemeteries on my visits to Scotland.
I would be grateful for any help you can give.
Cordialement

Hello Norrie
Thanks very much for all the information – I certainly recognise some of the names & others I’ll check off on my family tree & with my Mum this weekend, just in case they’re related and get back to you. You have my great grandparents listed. I wonder where Birrell & Isabella have got to – I can’t believe they wouldn’t have had a stone. This will save me trailing my mum to Bowhill on a wild goose chase anyway. I’m very grateful
I have another question as I see you have details of lair numbers too. My aunt was buried in the 1940s in Ballingry. Her grave is unmarked and is now used as a path which is rather upsetting for remaining relatives but we don’t hold the title deeds (the original owner has died and isn’t buried with her).
We are wondering if we could get permission from the title owner to put up a stone and perhaps for one of the remaining relatives to eventually be buried with her as she’s on her own in double ground.
Not sure you’ll be able to do this but if you’re not, perhaps you could trace the lair number so that would give me some more information – I expect possibly Fife Council might be able to help? I don’t know if such information can be divulged.
Thanks again
Cordialement

Yes my headstone research is based on my photograaphed index

He had a family of 8 I know where this one is - although he died in the pit, it was only three months after he left the Black Watch in the 1st World War and his tombstone shows the insignia of the Black Watch - he's in Ballingry I have a photo of the stone. No-one else is indicated on the stone - his wife was Grace Sparling.
what were the childrens names? I know there was a Birrell who I think is buried in Valleyfiled with his wife, Agnes Jarvie. I've recently got in touch with some of his descendants and will try and get more info on the children's names .

408 Mary A McEWAN died 5.12.1949 age 54

his wife Archibald Sharp 9.5.1980

Hello Norie
On looking at my family tree , and at all the branches, it seems a bit difficult to pin anybody down as a lot of the first names are alike (even when there are 8 ore more in a family) and from much the same period (I only have circa for a lot of them), and I don't have spouse's names. There are one or two that might be interesting though - anybody called Birrell is almost certainly to be from my family. There are a few who don't even have the surname Davidson (ie Birrrell Sparling in Ballingry) but are still linked by the female line.
The only Alexander I can find has a birthdate of 8 8 1685.
However, I've found a bit more from Birrel and Isabella's family:
their son Joseph (born 31 7 1887 died 7 9 1963 in Kirkcaldy) was married to Helen Munro (died 1959). They had a daughter, Isabella Mentiplay Westwater Davidson who was born 18 1 1909 did 3 11 1986 in Kirkcaldy and was married to Edward Hennessy Wilson who was born 21 7 1906 and died 7 7 1972 also in Kirkcaldy. Where do they get these names ::)
isabella & Birrell's son Hen(d)ry also had a son called Birrell born 24 5 1902.
Mary Baillie Davidson born 26 10 1859 died 21 1 1929 married James Murray born 9 2 1856 died 5 9 1878.
There's a Thomas circa 1893 who was the son of James Davidson & Helen Sharp, a William circa 1878 and a John circa 1878. The James are too numerous to mention ::)
And there a lot of Goerge's too.
I know there are other Davidsons in Ballingry (my Grandad's siblings) which you didn't give me. Perhaps it's because they're less further back but if it's because you don't have them, I could send you the photos for your database. Let me know.
Thanks for your help.

Hello Norrie
Thanks so much for all the info -it's really quite fascinating.
The Helen you found seems to correspond to Helen Sharp (married to James Davidson who died in 1880). She was my ancestor's sister. & her husband and my Davidson ancestor were brothers The childrens' names and order of birth all tie in. Bit concerned about the dates though - according to the census her last child was born when she was 53 - and more worryingly , on my family tree, there's a John and a Thomas (after her husband' s death?) after William . Do you think they might be grandchildren that she brought up? The two Sharp "boarders" must be some sort of family members , the name is too much of a coincidence.
These two were the first Birrell's in the Davidson family (called after the two sisters' father Burrel) but there were quite a few others later. THelen's son Birrell went to Govan and worked as a shipwright where he died.
How do you want me to send the photos - I see it's possible to attach them here and I have them on cd so maybe that would be ok or via PM if you prefer?
Fascinating to have an address & have a few more details for this side of the family - I haven't been able to trace them any further forward - perhaps they left the area or perhaps they're some of those you listed in your first reply ....
Thanks again

Hello Norrie
I've been doing a bit more research from which it seems that Helen was only 36 at the time of the census (apparently it's really badly written) so it's quite feasible that she had a child of 3. When her husband died, she remarried so it's also possible that she had more children.
-
Norrie,
Would you possibly have any Tranns or Wests on your list?
James Trann (7 Jul 1820 - 26 Mar 1896) married to Christian West (11 Nov 1823 - 14 Nov 1864).
Two of their daughters seem to have died in Dunfermline, Ann d 13 Mar 1852 as an infant and Catherine d 1932 (married to James Beveridge). I also have two James's, one of which died as a baby in 1863.
James's father was James McFarlane Trann (1784 - ?) married to Elizabeth Hutton. There was another child, Elizabeth but I only know she was born in 1822.
There are even more Tranns that might also be about (Phillip, John, Catherine, Richard, Janet and Helen) but they are siblings not direct ancestors and may have gone back to Edinburgh at some time.
Christian West's father was David West d 1 Aug 1862 in the poorhouse and her mother was Anne Adie. She had 4 brothers John, James, Alexander and David.
Thank you so much in advance

who were John Rennie Parents?
Norrie
-
Almost certain John Rennie died 1958 his father was Adam Rennie (c1839-1908) mother Ann Rennie (m.s Malcolm)
Thanks.
-
Norrie,
I just have to say a BIG THANK YOU not just for me but my new found 2nd cousin (thanks to you).
I never knew she existed until you found the headstone of her GRANDFATHER my g.Uncle. -
She never knew the cause of his death or the reasons for it, as her Mother had married and moved away from her immediate family. We now communicate regularly although we are both way past retirement, we intend to meet up. (hopefully)
And most of all she now is settled in her mind, as to why her family left the close knit family behind them.

wife Margaret HUNTER died Dunfermline 1870 aged 63
Nothing on Headstone index
Robert WATT died Dunfermline 1877 aged 35
wife Elizabeth MUIR
no headstone on index can't find any of the children on 1881 census
who did Elizabeth Muir remarry after Roberts death?
there is a James born Dunfermline & a David Watt in an orphan hospital Edinburgh.
Norrie
-
Hi Norrie
Thanks for taking the time to look at this.
I think you've got the correct children there in Edinburgh.
Elizabeth MUIR died prior to Robert in 1877 and they did have sons James born 1870 & David born 1871.
Address on the death certificates of James WATT & Margaret WATT/HUNTER was Knabbie St, Dunfermline
Address on the death certificate of Robert WATT was South Inglis St, Dunfermline
Further information on the family can be found here:
http://mowatfamilyhistory.ca/2159.htm (not my site).
I think James & Margaret were in the 1861 census at Inverkeithing as Toll collectors (with children James & Catherine) and in the 1851 census at Burntisland.
In 1871 Robert & Elizabeth with sons James & David were at Reform St Dunfermline.
If not at Dunfermline I wonder if James & Margaret may have been buried at Inverkeithing? I would be interested if you have any ideas on where I could look next.
Many thanks

explain that your ancestors lived and died in Dunfermline

Hi Norrie
Brilliant, thanks for the lead and ruling out the Lays Road Cemetery for me.
Much appreciated.
Rebecca
-
Hi Rebecca not ruling Lays road I was only saying that I have no record
Of a headstone for your Watts there, If I was to take a chance on where they
Are buried it would be Lays road.
With all the deaths in such a short period could they really afford a stone.
Norrie
-
Hi Norrie
Thanks for the clarification.
Agree that finding a headstone was always going to be optimistic.
I'd not realized the significance of that Lair information on that site - certainly pays to have someone who knows what they are doing to take a look!
Many thanks
Rebecca

Hi Norrie,
I would be so grateful if you would look up my great grandparents for me. They are :-
William Gray & Jane Frances Gibson
Thank you so much,
Annie
-
William Gray & Jane Frances Gibson
Hi Annie can't see anything in my index
who were Williams parents ? did they die in the Dunfermline area
and approx. date.
Norrie
-
Thanks so much for looking Norrie, I thought this would be an easy one!
My mum remembers walking through the cemetery regularly with her father as a little girl in the 40's, although she was never told why (her parents were very tight lipped on everything)!
After doing our family tree, I discovered that William and Jane moved up from the Borders about 1898, and moved first to Aberdour (maybe they are buried there). Not that long after, they moved to Woodmill Street, Dunfermline, as my great grandfather became a gardener in the Glen.
We put 2 and 2 together and came to the conclusion that my great grandparents were buried in Leys Park, hence the frequent visits!
This is the info I have on them
William Gray born 1858 Roxburghshire died around 1939
Jane Frances Gibson born 1870 Northumberland died around 1915
As I said Norrie, I thought this would be a nice quick easy one for you. But at least if they're not there, it will save my poor auld mum, wandering round the cemetery with a bunch of flowers to put on their grave, as she was planning to when the weather eventually cheers up!
Thanks again,
Annie (Bodrum, Turkey)

Hi Annie I have only 2500 headstones Index in Dunfermline which is only
about half way through the cemetery.
the last stones in my index are first burials being around the late 1930,
but you would'nt know if there was a stone in 1915 or untill William died in 1939
you could contact Margaret Lyle at Dunfermline Crematorium and ask for
the location of the grave she would supply a reference number and there
is an large board at the main entrance which would show the area in the cemetery
for that reference number.
you would require an correct death date for William
Scotlands people gives
1938 GRAY WILLIAM M 80 DUNFERMLINE /FIFE 424/00 0236
1917 GIBSON JANE FRANCES GRAY F 46 DUNFERMLINE /FIFE 424/00 02
you can view for a small fee.
I would suggest that you contact , Cemeteries Department, Dunfermline Crematorium, Masterton Road, The current lair registers are administered by Fife CouncilDunfermline
you can contact Contact Margaret Lyle online
explain you are trying to locate them in Lays Rd. Cemetery in which your ancestors are buried
explain that your ancestors lived and died in Dunfermline

Your help is greatly appreciated, and I'll follow your advice.

Norrie in any of your cemeteries do you have
William Whitehead and his wife Hannah Weir?
Or David Drylie who died in Jan 1876 when he fell down a shaft at Townhill #8 his wife immigrated to the US so the only person who might be on the stone with him would be a 2yr. old son George who died in 1874.
Also looking for the daughter of the above William and Hannah-- Hannah Weir Whitehead and her husband Richard Drylie. I appreciate anything you might have. they all lived in Dunfermline but am not sure where they would have been buried
Hi Cath sorry nothing on any of the above

Joan is in my Family Tree. 6th Person

;DHi just found this thread. I was wondering if you could check your list and see if there is a David Trotter born about 1851 or a Thomas strachan born 1860 in this place . any information would be appreciated. Actually any trotters here between 1795 and 1900 would help in my research.
Thank you for the tremendous work you have done. Im in australia and getting to scotland is a pipedream at the moment.
thank you

My great grandfather John Burt married Christina Drylie Dec 31 1866. They had a daughter Janet on Oct 25 1867 and christened Nov 17 1867 But she died of bronchites on Feb 12 1868. Christina died from complications of bronchites on March 28 1869. I don't think there would be a tombstone. The only address is Dunfermline. Thank you for your help gmar

Hello,
I'm wondering if you could check to see if Margaret W Allan Marshall who died in Nov 1953 and her husband Robert Marshall who died in Jul 1969 are buried in this cemetery. I was told they are in lair 9661 in the Dunfermline Cemetery but not sure if that means the Leys Rd. Cemetery. Their son Robert purchased the lair in 1953 shortly before his mother's death. I would love to have a picture of their gravestone if one exists. Thank you in advance, Nan

Hello Norrie
I just wondered if you had any details on an Arthur Gray Chalmers died 20th October 168, and his brother David Chalmers 1973.
Sorry my information is so limit, both men were unmarried, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are buried with other family, but the only other possible grave location is William Chalmers and Catherine Reid but the headstone you found for them do not mention either of the above brothers.
I have the burial records for their other brothers John and Robert and they are not included in the plot.

I should have put John and Jessie, not Robert, lol, I know the headstone only gives John, as he was my grandfather, I was a bit shocked not to see Jessie on the headstone, but I don't think my dad was too fond of his mother.
I am also looking in to my other grandparents on the Galloway side, a fairly large family by all accounts, and so far mostly in Dunfermline, so if you have any Galloway's I would be very interested.

Hi Moo my index is based on the main names on the headstone that would have been the parents
Who were they ?
Norrie
-
Hi Norrie,
I know his parents were David Chalmers and Marion Campbell but he is not buried with them, James appears to have been the first Chalmers who died in Dunfermline from the family, everyone else died 30 - 40 years later. The only other surname possible is Wilson or Hoggan, but I think it would be unlikely, and mostly likely in the old grounds.
Thank you for looking Norrie, it's very much appreciated.

Hi Norrie
Can you find any trace of a John and Janet Gillies nee Thomson?
The last address I can find is in the 1871 census at 158 Campbell Street, John 65 and Janet 61.
I think John may have died in Dunfermline in 1884 aged 88 and Janet in 1884 aged 76.
Many thanks

hello rindercella
Sorry this is late to the thread.
I am a REID from NZ and my 4th GG'mother is also Margaret Crawford.
I can help you with the Australia / NZ decedents of Margaret Crawford's grandson John Ross Reid if you are interested. I am interested in tracing the Dunfermline Reid line back and also discovering if any Reids from that line are still in Dunfermline. At the moment I am stuck on John Reid b 4 May 1749. Some sites give his father as William Reid b 22 August 1723 but I am not confident.
