Title: Hay Family from Cummingston
Post by: Amberglass on Sunday 12 June 11 02:51 BST (UK)
:)My grandmother was Jane McPherson Hay although she went by the name Jean. She was born in 1891 in either Nairn or Cummingston. Her parents were James Hay born 1863 and Jane McPherson Hay born 1864. I believe that Jane McPherson Hay's parents were William and Isabella from Hopeman. My grandmother had an uncle George Steven born 1853, a brother Robert, born in 1888 that died Sept 4th 1918 in WW1,{ I believe that my great uncles name is on a WW1 war monument in Cummingston},  she had sisters Isabella born 1889, Elizabeth born approx 1890 and Willimina born approx. 1900. My grandmother had a niece Jessie that moved to Canada as well. I believe they lived in a long cobblestone house that still stands in Cummingston. {thank you google street view} as I have many pictures of my grandmother and her family at that house.

My grandmother had many aunts and uncles in the area as well as other siblings that I am trying to confirm.... although I have been told that 4 died at birth. I have been searching for so long. I cant believe that they all just up and moved away. My grandmother travelled back to the area on a few occasions, I have many pictures to document family there.

Any help with information would be very much appreciated.  :) I have been searching a long time and Im getting discouraged.
Thank You, Amberglass :)

Pam, Thank you!

I knew that my GGF was a quarry master. The other things I didn't know though.  I do have census reports, but none that have shown me what you just did. I found passenger lists when my grandmother came over on the Caledonia etc but not too much info on family back home in Scotland.

I expected with a family that large, that there would be a lot of information out there.  :-\
I have a lot of pictures to share if I ever track down family members in that area.

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate the information you gave me.

Hi Pam,

My great Uncle "George Stephen", was a Hay born in 1851. He died in 1914.He was a brother to James {my grandmother's father} and son to George and Christine Hay. I have found quite a bit of information as well as photographs on him. He married Margaret McGillivray in 1880 and moved to New South Wales Australia. There is a wealth of information on that family line. A lot of family working on it right now, new information almost daily!

I am in need of information on a few of George and James's siblings. Girls, named May:1855 and Johann:1857 and a boy named Christopher :1865 ....and any others that I haven't found yet.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

It's from a book called "The Morayshire Roll of Honour a biographical record of the men and women who took part in the great war 1914-1918".

I have a copy that belonged to my grandfather and when I saw your original post I thought I would look it up to see if your Robert was there.

I also had a look for him on http://www.cwgc.org/ and he's there too but maybe you've seen that.

Regards
Jen

Well Jen,

Thank you very much. I would never have leaned those bits of information had it not been for you.  :) You have given me more to go on.

Now, if I could find a picture of him, Id be a reall happy camper. I have a picture of the Royal Fusiliers but I have no idea which one he is. :D There is a man in the picture that is the spitting image of one of my brothers and of my father....I am thinking that it may be him. LOL

Thanks again!

Amberglass:

I believe we may be related. Your mention of the ship Caledonia triggered it.  My GGF William Hay MacKenzie also came over on the Caledonia to Montreal, then to Ontario.  His father, Thomas MacKenzie married Elizabeth Cameron Merrilees.  Thomas's parents were Alexander McKenzie and Margaret Hay.  Margaret Hay was born about 1816 in Hopeman, Duffus, Morayshire.  She died in Aberlemno, Angus, Scotland 12 November 1887 and is buried in the Aberlemno Churchyard - apparently it is either in Forarshire or Angus as the boundaries moved some over time.  Her parents were William Hay and Agnes Mason.  William was a mason in Duffus, Morayshire in several Census. (1851 and 1861 I believe - if these are the same people).

I am trying to find out anything about the ancestors of Margaret Hay but apparently the records of Duffus Morayshire are not available through SP or FamilySearch.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Scott

From http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp:

NM259568
GEORGE HAY
c. 1829 to pre 1884

Occupation : MASON
Date of Birth : c. 1829
Spouse's Name : KATHERINE FARQUHAR
Date of Marriage : 03 OCT 1856
Place of Marriage : DUFFUS CHURCH OF SCOTLANS
Date of Death : pre 1884

Could these be the parents of George Hay that you seek?  Not sure how they fit - I did a search on "Mason" as occupation in Moray.

Hi,
I have just seen your thread re Hay family from Cummingston. My great grandfather was George Stephen Hay from Elgin, Scotland. He immigrated to Australia and had a successful career in the Post Office, married and had a few children, one of which was my grandmother. I have photos of him and his wife.
If you are interested, please let me know

Sincerely,
Stephen Cutler

Hi Stephen! It's very nice to meet you! Our great grandfathers were brothers! My great grandfather was James and he was 7 years younger than your George. My GGrandfather stayed on in Scotland. I have added some of your family into my tree already. Are you on ancestry? I have a few very old photos of James, his wife and children. I also have photos that were my grandmothers, taken back in Scotland but I have no idea who the folks in them are. Feel free to email me at Scrapbookingcathy@gmail.com. I am in Toronto Ontario.

FYI, I am currently updating www.livesofthefirstworldwar.org and as part of that, have been updating Robert Hay which may be of interest to you all. I have included his profile link. You may have to register to see it. It is part of the Imperial war Museum in the UK and willnot cost you anything, in fact you can also update the site with information and photos.  Thanks  Vince Stuart, Hopeman, Morayshire, Scotland. Hi

Looking to contact any family member of James and Jane Hay from cummingston Moray. My Mum was Born in 1910, to Isabella Hay daughter of James and Jane Hay and I think she emigrated to Canada after my mum was born, Her name was Mary Geddie Hay, and was brought up by the Geddie Family in Grantown on Spey. Would love to hear from anyone

I have the Geddie family that Mary Geddie Hay was brought up by and was about to add her, suspecting that Colin (Murdoch) Geddie is Mary's actual father. Do you have any records that might conform this or prove it was someone else?

Have a look at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Murdoch-840 (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Murdoch-840) and see what you think,

Best regards,
Moira
