Title: Re: George Puddiford born 1786
Post by: JOJOJOJO on Saturday 25 June 11 20:11 BST (UK)
Hi, Im also helping my brother to track down our family too and being as helpful as a bull in a china shop.

Im trying to find out more about George Puddiford residing at Monkham, Woodford St Mary in the 1841 census. It says that George was also born in Essex, but how do I track down his parentage? The websites ive been looking at won't let be go pre-1800, so how do you go further back? Any help much appreciated. I can't read the marriage certificate to establish his parents name....

Hi Jo   I take it they were born 1770 not 1870, also they lived in a dwelling called Monkford in Woodford in the parish of St Marys,if that is so then you will need to look at Parish records at Essex records at Chelmsford, you can us either there web site to see what micro fiche you will need when you visit, they are putting on line the early fiche but have only got up to 1720 for St marys.

Best Regards

Hi Jo
I will do the look up for you, I will not be at the records for at least a week,of course if you live somewhere near Chelmsford do go along as the records are very easy to use and it is what family history is all about.

Best Regards

That's so very kind of you - i'm finding family tree research very addictive!

I also would find getting to Chelmsford abit of a trek as I have two small children and live in Kingston.

Thank you very much for your kind offer of help.

Hi Jo
Well I got to the records sooner than I thought, the bad news is that your family seems to have no connection with Woodford before around 1816 ,I had a look for George's baptism around 1770 and worked my way up I could find no Puddifords until 1816.
Baptisms St Marys Woodford
Jan 22 1816 Caroline  private baptism daug of George and Ann Puddiford  labourer
July 5th 1818 Diana daug of George and Ann Puddiford labourer
April 16th 1821 George Edward son of George and Ann Puddyford  labourer

I have a couple of thoughts on your family ,you are researching a unusual name which is a great help but take note of the different spelling it will help you with the census,as George was a labourer he in the time frame would have worked on the land as this whole area was rural in early 19th cent so he will not have moved far from where he was born I suspect just where is at this time is a puzzle, also I feel we are dealing with the end of George and Ann's children bearing years so they will have had others elsewhere,in the 1841 census George Edward is the only child still with them aged 18 ? I believe George senior died 1846 using freebmd did you find George junior in the 1851 census ? this may help with the family also look at all the Puddifords in 1841 census they must all be relatives so see where they are just maybe one branch is still at the place they were all born.

Best Regards

Hi all it is a pain when you get duplicate posts the main reason is that there may have been apiece of info that would have helped the look up as in this case that they have the marriage in 1806 not sure if at Woodford who knows ,what we have are two people who are new to family history and both have used rootschat ina effort to find there way back, thats what rootschat is about, there problem is they have a family  who though they are in the 1841 census at Woodford there is no history of them at Woodford,if George and Ann got married there in 1806 great I did not check the marriages because they wanted a baptism for George around 1770,never mind at least they have a little more info on there family.

Best Regards

Hi, many thanks for your information, its really helpful of you. I think the Puddiford name is the root of some of the problems as it seems to change its spelling later on to Puddyford.  I did find George junior in the 1851 census.

My brother and I are working on the tree together, but  hadn't checked that i'm already on the hunt for George and Ann. We are both too excited Im afraid and i apologise if we have wasted anyone's time it's not intentional.

Thank you again  :)
