Title: Bridge family Tottington Lancashire
Post by: McGregorGirl on Monday 04 July 11 05:55 BST (UK)
Hi, i'm doing my family history and have been stuck on the Bridge family in Lancashire. My ancestor Joseph Bridge was born in 1776 at "Withins" Harkshaw lane? His father John Bridge was born at the same place in 1742. John's father, another John, was also born at the same place in 1715. Does anyone know any more about this family? Or their home? I'd like to keep tracing it back but its hard to follow the records this early in history. Thanks!

You can seewhat the property looks like as it would appear it is on Google maps .....

Go into Google maps, type in the address bar "Withins" Harkshaw lane, tottington.

You will then see an A on the left hand side that shows Withins farm and you will then notice it on the map. Switch to satellite view and you can then view the farm.

Presumably this was their property?

Wow Matty, if she is from the same property then she must be related. Perhaps Grace's father Richard was the brother of John Bridge (born 1742)? Or even possibly a son of John. Do you have an account on ancestry? I'd be happy to share what I have. If your information turns up i'd love to see it! My ancestor Joseph Bridge seems to have been a bit of a scoundrel. I have a lot on him, he was sent to Australia as a convict for a long list of crimes (mostly relating to robbery or possessing stolen goods). He's a very interesting character. I hoped to find out more about his family in England.

G'day Barry (and others),
I'm also descended from Joseph Bridge and currently researching my family history. Like the McGregorGirl, my information goes back to John Bridge (1715-1746) and I would be very interested and grateful to receive any information etc on ancestors dating further back in time.

Regards
Chris

G'day AussieGirl2

The attached document may give you a good start. It starts with Joseph's grandfather, but I can't guarantee its accuracy or completeness as it was compiled from the Internet.

Cheers
Chris

PS Hope the attachment comes through

I am also an ancestor of Joseph Bridge via the Scholes family.  Joseph's parents were John Bridge and Ann Scholes (Ann is my great aunt x 5) her parents were James Scholes and Ann Greenhaugh, and her grandparents were Peter Scholes and Isabell Hampson. I know that Joseph had a brother James who was not as fortunate as Joseph in that he was hung for passing forged notes.  His sister was called Alice and she married Samuel Pilling.  I don't have any information on John Bridge or his ancestors but would love to find out more if anyone can help.  Thanks!

Hi Aussiegirl2,

I, like you, are a direct descendant of Joseph Bridge. I've been researching the Bridge Family in Australia for a number of years. There is a lot of information available by the Joseph Bridge Family History Society and a number of books have been published by the Bridge family. I would be happy to share and exchange information with you.

Regards,
Wollombi

I think it would be worthwhile for all you Bridges to make contact with the Lancashire Family History Society's branch in Bury and also with the society's secretary who will inform the officer who deals with members' interests. It would be useful if at least one of you joined the society.  See its website.

I am puzzled by an earlier posting which said that after a certain number of postings, it would be possible to send private messages (PMs). I thought it was possible immediately on joining. Am I missing summat?

The posts on this thread are quite old.....but in case anyone is following -

My husband is a descendant of a Thomas Bridge (possibly the brother of John 1715-1746).

Thomas was born c. 1711/12 at Withins Farm, Hawkshaw and died there in 1787.  He was married to Nancy (Ann) Fildes in 1733 at St. Mary's in Bury.  They had 3 sons (that I know of) Thomas 1739, James 1746  and John 1749.

Hi KathyM, hope this reaches you. I'm unfamiliar with this forum so not sure I'm replying correctly.
I have information suggesting Thomas is John's brother but without knowing the names of their parents it's hard to verify, although considering they both lived at Withins Farm they must be related. However, I do have a family tree mapped out for Thomas which lists 7 children and expands to his great-great-great-grandchildren. If you'd like any info let me know.

Hello to the Bridge Family
I am a descendant of Joseph Bridge 1776 - 1829   He was transported to Australia in 1806 for life for forgery. Yes he was very naughty as he was further convicted for receiving stolen goods and was sent to Morton Bay Prison where he died at 52
He had 7 sons who were very respectable gentlemen. He met his wife Elizabeth Buffey  on the vessel Fortune on their way to Australia.  She lived to 90 years
In total from the 7 children there were   71 grand children,   468 great grand children
I am his great great great grand daughter     I live in Sydney Australia.   Most of his descendants are in Sydney or the Hunter Valley.    I know nothing of his siblings or parents. I've hit a brick wall and would love to hear from anyone who has more information   Thanks   Lynne OSullivan

I would not say most of his descendants are in Sydney or the Hunter Valley, we are spread far throughout Australia.
I have Joseph’s family tree to his great-grandparents now with reasonable certainty if you’d like to message me. I contacted a family historian in Lancashire who had researched the Bridge family.

Hi there, I’m also a descendant of Joseph Bridge and living in Sydney. Just wondering what your findings were from contacting the Lancashire family historian?

This is the parish record for the death of John Bridge in 1802 at Holcombe chapel in the parish of Bury, Lancashire, England. He was the father of Joseph Bridge who was transported to Australia in 1806.
