Try this site - has loads of info on Cheyne families and you might just find yours. Did a search just on the surname and there are nearly 700 entries!

Hi
Thanks for replying and with the http the website opens. Had a quick look and very impressed with it. Thank you once again.
I do however have a query on the 1881 census James Cheynes occupation is a Tailor, but on some of the certificates that I have it is a school teacher. I am certain it is the right family, it is really confusing me.

I don't have census access at the moment but maybe Carole who found them earlier could tell you his profession on those census? Have you tried Freecen? It's not totally comprehensive but you might find him there. He may just have changed his job as he got older but teacher to tailor does sound a bit odd!

1851 - Teacher
1861 Registrar Of Births Teacher Of English Arithmetic
1871 - Schoolmaster
1881 - suspect occ has been mis-transcribed from the original - you would have to view the image on Scotlands People to confirm

Hi Lindsey86
Have you tried this cheyne family site? I find it easiest to search if I use a spousal surname that isn't Cheyne. In your case it looks like it would be Saddler or Sadler.

And yes, if you take a look at my avatar, she's a Cheyne - from Peterhead area, Aberdeenshire. Her father was John Cheyne (stone dyker) & mother, Helen Ironside. I will go through the verified part of my tree in the next few hours to see if I can find any links to your family.
In the meantime, good luck!

James Cheyne was born inShetland, 12 Mar, 1891.
He married Mary Saddler in Peterhead. Looks like he was back in Shetland by 1861.
